What can I buy my sister who doesn't want things? Well, most things

I'm completely at a loss for what to buy my sister for her upcoming birthday. She's in her early 20s, lives in upstate NY, works on a farm, and likes anything farm/outdoors/sustainability/anthropology related. She's interested in anything, really, but doesn't like materialistic "bought at the mall" type stuff. So nothing mass-made. I need some special little something that she would find useful and not silly or frivolous. [more inside]

Is there a reason I shouldn't apply for/get a few more credit cards?

Lately I've been thinking I should apply for a few more credit cards in order to take advantage of points, cash back, and other bonuses. Assuming I am not currently in debt, I already own a home and don't foresee needing any loans in the near future, and assuming I pay my bill every month, is there a downside to doing this? Best vacuum for cats? Difficulty level: on a budget

I recently got a really wonderful cat! While my old cheap-o vacuum did just fine before getting the cat, it is now seriously out if its league. I clearly need to replace the vacuum with something more powerful, but the prices of vacuum cleaners scare me (I am a student and so money is tight). Any suggestions on vacuums that will get the job done with pet hair but not totally break the bank?

canine design

I'm going to get a pembroke corgi dog within the next year. Unfortunately, so many of the necessary supplies of dog ownership are just plain ugly. My apartment and my clothes reflect to me my love of all things beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. I love clean, sleek modern design AND ornate, vintage, antique things. Please show me the most beautiful dog related merchandise available! Crates, food/water bowls, leashes, anything and everything related to (beautifully) owning a dog.

Material for making game boards out of?

I'm trying to hand-paint gameboards (five 21cm x 29cm boards, for a boardgame) for someone, except I can't figure out what material can hold up to the dual stresses of being painted/printed on (not by computer, but by the older methods of linocuts or woodblocks or etching) and the day-to-day wear and tear from being used as a gameboard, while still being reasonably priced. Scrap Metal NYC

Is there anywhere in NYC I can go to browse through scrap metal and parts? I'm looking for broken machine parts or empty metal cases or just scrap steel, but not car parts. I've tried Film Biz Recycling and BuildItGreenNYC, but would like larger more useless items than what they carry.

Vintage shopping and foodie heavens in Dresden, Germany

This is a tripartite question, actually. Where to go in Dresden for: 1) Vintage clothing (not "antique stores," but if the only vintage is to be found in antique stores that'll do); 2) French hair products (see below); 3) genuinely good but inexpensive local cafes and restos? [more inside]

I have a single bandana-paisley print handkerchief. I would like to find more, but I am having trouble. What I want is something all cotton that ranges from ~12" square to ~16" square. We maybe should have gone with the cupholder add-ons

Coasters! We just got a new beautifully crafted wood table. It's super fancy with removable leaves and an inset layer (for puzzle doin'!) and extra doohickeys for boardgaming and it's going to be for games, eating, laptopping, and more. Problem: I am a slob. Problem 2: I have never been in the habit of using coasters. Problem 3: We don't own any coasters right now I can make myself use right away. So, how did you get yourself into the coaster-using habit? Would you do some window-shopping for really lovely/amazing/innovative coasters and share links with me? And, what should I do when I inevitably forget to use a coaster to minimize any damage? In the past I've either not cared enough about the furniture for it to matter, or it's not been wood. Seriously designers, do sleeves really cost that much?

I like maxi dresses! However, I spend most of my days in an office where I'd prefer to be able to wear ones with short sleeves, or at least fairly wide straps. Unfortunately, the only store I can find that sell any with this description right now is Anthropologie, which is currently a bit out of my price range. Most Scenic High-Rise... Trousers

I am a lady with a small waist and a generous booty. I look best in "high-rise" or "high-waisted" pants because, well, my waist is pretty high, which means that the popular "low-rise" and "mid-rise" trousers leave acres of billowing flesh exposed between my actual waist and the waist of the pants. What brands or specific jeans or pants (or skirts) can I wear? I've had decent luck with Simply Vera for Kohl's skinny jeans with stretch. Any other suggestion from like-waisted ladies? [more inside]

Cross-border buying/packing/shipping service?

I live in the Bay Area and often find myself wanting things, especially delicious location-specific foods, from stores in other cities that don't offer e-commerce and/or won't ship to me. Please help me stop spending money that I don't have.

I keep buying things that I cannot afford, which forced me to dip into savings over and over again. I have a credit card balance that I cannot pay off this month, which has never happened to me before in my life. I'm feeling helpless, and I am angry at myself for letting this happen. I haven't quite reached paycheck to paycheck status (I am about 1 month ahead), but if I continue like this, my cushion will be gone completely. I don't know what is wrong with me or why I keep doing this - or why it has gotten so much worse. I had always thought that I was pretty good with money while living with my parents; after moving out, either i have gotten much worse or having few expenses masked the problem. I will take any advice or suggestions.

What's good at the Asian grocery?

There's a giant Korean supermarket not terribly far from where I live (the mega Hmart in Burlington). It's enormous--big enough to have small aisles dedicated to different Asian groceries--a Thai aisle, an Indian aisle, a Japanese aisle, etc. It's far more than I'd ever be able to explore on my own. Shopping Cart without checkout

I have a client that has a scooter food delivery service. What I need to do is build menus for each of the restaurants, have the user be able to add items to a cart and then get a total. The actual transaction will occur at the customers home upon delivery so there's no need to deal with payments online. I'd like to use something open source and I've been looking at X-cart but I'd like to consider as many options as possible. WP/WooCommerce doesn't work because it requires a payment gateway and real time transaction (as far as I can tell) I'd love some recommendations. Thanks.
