Will antianxiety meds take away a temper?

Will antianxiety meds take away a temper? I'm starting to realize that I need to be on antianxeity meds. I have never been on one (only antidepressants) and have been putting it off due to fear of side-effects and guinea pig system until we find one that works.

However, I'm beyond stressed lately even wondering if I have post partum anxiety issues. I love my son to death but when the stress becomes unbareable, one more thing puts me over the edge and my temper goes to a zero to 60 in 3 seconds and I blow up (slamming door, yelling at the animals to get out of the way because they're always at my feet, etc. but never, never do I touch him). I do everything possible not to yell at my son or have him see my blow ups because I grew up this way and I never want my son to feel the way I felt as a kid. Yet yesterday I failed miserably. High stress of the day and high traffic on top of his non stop wailing/screaming/shrililng in a car seat for a 40 min drive led me to just lose it, scream, hit the steering wheel, cry and of course, that made things worse for him. The entire ride I just wailed and cried and my husband had to calm me down via phone. I just can't take it anymore.

And yes, I am in therapy about this and the 9 billion stressors in my life. It just feels like with parenthood, I'm at a breaking point. All I fantasize about is being alone somewhere with no one to bother me and to sleep and not have one person/animal ask me to do something. My husband tries to get it. He doesn't and at times, adds to it. Plus he has his own anxiety/sleep/high stress due to work issues and is on Cymbalta. So we're already quite a pair. :(

I think I want to know what do antianxiety meds feel like? I don't want to be a zombie or neutral since I'm tired to the point of dillirium all of the time (made an appt. for thyroid/diabetes check since I'm concerned). I also am afraid of the weight gain and any other side effects.

I was "good" on Wellbutrin for a year then that stopped working but again, I'm not depressed, suicidal, or anything linked to post partum psychosis. I'm just fed up with stress, feel like I'm ready for a nervous breakdown, while at the same time feeling like I'm going to jump out of my skin 24/7. Even my teeth feel like they're buzzing I'm that wound up all. of. the. time.

Any insights to what they're like would be helpful. I know each case is unique but still, a general knowlege would be helpful and if it takes the 0 to 60 temper away.

According to tradition, which side of the bed should a man sleep on?

In heterosexual relationships, is there a side of the bed that men normally sleep on? Is there any kind of tradition behind it? Like, if you're standing at the foot of the bed looking at the pillows, are men supposed to sleep on the left or right side? My dad always slept on the left side. And myself, with my last girlfriend, I also slept on the left side. Am I unconsciously re-enacting some kind of old tradition as to what side I'm supposed to sleep on? I know that there's some kind of tradition regarding walking beside a woman on the sidewalk. Men were supposed to stand between the woman and the street so that if any mud was splashed up by a passing carriage, the man would bear the brunt of the mud.

One other thing - I've noticed that in both my father's and my case, we would sleep on the side closest to the door, which just happened to be the left side. Does anyone know if any studies about this have been made? I'm not saying that these ancient customs should be upheld, nor that they should continue. I'm just curious if historically, there's a custom of some sort. Thanks.

On the plus side, the view I get with a cracked mirror is pretty funky.

What's the best way to fix my driver's side mirror? Due to an unfortunate combination of my early morning stupor and the parking space from hell, my drivers' side mirror is smashed. The actual assembly is completely fine - most of the glass is still attached, even, it's just all cracked.

My first thought was to just replace the glass myself. However, I've already tried to purchase replacement glass for my car (a 2006 Honda Civic) from two places. In both cases, the order went through okay, and then I received a message a couple days later saying that the piece was out of stock.

So here I am, a week after the fact, and I still have this broken mirror to deal with. Does anyone know of a reliable place where I can get replacement glass? Or, do you think it would be better to find a mechanic/body shop/Honda dealer to replace it for me? (Keep in mind, I don't need the whole assembly replaced, just the glass itself.)

Bonus: If I get the new replacement glass myself, what would be the best way to get all the old glass off without doing myself an injury?

