Hey clothes-loving folks! I've been reading about capsule wardrobes, paring down clothing, and other minimalism-type posts My question is- does anyone know of a good post on capsule wardrobes/minimalism that has color in it? Something along the lines of "hey, I'm a minimalist and I love color, here's how that works" [more inside]
I'm looking for lavender undershirts and socks but searches so far have turned up mostly chaff. Do you have any recommendations? [more inside]
I really like German mid-century art pottery -- think Scheurich, Ruscha, etc. And there's lots of it available at decent prices . . . in Europe. Where I live, it seems to be limited to a few expensive specimen pieces in mid-century furniture stores. But I'll be visiting New York City soon, and they have all the shopping in the world there, right? Where should I go for a good selection in the sub-$50 range? [more inside]
I can't figure out how to find a towel like I brought home from Japan. Can you help? [more inside]
After my weekend spent purging my closet of BAGS full of clothes to donate that are too young, too cheap, too ill fitting, and just too plain ugly, I now find myself with a few holes and thin areas in my (blessedly) more manageable wardrobe. I'd like to fill those holes (slowly, eventually) with pieces that are classic, high quality, and (unicorn!) ethically produced (or at least MORE ethically produced than many major brands). Problem: I LOATHE shopping and am a style/fashion amateur. Where should be looking? What should I be looking for? Details inside. [more inside]
I've just discovered Target ships to the UK, claiming full responsibility for landed costs, which is very exciting for this brand deprived individual (I grew up in New Zealand, okay...) So what should I buy? What's your favourite Target item? I like snacks, desk accessories, tech accessories, beauty, and I have a dog. Probably $100 is my max budget.
I am interested in learning how to differentiate high quality jewelry from common pieces--especially on the resale market. When I go to an antique store or thrift shop and look at jewelry, it all looks the same to me. Sure, I can differentiate by color and number of stones, but that is about it. How could I develop the ability to tell the difference in quality of jewelry, apart from the price tag that a store manager or dealer has put on it? Are there resources that you have used, such as blogs or books, to help you learn to appreciate the truly great from the mediocre? Any general advice for someone that wants to be a jewelry connoisseur? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I signed up for Shoedazzle VIP membership quite a few months ago in order to get a free pair of shoes, and through a combination of forgetfulness and laziness I left my membership active for much longer than I would have liked, so now I've accumulated quite a bit of shoe credit. Yes, I'm dumb. [more inside]
Looking for any good recommendations on Amazon Prime for bed sheets. I just spent my entire lunch break looking and I feel overwhelmed with fake reviews in a hugely oversaturated market. [more inside]
Women and shoppers-in-women's clothes of Metafilter, I have been gladdened by the appearance this summer of women's denim shorts with actual inseams! But I've only seen them in the wild, and haven't found any in stores. If you've bought some can you tell me where? Criteria inside. [more inside]
I have super wide feet that aren't all that long--a size 7 or 7 ½ women's. But my feet are 4 inches wide at the toes. Help me find masculine or gender neutral shoes, please! [more inside]

Being a stay-at-home parent of a five month old, going to the optometrist for an eye exam is a bit of an inconvenience. My vision has not changed in ten years. Are there any online sources that don't require you to have a current prescription? Bonus points if prices are comparable to Vision Direct, 1-800-contacts, etc.
We need a new water heater. Do you have any reason to believe your water heater is better or worse than other water heaters? [more inside]

We live outside the UK. We're going to be in London from this Sunday to Wednesday. We want to take advantage of the sales without wasting time that could be better used sightseeing. Are the sales still on in the places we want to shop? Is Oxford Street as good as anywhere for our purposes? [more inside]
A friend is expecting a baby and the baby shower host is suggesting baby books as the present. I expect some guests will wind up buying the same books ("...and another Goodnight Moon!") and I don't want it to be me, so do you have any recommendations for less-popular baby books?
I just arrived in Krakow from Australia. My luggage did not. Insurance will cover replacement of everything if it hasn't turned up after 8 hours, which will be 5pm. I desperately need clean clothes, a laptop charger (Acer) and a phone charger before tomorrow as I am teaching a workshop. Have located places for clothes open until 10pm. What about the chargers? I am in the Old Town. [more inside]
So I'd like a laptop that is generally not crap, has a discrete GPU, weighs 4 lbs or under (approx) and costs under $1000 (in the US). Any suggestions? [more inside]

