Calling in sick due to insomnia

Is it unethical to call in sick due to insomnia? I have occasional insomnia as the side effect of medications I have to take. I work at a desk job so it is not like I'm operating machinery or dealing with patients lives but I find it hard to stay awake and perform when I've had a rough night. I get paid sick leave with no medical certificate required- is it wrong if I use it after a night of insomnia?

Using NYC sick leave when your work is short projects?

I work project based/time sheets for a big company in NYC and I'm getting sick leave built up. But how do I use it if the chances of becoming sick on a short term project are very very small? [more inside]

I'm leaving and not coming back-- how do I do this?

I'm on FMLA leave for a health condition, and I am using accrued paid sick leave to pay my customary paycheck. I got a new job starting two days before my leave ends, and I can't come back. My health condition will not prevent me from working at the new job. I'd like to give as much notice as possible, but I want to protect myself from any recovery of benefits or major consequences. How can I feel like less of a schmuck by working while on sick leave?

I am taking sick leave while my kid has had some appendix issues. (He was in the ER yesterday and we have surgical consults coming up tomorrow.) I have time this afternoon to catch up with work but am feeling vaguely annoyed at being put-upon by a certain department. Office drama and snowflakes inside. [more inside]

Can my husband take FMLA to clean up the house, because I can't?

I'm currently not working, due to what might be fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue (and it might not, some doctors disagree, but that's aside from the issue at hand). My husband has stepped up and taken over all house and yard work, but the mess has been building up for years as my health has been deteriorating. I'm wondering if my husband can use FMLA to take some time off to help get caught up with the house and yard work? [more inside]

This is not the time to be randomly guessing

How should I structure my gradual return to full-time work after two months off for a psychiatric illness? Have you actually done this, and if so, do you have tips? Have you even known or heard of someone who did a part-time transition after disability leave? All advice sought in creating my return-to-work plan. [more inside]

Am I being a wuss?

I've been coming to terms with possibly having a chronic auto-inflammatory and/or auto-immune disease. I've taken time off from work as I was pretty badly debilitated and I've been in and out of doctors appointments and physiotherapy fairly constantly. YANMD, YANAD, but you might be a patient or someone dealing with a similar situation. My question. How did you know it was the right time to get back to work and how did you assess your stamina and mental energy? Did it result in a wholesale rethinking of your professional life? [more inside]

Can my company deduct annual leave instead of sick leave?

My company has the following leave policy: If you take a week's vacation and then, the following week are ill without returning to work (Mon & Tue say), the extra days will be deducted from your vacation / holiday balance rather than your sick leave. Is this legal? (This is for both UK and USA offices so responses from either side of the Atlantic invited.) [more inside]