Recreating the perfect pineapple salsa

How do I duplicate at home this absolutely perfect pineapple salsa I just found? After being spoiled with my favorite recipe of all time at a local burrito place, the shack closed down and the perfect pineapple salsa went with it. This was four years ago. I've spent that time searching for something as close to that recipe as I could find, and just about a week ago I found an almost-perfect analog that is served at a regional "build-your-own-burrito" chain.

This chain seems more stable than the hole-in-the-wall the original perfect salsa came from, but nonetheless I want to try to recreate this perfection in my own home in case they do close down or I have to move, or just to save money. Now that I have a sample, I realize I'm going to have to do a lot of trial and error, but are there any techniques to this sort of thing that make it easier? What are the most typical ingredients to pineapple salsa that I should try first?

How do you find freelance work?

How do you find freelance work? Right now I'm working with a few colleagues from a previous company to start up a new one, it looks like it might take off in a few months, hopefully sooner, but right now the revenue coming into the new venture is minimal, as is the amount of work I'm needing to put into the new venture until it gets revved up. I'd really like to land a few freelance projects in the interim so that I'm not eating ramen for the foreseeable future.

From time to time, I've always had side gigs, but they've always pretty much just fallen into my lap. Those have consisted of anything from just redoing a small office network for someone, or cabling a couple floors of an office building, to things like setting up a multi-server colocated farm. I'm not really picky on the type of contact, as long as it pays reasonably and it's something I have the skillset for, I'm there. The problem is I've never actually been in the position of looking for one of these, so I don't really know how to go looking successfully.

Note, I'm in Canada, and a systems/network guy with 15 years of professional experience.

What neat ideas could I print on the back of business card for a Technology Consulting company? My customers are small to medium businesses that have little or no onsite tech support.

I started a new business and it's thriving through word of mouth. Hooray. I have the front of my business card all set, but need some ideas for something that will be useful on the back that potential customers might use regardless if they purchase my services. I like my cards to be functional.

Some examples:

* Subnet mask chart
* TCP/IP stack chart
* CAT wiring diagram
* Some sort of password encrypted chart so customers can write passwords down

Is side parking with horizontal move is possible?

Do you know any car which has the capability of horizontal move to achieve side parking when both of car length and parking area length are almost equal (i mean there is no space to parking maneuver)? Do you believe a car with this skill can improve your parking opportunities? And most importantly, is such a car suitable for mass production and feasible?I will be glad if you can share your detailed ideas with some source -if possible- for my mini research project. I am actually interested in the technical aspect of the matter.

Need help answering a question about a "Flight of the Conchords" cast member! I am trying to answer this question a friend posed to me and I cannot for the life of me find the answer:

Q: What secondary cast member for Flight of the Conchords has a side project? He is male and also has a web series (I don't know if the web series is the project or if it is something else he does).

In this project he is quoted as saying:

"I'm in love with a girl. She's a philosopher. That's my luck. I'm in love with a philosopher. But she doesn't even know I exist. The worse thing is. She can prove it."
Now I searched the quote on google and got nothing useful.
Too much poop!

New Puppy Filter: What is the deal with tapeworms? Our new puppy, an australian shepherd (8 weeks old), had a tapeworm. We took him to the vet, and he was given the necessary injections to fix the problem. However, this puppy is seriously pooping about every 45 minutes, and is peeing more often than that. Is this a side effect of the meds? Anyone have experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Safe, Cheap Parking on the Southside of Chicago

I've got friends from Bloomington, Indiana driving up to Chicago to visit for a few days. They were going to take the Amtrak out of Indianapolis, but the schedule is extremely inconvenient. I'm thinking they should drive up and try and park near a Metra or CTA station on the south side of Chicago, and take public transportation into the city. Any suggestions on what would be the best station to pick?

I'm interested in finding cheap/free parking in a safe neighborhood. Ideally it would be convenient to access for someone driving North on I65. Any suggestions?

I was thinking Midway would be a good option, but it looks like daily parking is at around $14.

If it matters, the ultimate destination will be the South Loop, near the Harrison Red Line stop.

Is the fact that I really like eating the banchan more than the meal at my local Korean restaurant looked at as odd? I hate to admit this, but I think I almost love banchan more than many of the dishes I eat at the Korean place. The ladies at the restaurant seem to think this is weird. I am wondering if they think of it the same way I would if someone came into my (imaginary) restaurant and really, really liked eating horseradish and relish.

