I'm an avid Geocacher and in my area that often means encountering thorns and other hazardous (to me) plant life. I don't mind shedding some blood for fun but it's murder on my clothing. I'm a guy who has ugly, pale legs and thus hasn't worn shorts in public since childhood. But living in a hot climate, I'd really like to be able to wear something besides jeans/pants in public without feeling insecure. What are your suggestions for alternatives to shorts that aren't pants but still keep most of my legs covered and where would I obtain said garment? I need some new men's cargo shorts. I used to get these Woolrich shorts, except they had a drawstring. I want the drawstring. I need the drawstring. I love the drawstring. I also want a short inseam (6"). Long shorts that come to my knees make me feel like I'm 5 years old. Tried LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, Old Navy, REI, Land's End, Gap, and J Crew, but it all ended in sadness and despair. Ask Metafilter, please show me that there is still sunshine in this world.

I'm wondering about the business end of short films. How do they make money? A no-budget, 5-minute short is one thing, but many shorts have high production values, location shoots, CGI, etc., which can come to a substantial amount. For example the Academy Awards for Best Short nominees all seem to be (I didn't see em) at least (stab in the dark here) $10,000 and way up. Unlike features (even really crappy ones), shorts aren't shown in theaters or on video and I've never really seen them outside a shorts festival. Are the producers of these taking a loss? Is it merely a kind of marketing for a director/production company and a loss is the norm?

It depicted a depressed factory worker who invented some physical, manufacturable form of Happiness. He was happy with his invention for a time, sharing it with friends, but eventually started his own factory making his new Happiness to become rich, at which point he became depressed again. How bizarre, difficult and pricey would it be to approach a tailor/seamstress and ask them to dissect the pattern and clone the shorts with new material?

When I read about the movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, I found that Kerry Conran, the creator of the movie, had gotten Gwyneth Paltrow to agree to be cast based on a short film he'd made to sell the concept. Does anyone have a link to the original short online?
