I have a memory of being told, as a child, that in some (or more than one?) country in Europe, circa 1970, there were two types of stores. Type A was government regulated or licensed, and prices were fixed. Type B was not, and you were allowed to bargain. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? What was the actual situation (if I have it wrong) and in what country/countries?

I'm looking to buy a bike, but I find myself paralyzed by the large number of choices available. I'd like to get a Hybrid bike to do some recreational riding around my neighborhood, in the park, and on local trails and bike paths. I want a bike that feels good to ride, is sturdy and reliable, and allows for customization if I want to swap out some component in the future.

Where can I find places in Kyoto to shop for used/vintage clothing? In Tokyo, I love going to Harajuku and wandering around their used/vintage clothing shops with random old items, like Kinji for really cheap and unique clothing. Is there a similar like place in Kyoto? I've spent 3 days in Kyoto in the past and all I recall for shopping were department stores and other Big Generic Imposing Chain Shops that you can find anywhere else in the world.

Help me buy a slow-pitch softball bat!
I play on a very non-competitive co-ed slow-pitch softball team (we're mostly there for the beer) and I'm not looking spend a ton for the latest and greatest. I hesitate to just buy the cheapest thing around but part of me wonders "Is there really any reason to go above the basic box-store bat for a team that can barely be bothered to track the score?" So, is there a middle of the road option I should be looking into? Is there a minimum level of crappy-bat I should avoid? Budget tops out around $100-$120. Bonus points for gender specific recommendations. Thanks!

So I think I'm getting ripped off. Or, at the very least, the victim of an international company's careless mistake.
I purchased $192 worth of camera film (Polaroid) over a year ago in October 2009 from an Austrian photography company. Apparently, I was never charged for it and a representative claiming to be from the company emailed me
last month (around mid Feb.) informing me of this open payment and that I need to pay this amount. I have no recollection of this order, seeing as I'm a fairly routine customer and this was placed over a year ago. I ignored the first email back in February and they've now sent me another email requesting the $192 payment or threatening to take this to a debt collection agency. I don't think I even have $192 to my name - what should I do??

I will be shopping for a bridesmaid dress in the very near future. I want to try dresses on in person before I buy. I'll likely be shopping alone, and although I have a general idea of what styles and colors to look for, I'll have to make the final decision myself. I've never been in a bridal shop and am concerned about pushy salespeople and upsells. What do I need to know, and how can I make this as hassle-free as possible?
