Is a shower curtain out of the question for a modern master bath?

Is a shower curtain out of the question for a modern master bath? I live in a suburb of a major metropolitan area on the East Coast. I have a master bath in bad need of re-tiling. So we are re-tiling the shower, jacuzzi tub surround, water closet and the entire bathroom floor (half of it is carpet). That's the easy part.

Our shower is just a one-person shower--not too big. There's barely enough room to prop your leg up to shave it. And, although it's in a corner, it's got some funny dimensions that mean that a glass shower door is probably going to run $1500-$2000.

The shower shares a wall, if you will, with one side of the jacuzzi tub. The wall is about 24" high. What if I had the wall completed to 65"-72" or so (the height of a shower door) with glass block, and then used a shower curtain to enclose the shower? Are shower curtains "allowed" in master baths? I haven't ever seen one like this except in an urban home where there wasn't a tub, or where there was a clawfoot stand-alone tub, or where they had converted an old closet into a shower stall.

I have a limited budget. Getting rid of the jacuzzi tub is out of the question. I HATE cleaning the shower enclosure glass. It's really gross and I can never get it sparkling clean. With a shower curtain, you just throw it in the wash, and it's clean. You can change the look of your bathroom quickly by putting up another curtain.

My neighborhood isn't fancy by any means. We were built in the early 1990s. Most of these bathrooms probably have the traditional shower glass enclosure. My glass block idea would be out of the norm for the area for sure. But would potential buyers, 10 years down the line, be turned off from the idea of a shower curtain in a master bath?

Me vs. my wife: Shower curtain battle!

Home decor filter: Help me settle a disagreement with my wife regarding fabric shower curtains. OK, this is entirely silly, but my wife and I have been wrestling with a shower curtain issue. We have a fabric curtain, with a fabric shower curtain liner. I am adamant that the liner should be placed with the finished side facing into the shower. She insists that the finished side should face out, just as the outer curtain does.

She thinks the liner works better facing out, that it is designed in such a way that it sheds water better if the finished side faces the same way as the outer curtain. I feel it looks better facing in (who wants to look at the tag, and the back end of the hems?), and more importantly that which way is out makes no difference in how the curtain performs.

In my mind it's like putting a flat sheet printed-side up - when you fold the blanket back, you're facing the ugly side, not the finished side, which we both agree is wrong. For some reason she won't agree that the shower curtain liner should operate on the same principle.

It started out as a friendly battle of wills, but this morning I noticed she had changed the curtain, so I switched it back. Then I thought about what I had done and realized that this is in danger of becoming a passive-aggressive (yet friendly) obsession with changing the shower curtain to match our personal beliefs. Thus, I turn to you, The Internets, for your help.

So: Finished side facing the tub, or finished side facing the back of the outer curtain? Who is right?

Help me fend off the shower curtain liner!

My shower curtain liner chases me while I am taking a shower. It has a few little magnets that are supposed to keep it attached to the tub, but they're not enough. What can I do? I got a new showerhead and have a lot more water pressure now. Since then I notice that when I get in the shower, the curtain liner blows up away from the tub's edge as if it's attacking me . I'm prone to claustrophobia so this is not good!

Even though the liner has a few tiny magnets at the bottom, they no longer keep it attached. Is there any simple trick I can use to keep the curtain liner in place that won't damage the tub or cost me much money?

How do hotels keep their shower curtains mildew-free?

How do hotels keep their shower curtains mildew-free? Is it part of the daily cleaning regimen? Do they replace them often? Do they buy better ones?

I ask because I have an awful time with mildew on my shower curtain, and I assumed it was mainly because I don't have a bathroom window for light and ventilation. But hotel rooms don't either, and yet the hotels seem to have the problem solved (presumably because a mildewed shower curtain would be a deal-killer for most hotel guests.)

Seen any pretty shower curtains?

Seen any pretty shower curtains? Bonus points for colorful, abstract designs.

(Also, are there any tricks to keep mildew from savaging the part that drags against the tub?)

DIY Shower Curtain??

I'm going to do what seems to me to be a rather weird craft/decorating project, and I'm not 100% sure how to not screw it up. So, we're redoing our bathroom. Yay! But, because I can't make anything simple, I want to use two yards of this Marimekko fabric as an inset on a terry cloth shower curtain. The curtain is exactly two yards in either direction. The cloth will be ordered at two yards long and is 56 inches wide. I'm trying to decide between a couple of approaches, and having not done exactly this before, was wondering what crafty Mefites might do.

Approach 1: Measure and cut out in the middle of the shower curtain a hole to fit in the Marimekko, giving myself two inches or so on any side to sew together. Use the terrycloth left over to make curtains.

Approach 2: Hem the Marimekko and attach it to the shower curtain as is, either by sewing it on, or using some other method I haven't yet thought of. Stitch Witchery seems like a Bad Idea in this context, and I think Velcro might be a little ghetto, but I'm open to whatever here.

In any case, I want to keep the upper part of the curtain, where the grommets are, and I want to try to keep the lower hem, but could be talked out of that one. I have my own sewing machine, which is up to this task, and I figure I will use upholstery thread. Suggest away, crafty ones!
