I've just bought a second-hand Shuttle XPC computer with an Nvidia sound card. One fault is bugging me: no sound through the analogue audio outs or headphone sockets on the front or back, even when the operating system volumes are set to maximum. However, I have been told that the previous owner used the optical audio out. Is it possible that he could have disabled the analogue sound somehow? If so how might I re-enable it?

I live in Chilliwack in BC and find myself wanting to go to the Vancouver airport pretty frequently. I'm really interested in a shuttle service ala SuperShuttle that will take me to the airport and then home but have so far only found AirportLinkShuttle which hasn't worked out for me yet (I was the only rider last time I wanted to use them which means they charge double). Is there some solution for getting to the airport that doesn't include renting a car, or buying a second one? I'm open to car-pooling, public or private transportation - any help?

I am trying to buy a barebones machine for everyday use with a side of gaming. Small case plus huge graphics card cooler/fan don't mix well. Also, Australia seems expensive. Think you can help? I have been looking at the G2 motherboards with an Asus Nvidia 8600 graphics card, but it is a double-wide card (with a humongous cooler) and doesn't fit! It's also rather dear.

The neighbourhood shop has a passively-cooled Nvidia 8500-based card for Au $160 , but I don't know how well that will hold with the likes of Episode 2 and Bioshock. Where is the reasonable price/performance PCI-E gaming cards that take up only one slot of width? Will mine be ok (not too noisy, not too hot) considering it will be right against the case wall?

Some of you may have a suggestion along the lines of a Shuttle barebones competitor. I am picking barebones because they are small and (reasonably) silent, but if there is another option I will happily consider it.

Also I am new to Australia, rather shocked with the prices (everything seems to be 15% over euro prices), and confused about the online merchants. Which is the online retailer of choice for computing parts? Also, is there a generally-considered-cheapest bricks-and-mortar one? I live in Melbourne, for what it's worth.

I realise there is a lot of "building a gaming PC" talk in AskMeFi, but I haven't seen these questions addressed in the latest 10 posts about the subject.

My flight arrives at 6:40 and I need to get to the Hyatt in Schamburg by 8:15-ish. Prefer train but don't know if it's possible. I'd like to keep the trip as inexpensive as possible and know that I can take a cab for $24.

I prefer to take a train if possible but don't know what series of trains I would take or if the schedule would work given my timeline.

Arlington Station to the Hyatt is $10 by taxi.

4.5 hours between Gatwick arrival and Heathrow departure. U.S. citizen, experienced traveler, only a carryon bag -- but first time transferring Gatwick to Heathrow. Help me plan as precisely as I can to maximize my chances of making this work. On Friday, the 10th of August: Arriving LGW at 09:10, on USAir. Departing LHR at 13:40, on JAT (Yugoslav Air) to Belgrade.

• Definitely can't afford a private car.

• Bringing one bag (and nothing else) that meets all current carryon standards for Heathrow and for JAT.

• Have never had any problem immediately clearing customs, and my passport has more than a year left before expiration. Have never needed any secondary inspection at security.

• JAT "suggests" check-in two hours ahead -- and closes gates 30 minutes ahead -- of departure time.

• National Express coach is reported to take 80 minutes from the South Terminal of LGW (where USAir is) to LHR, *not* counting any traffic delays. From what I can tell, some traffic delays are almost inevitable on a weekday morning.

I'm looking to confirm that National Express is my best option (am I missing any better possibilities?), and looking for any suggestions re. how to make beelines straight from Customs to National Express to the JAT terminal at LHR.

And: Should I reserve a National Express ticket in advance? (If I do and then my Gatwick arrival is late, causing me to miss the NE departure I reserved, do I lose that reservation and that money, or is my reservation moved ahead to the next available coach?)

Riding the short-bus

How can I rent a shuttle bus? So, I have six children (boys/girls from 4-16), and I'm thinking it's high time we went on a road-trip style vacation. We haven't really been anywhere as a family since oh..forever. But I'd like to drive from Seattle to Disneyland, take two weeks and just meander. The problem being is right now we're a two car family, we both own station wagons, and to take a road-trip, we'd have to take both cars.

What would be sweet is if I could rent a shuttle bus (the short buses hotels and casinos use) for the two weeks. I'd be willing to pay $75-100 a day. We're not planning on camping, mainly hotels, but this would be easy on and off for everyone, and I think it would be memorable. Plus my older girls (14 and 16) could each take a friend.

I've googled, but everything I can find is geared toward chartering a bus. I just want to rent it, I'll drive it. I have good driving record. Can anyone help?

Looking for information on starting a shuttle service for backpacking/biking trails. I'm submitting a grant to start a shuttle service that would ferry backpackers, hikers and mountain bikers between trail heads and optional local lodging. I envision this to be initially operated for two months in both the fall and the spring.

I'm looking for two types of input: 1) actual experiences using trail shuttles (good, bad, best practices); 2) actual experience operating shuttles of any kind (equipment, employee, insurance, liability, logistical issues). Thanks!

Top tips and advice for building a Shuttle barebones system?

Over the weekend, I shall be building a Shuttle SK21G Barebone PC system. Given that I've only built about 4 computers (all of which worked fine) and never a Shuttle, is there anything you can tell me or websites I should read which will make the building process go smoothly? I've bought the following items:

- Shuttle SK21G Barebone PC system.
- AMD Sempron 2800+
- 1GB DDR 400MHz/PC3200 RAM
- Seagate ST3160812A 160GB Hard Drive

and will use other items (keyboard, mouse, monitor, CD-ROM, floppy etc.etc.) from an already working, but ageing, computer (a P2-400 in case you are wondering).

Given that I've never built a Shuttle before, I'm wondering if there are any hints, tricks and/or tips that people can give me (or point me to sites containing them) that will make the build process far easier.

To be fair, I'm reasonably technically au-fait (as in, I'm not a complete dunce) and don't believe that it'll be too hard to do (given that the motherboard is already screwed in and I've built a couple of PC's before) - but anything additional would be appreciated - especially if it is stuff that you wished you'd known before you started.

What's the least expensive and most efficient way to get from Providence airport to downtown Boston when you don't have access to a car? I've been Googling for the last hour and I'm not finding anything encouraging. Basically I need a way to get someone who's arriving into PVD at 8:00 on a Friday night into Boston in the least expensive and least scary way possible. The fares on the Peter Pan bus are great, but I have no idea where their "Providence Terminal" is in relation to the airport, and if it's safe or if it's just a crack house on wheels. Any suggestions -- that don't involve a $150 each-way hiring of a private van -- would be much appreciated.

Why does the Space Shuttle appear as a bright, reflective object — almost star-like — when seen from Earth against a darkened sky? It's not exactly covered in mirrors.

Space Shuttle Filter: external tank - why is the insulating foam on the outside?? Why is the insulating foam on the outside of the tank? Wouldn't it be safer to have the foam sandwiched between 2 aluminum skins?
The tank is only moving through the air at mach 4+, so keeping it from peeling off is a big deal.

I've asked this of everyone I know, and the only response is: " I think NASA engineers would have thought of that"

Macmini alternatives. I was considering purchasing a Mac Mini to make it a relatively inexpensive home media center, but after upgrading the hard drive to 80GB, adding Bluetooth for a wireless keyboard & mouse, buying the wireless keyboard & mouse, adding 802.11g for home networking, etc the $499 price tag was closer to $850 or more. Can anyone recommend a Windows box manufacturer who makes small form factor PCs for this kind of application?