My dog is good at jumping, climbing, and loves to eat literal garbage trash. I'm sexually active, have a roommate, uh....there are reasons I need a trash can in my bedroom that my dog ABSOLUTELY CANNOT GET INTO. What are my options? [more inside]
Today I tried on this pair of glasses & I loved them. I did not love the price tag - can you help me find them (or a very similar style) within my budget? Difficulty level: UK but happy to internet shop. [more inside]
I'm asking for a dying friend's caregiver. We want to give him his Apple TV, but are concerned about the potential for online spending (and exposure to fraud). We want to figure out if it's possible to prevent online spending through Apple TV (or another platform). I know there are parental locks possible, but I think that will mean he can't purchase movies and music, which we'd like to allow. [more inside]
Tell me your favourite winter/stress oily acne-prone skin care products. I’m going into Sydney CBD tomorrow. I know there’s a Kiehl’s, a Body Shop, a Lush, and a well-stocked Priceline. I need new face wash anyway, and probably new… lotion? What do I need? (Reasonably priced is always good too!) Help, I hate shopping and have no idea what I'm doing or looking for! [more inside]
The world is frustrating my efforts to only own dresses/skirts with pockets. I am wondering if you can help me find some kind of bag that would work like an external pocket for me. Like a fanny pack. Except I'm not really confident I can or want to pull off the fanny pack look. [more inside]
Please help me buy my first microwave. What do I need to know? How much is reasonable to spend? Australian edition. [more inside]

I would like to purchase some backpacks (approx 10 of them) at a price point of under a dollar each. [more inside]
I am looking for somewhere that sells this pom pom ring. It's a small black tinsel pom pom glued to an adjustable ring. I feel like i should be able to find them in bulk somewhere but haven't had luck looking online. I would try DIYing them but I haven't been able to find that size black pom poms in the right size 3/4-1 in diameter. These rings are my cat's favorite toys and we're down to the last one. They originally came with a nail polish order. I emailed the polish maker but didn't hear back I've bought her tinsel poms but she seems to only really love these rings.
I pretty much live in these Madewell ankle boots all fall, winter, and as far into spring as sweaty feet allow. What is the sandal version of these? Excessive detail inside. [more inside]

I've been coasting for a while on a pair of shoes bought about two years ago, but they're starting to show their wear. I have very little experience shopping for shoes and don't have the slightest idea what my options are. Durability is important, since I spend most of my time in one pair of shoes. Online is fine; Chicago-based is also good. I'm fine with national brands and local.
Heading to Victoria and Vancouver next week - what unique stores may we be interested in checking out? [more inside]
What are the best thrift stores in portland these days? I'm looking for places with nice finds, but without the not so nice "vintage" price markups.

My close friend M is struggling with compulsive spending (and other compulsive habits). I've just found out from a mutual friend that he's run out of money again. How can I help him help himself? So, like many people, when I need a break at my desk I tend to look for something mindless on the Internet. I'm trying to get out of the habit of defaulting to fashion and beauty forums, which I like because they're low-effort, have pretty things to look at, and tend not to get me worked up about politics or whatever, but hate because I get the impulse to buy things I don't need. It's not causing a financial problem but I just don't want my time-wasters to lead to a shopping spree. [more inside]
Where can I find shirts cut for someone my shape? I have a slim, long torso, and relatively muscular, and therefore large, arms. [more inside]
I want to get rid of some random stuff in my apt and I've heard of apps like Letgo where you can sell stuff locally but... I'm nervous about actually using it. Has anyone used them and are they legit, or shady? [more inside]