I know that banchan is often translated to "side dishes", but I have had some Korean acquaintances in the past tell me that it is more in between condiment and side dish. Just wondering what those Mefites in know had to say.

Is it illegal to drive without a passenger side mirror? I have a 2-door 2001 Honda Civic with a missing passenger side mirror. I will be driving across the country to the NY/NJ area soon, and I'm worried that I may be pulled over because of this damage.
What's going wrong on my right side?

YANMD-filter, with a bit of gross-internal-issues-filter: I've had a weird pain in my side for years. Any ideas? I've had a weird pain in my side for at least five or six years. I've asked a couple doctors about it and none of them have any idea - most guesses run somewhere in the irritable bowel syndrome category.

The pain is always in the exact same place: on my right side, just below where my waist curves in most. The amount of pain I have seems to correspond with how recently I've eaten - worse before eating, better after. It's not really a dull ache, more of how a sore feels when you turn the wrong way or something, like that sudden OUCH and then it's gone.

Once in a great, great while, the pain is so bad that it makes me catch my breath, stop what I'm doing, etc.

...actually, writing this all out makes it sound much worse than I realized.

Any guesses as to what this could be? Or any suggestions as to what kind of specialist I should call to get this better figured out?

Thanks a ton, Hive Mind. :)

Side Pain

Constant pain on left side, sometimes on right side: what's wrong? Three weeks ago my husband felt ill. He had a fever and developed pain in his left flank. His urine was clear (at least from a dip-stick test, it has not been sent to a lab). Our GP diagnosed an adrenal gland infection and prescribed antibiotics.
The fever went away soon, but the pain got worse and he went for blood tests. There were a few elevetad values (d-dimer and CRP) and the doctor was thinking about pneumonia but said to wait if it got worse. The pain got a lot better, but did not go away completely. He went back a few days later and the blood was fine. The lung doctor did not see anything wrong with the lungs.

This was a week and a half ago. The pain is manageable, but it is still there all the time. It gets worse when he takes a deep breath, then he feels a stitching (I hope that that is the right word) pain. Sometimes (a few times a day), unrelated to his breathing, he feels the same stitching pain at his right side as well. The pain is not sensitive to touch or pressure.

He normally is a very healthy man. He is 33 years old and a runner. He was training for a marathon (he is not running now) and never had any injuries. He eats healthy and does not smoke or drink.

The GP says it is probably myositis, which she explained as "muscle ache" and that he should take painkillers (she prescribed Diclofenac).

He will go back again if the pain does not go away, but we wonder if any of you may have any clues to other causes of this pain or other tests that he might want to discuss with the doctor.

Tax MetaFilter

I'm planning to do some on-the-side freelance photography in the next year. I'd like some advice on how to play the tax game most effectively. I have an 8-5 weekday job that pays my bills, but I'll probably be doing a small-potatoes amount of photography as a side business over the next year. Nothing to warrant obtaining a business license, incorporating, or anything like that; probably about 6-12 or so events/jobs at a modest rate. My expected earnings will almost certainly be higher than the $600 minimum for reporting additional income, but not anything in the several-thousand range. After doing a bit of research, here's my game plan:

1. Keep detailed receipts and records of ALL income and potential business-related expenses
2. Use 1040 (long) as normal for personal filing of W2s
3. Also file as "sole proprietor" using form Schedule C-EZ for business income based on receipts

Seems simple enough, right? Well, I'm wondering about deductions: I know with the Schedule C-EZ I'm allowed to file up to $5,000 worth of business expenses. I'm NOT planning on filing a home office expense, etc. But what about photo gear, computer equipment, software, or web hosting/printer subscription costs? Should I deduct these?

The obvious answer to me would be "yes", but I'm wondering that since I won't be making a tremendous amount of profit, it might be wiser to ignore some of those deductions to keep "under the radar". I mean, I'd love to get a new MacBook for my photo editing and write it off as a business deduction [which it legitimately would be], but if that offsets the majority of my profit, would the IRS consider me as being a "hobby" and screw me in the long run?

