Talking about this with others I discovered that I'm not the only one who throws up, and then hours later, the first real meal you want to eat (after nibbling on saltines or something), is something spicy, greasy or fatty. Is there some science-based explanation for this phenomenon? [more inside]
Last year I called in sick nine days. So far this year, I'm up to five counting today, which is roughly on track if you consider that I get sick less during the summer. Where does that put me among people who work office jobs with no particular hazards? I feel like this is more than most people, and more than I myself used to miss class back in college, and I'm wondering why. More details and some hypotheses inside. [more inside]
I need a way to track food eaten/physical symptoms/weight/ in some sort of printable format that also works with android phones. Every app I find focuses on weight loss or precise measurements of food or doesn't include symptoms. The chart should be a simple graph. Does this exist?
Help me stay as healthy as I can as my life gets even crazier! [more inside]
Whenever I get the slightest bit sick, I always feel it first in my throat. Having an itchy throat where it hurts to swallow is no fun, and this extended winter we've been having has been no help! I treat it with plenty of water, honey lemon ginger tea, and cough drops, of course, but I'm wondering whether there's anything I can do preemptively to keep my throat from being less vulnerable. If you used to have a tender, wimpy throat that now weathers stress and rapid changes in temperature like a champ, I'd love to hear what you changed (be it food, vitamins, habits, or something else entirely)!
Whenever I have a particularly stressful or taxing day, I end up being profoundly exhausted for 2-3 days after. We're talking sleeping for 16 hours each day, walking around in a daze, feeling sick after eating, and just feeling unable to do anything I want or need to do. It's like I'm dealing with trauma, but surely this isn't a normal or even reasonable response to trauma, right? If you've dealt with this in the past or are dealing with it now, could you please share any solutions you've found that have worked for you? This has been going on since 2008 for me.
I have had an accident at work through no fault of my own. You are not my lawyer - but I'd like some UK people tell me where to go and how to approach this situation. [more inside]
When I start to feel a cold coming on, the last thing I want to do is spend time and energy trying to figure out the best treatment approach. I am seeking a guide that will help me identify and self-treat common/mild illnesses (both attacking the root cause and alleviating symptoms) as well as indicate when it would be wise to see a doctor. I would prefer a printout rather than an interactive tool like WebMD.
Today is my boyfriend's birthday and I had plans to make a lovely, elaborate, and special meal but he is recovering from a stomach bug. Let's say there is no longer any serious diarrhea, but he is taking it easy for now. But now I am at a loss to figure out something special, vegetarian and gentle to prepare for tonight. So, please share your lovely vegetarian recipes that are good for a weak stomach.
I come from an abusive family where illness was often used an an excuse to mistreat people. For example, my mother would emotionally abuse my father and I and then say it was because she was sick and that we had to learn to deal with it. My SO just moved from another city to be with me and two months in his mother is asking him to move back home for her hip replacement surgery "until she can drive." I am finding this very stressful. I have an earache for the first time since I was, what, 6? It sucks. Help. [more inside]
There are several people I've been chatting to online for various periods of time, who I'm likely to meet on my next journey around the USA. In the case of a few, they are asking to meet up. Nothing romantic and more than friendship with any, though the level of friendship differs; in some cases it's quite strong or complex. Problem is, the prospect of finally meeting IRL repeatedly terrifies me to the point of making me feel ill. Is this kind of feeling normal or common, or not? How can I subdue it and not make myself hide, literally? [more inside]
Every time I commit to leaving my current job, something goes nuclear, and it falls on me. I'm sick of it. What is the best way to handle a current boss planning drastic future plans around you, while you've just interviewed for your dream job? Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
I'm anemic and have PCOS, and have been feeling increasingly crappy. I have been taking over the counter iron that includes zinc, vitamin c, and B vitamins (FabIron) for over a year; clearly, it is not enough. I have a doctor's appointment first thing tomorrow morning. What else should I ask my doctor, or ask her to do? [more inside]
What are some ways that I can provide support from afar for friends dealing with illness? [more inside]
My doctor asked me to try the South Beach Diet to help my pre-diabetes. I'm about to take an antibiotic that makes most people queasy or worse, and I'm wondering what to eat if I start feeling bad. Normally, such as when I get the flu, I stick to the BRAT diet of bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. I can't eat any of those now without protein with them and only the whole grain versions of rice and toast. And when I'm nauseated things with flavor or fat like meat, stir fry, and salad are really unappealing. So South beach followers or diabetics/pre-diabetics -- what do you eat when you're feeling sick?
I asked a question about my cat a few weeks ago - he was fine then, but then got sick very soon after. We have both been through the wringer, and I'm having a very hard time assessing how his recovery is going because I've just been so sad and upset and can't tell if I'm over- or under-reacting to every move of his. (I'll try to keep the details short inside.) [more inside]
I have been having major stomach issues that I need to solve. Really uncomfortable bloating and belching minutes after eating, nausea, cramps, etc. I'm getting checked out by a doctor, but I suspect it is my old friend IBS coming back after a 6+ year absence. I NEED to get this under control and back to rights ASAP but so far nothing is working. HELP! [more inside]
Feeling ill yesterday and today, with a fever, slight cough, stuffed nose, sore joints. Taking dayquil and nyquil, and keeping track of my temperature every few hours. What temperature means "go to the hospital?" What other symptoms re: the cough and nose might man go to the hospital? [more inside]