I know that the IRS looks for net profitability in 3 out of 5 years after filing as a sole proprietor. I don't plan on making this a primary source of income - be it next year or in five. Just a little side earnings. So would it be smarter to take the hit on my tax return and skip deducting too many expenses or to deduct away and keep my fingers crossed?

Would it be safe if I just made sure my net profits above were above $600 after all deductions?

Oh, and you can skip the "you should see a CPA" comments, I know you all ANACPA or ANAL, but I'm just "querying the hive mind" :)

OUCH Why do these pain meds hurt my stomach 31 hours later??

Ouch! Why does this medication hurt my stomach a day after I've taken it for the last time? Please explain before I have an ulcer or an alien growing inside me or something... So, I was perscribed 500 mg pills of Naproxen. The second time I took it, I got a horrible stomachache that woke me up in the middle of the night. I thought it was unrelated to the Naproxen because I had already taken it once with no ill effect. So, I took it a third time (brilliant, I know). That was yesterday (January 17 at 7:30 a.m.), about 18 hours ago. I am still experiencing really awful stomach pains, alternating with intense hunger pangs, which makes no sense since I have been eating. By the way-- every time I have taken it, I have done so with food.

The question: is this related to the Naproxen? If so, why is it still bothering me 31 hours later. Anyone else experience this?

Pain on the left side when breathing in

Breathing-in feels like your lung is snagging on a rib.. .. when I was younger, I used to get this situation, where if you filled your lung to about 80% capacity (or more) there would be pain, on the left side, like it was like the lung was stabbed on the ribs or similar. Generally on the left side, around the area of the first to third rib (counting from the bottom). Would not last very long (minutes, for me), and was more an irritation that anything else. If you breathe shallow there is no pain.

This has since then stopped happening for me, sometime around my late 20s, but my brother still gets it, and sometimes seems quite bad (enough to take painkillers). I have my gallbladder pulled out around then, but I assume that isn't related.

I know my brother had an Ultrasound scan, but it came up empty. Anyone else have any ideas of what kind of checks he could do?

Is it legal (and/or ethical) to run a side business in a similar area as your employer company? I work at a big cell phone manufacturer, as a software engineer responsible for technical support and consultancy for developers using our platform.

However, I have some personal projects, mainly related to web and mobile software, that I would like to turn into a part-time business.

It is similar to the same area where I work at the big company, but I would be doing in my side business is what big company's customers do with my support.

Is it legal and/or ethical? Please let me hear your thoughts.

Fender/hood mounted side mirrors

What is benefit of old style fender/hood mounted side mirrors on vehicles? and why are they gone? There are some cars in 60s and 70s that have fender/hood mounted side mirrors.... What are major benefits? I can see that a driver will have a greater viewing angles and minimum head and eye turning radius...

Why are they gone? Many of asian cars seems to have them even in 80s.....

Was there major aero deficiency? or some bad side safety reasons?? What reasons do you assume that they are bad ideas for cars now days?

Thanks for any comments...

Little Chemo in Slumberland

Anyone with Hodgkin's Disease out there? Have a question about the wonders and side effects of ABVD chemotherapy. So here's the deal. I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's (stage 4b, so far) a couple of weeks ago and my first chemo treatment is on this Wednesday (first of 12). I'm getting the ABVD treatment and was wondering if any of you have had this particular cocktail and if so, what were those first couple of treatments like?

I'm getting a port put in just before the first treatment, so that's supposed to help with some of the really bad things that can happen, but that still doesn't deal with nausea, hair falling out, etc. I talked to a soon-to-be relative last night about his chemo experiences, but he has different cancer, and thus different chemo. He did mention some bizarre side effects like food cravings. Anything weird I should be watching out for like that?

I've tried googling, but I get distracted by other Hodgkin's stuff and wind up scaring the fuck out of myself. My blog and various written journals keep me mildly sane, or at least let me freak out in public. SheisMighty and I have made a vow to not read anything else about Hodgkin's until after my first treatment, but I think AskMe is a loophole :)

And please, only ABVD or Hodgkin's chemo stories only. If you have/had a different cancert, you might have gone through a chemo run much worse than I'm about to (like my soon-to-be-cousin) and I really don't need to freak out more right now.