Should I keep pouring different meds into my poor body to fight this beast of a chest cold? [more inside]
YANMD, and I understand that the internet cannot diagnose a medical issue. However, I am wondering if anyone has experienced the same symptoms in regards to a stomach bug, whether viral or bacteria. I am just trying to get some perspective on what my body is doing, and whether or not this seems in-line with something that will likely clear on its own. I'm not in severe pain, but will definitely see a doctor if things take a turn for the worse. I've had SEVERAL unhelpful, or frankly harmful, doctor visits in the past year, so I am (justifiably so) wanting to wade this out for a bit longer. [more inside]
I woke up with a stuffy, sneezey nose this morning. I fly across the country in four days to a conference I can't afford to miss. Is there anything I can do now to minimize the likelihood of making everyone else sick on my plane and at my conference? [more inside]
Help! I'm starting my new job tomorrow and I think I'm getting sick. YANMD. [more inside]
I leave for a much much much needed vacation tomorrow that I've been looking forward to for the past two months. As more and more people around me (family, friends, coworkers) have been getting sick during this nasty flu season, I have been super paranoid about getting the flu myself just in time to spoil my vacation. I started feeling really achy and fatigued last night, but maybe it has more to do with other things? [more inside]

I'm sick Metafilter. I'm in a bad way and I want your advice. I have a nasty case of the flu. I visited my doctor yesterday morning, and she diagnosed me with the flu, though the nasal swab test she gave me was negative for Flu A and Flu B. At the time I thought I was getting better, but now I think I've taken a turn for the worse. I'm contemplating going to the emergency room, and I'd like your advice on how I should decide whether or not to go, when to go, if I should bring someone with me, and anything else I should ask or do. I know you're not my doctor. I'm going to visit my doctor's sick call hours first thing in the morning if I don't go to the ER. That's in about 11 hours. [more inside]

How can I stop getting sick? I teach High School and am constantly run down. I eat healthy, go to bed ridiculously early to get up early, exercise, and wash hands as often as possible (and have wipes in classroom) but it is pretty much impossible to stay healthy in a non-healthy atmosphere. I have a cold/flu thing. What can I do to speed my recovery as much as possible? [more inside]
I have been overweight all my life, as has all of my family. I have noticed that as we age, get sick, and eventually die, between the sick and die part they get skinny! So each time I lose weight and look at myself I look like a cancer patient waiting to die and I gain it back. I've talked to a counselor who did a lot of hmmm and mmms which was too expensive to repeat. Any ideas how to fix my psyche and eventually fix my physique?

We adopted two 6 month old kitten brothers from the Humane Society three weeks ago. In that time, we've treated them for colds and diarrhea (worms), which involved pills, powders and liquid given to them via syringe. Now we're treating them for some sort of skin problem that the vet had noticed symptoms of when we first took them in two weeks ago. [more inside]
