Being a stay-at-home parent of a five month old, going to the optometrist for an eye exam is a bit of an inconvenience. My vision has not changed in ten years. Are there any online sources that don't require you to have a current prescription? Bonus points if prices are comparable to Vision Direct, 1-800-contacts, etc.
We need a new water heater. Do you have any reason to believe your water heater is better or worse than other water heaters? [more inside]
Mr Tav is unexpectedly going on a work trip to Washington DC in the US on Friday. He'll hvae a couple of free days during the trip. What should he eat and where should he shop for cool clothes? [more inside]
Help me sort through all the country stuff and find some modern gems. [more inside]
We live outside the UK. We're going to be in London from this Sunday to Wednesday. We want to take advantage of the sales without wasting time that could be better used sightseeing. Are the sales still on in the places we want to shop? Is Oxford Street as good as anywhere for our purposes? [more inside]
A friend is expecting a baby and the baby shower host is suggesting baby books as the present. I expect some guests will wind up buying the same books ("...and another Goodnight Moon!") and I don't want it to be me, so do you have any recommendations for less-popular baby books?
I just arrived in Krakow from Australia. My luggage did not. Insurance will cover replacement of everything if it hasn't turned up after 8 hours, which will be 5pm. I desperately need clean clothes, a laptop charger (Acer) and a phone charger before tomorrow as I am teaching a workshop. Have located places for clothes open until 10pm. What about the chargers? I am in the Old Town. [more inside]
So I'd like a laptop that is generally not crap, has a discrete GPU, weighs 4 lbs or under (approx) and costs under $1000 (in the US). Any suggestions? [more inside]
I'm going to Boston/Cambridge later this month and have pretty much everything planned except where to shop. Any favorite quirky/eclectic places I should be sure to stop by while I'm there? [more inside]
Where can I get pretty glasses in London? [more inside]
My dog is good at jumping, climbing, and loves to eat literal garbage trash. I'm sexually active, have a roommate, uh....there are reasons I need a trash can in my bedroom that my dog ABSOLUTELY CANNOT GET INTO. What are my options? [more inside]
Today I tried on this pair of glasses & I loved them. I did not love the price tag - can you help me find them (or a very similar style) within my budget? Difficulty level: UK but happy to internet shop. [more inside]
I'm asking for a dying friend's caregiver. We want to give him his Apple TV, but are concerned about the potential for online spending (and exposure to fraud). We want to figure out if it's possible to prevent online spending through Apple TV (or another platform). I know there are parental locks possible, but I think that will mean he can't purchase movies and music, which we'd like to allow. [more inside]
Tell me your favourite winter/stress oily acne-prone skin care products. I’m going into Sydney CBD tomorrow. I know there’s a Kiehl’s, a Body Shop, a Lush, and a well-stocked Priceline. I need new face wash anyway, and probably new… lotion? What do I need? (Reasonably priced is always good too!) Help, I hate shopping and have no idea what I'm doing or looking for! [more inside]
The world is frustrating my efforts to only own dresses/skirts with pockets. I am wondering if you can help me find some kind of bag that would work like an external pocket for me. Like a fanny pack. Except I'm not really confident I can or want to pull off the fanny pack look. [more inside]
Please help me buy my first microwave. What do I need to know? How much is reasonable to spend? Australian edition. [more inside]
I am looking for a relatively cheap, reliable bulk online source for three items for the next school year: sturdy, reusable luggage tags (or ideas for a better solution), plastic sheet protectors and 1" 3-ring binders. [more inside]
I would like to purchase some backpacks (approx 10 of them) at a price point of under a dollar each. [more inside]
I am looking for somewhere that sells this pom pom ring. It's a small black tinsel pom pom glued to an adjustable ring. I feel like i should be able to find them in bulk somewhere but haven't had luck looking online. I would try DIYing them but I haven't been able to find that size black pom poms in the right size 3/4-1 in diameter. These rings are my cat's favorite toys and we're down to the last one. They originally came with a nail polish order. I emailed the polish maker but didn't hear back I've bought her tinsel poms but she seems to only really love these rings.
I pretty much live in these Madewell ankle boots all fall, winter, and as far into spring as sweaty feet allow. What is the sandal version of these? Excessive detail inside. [more inside]
Asking for bra advice for a wonderful friend who has a magnificent rack: [more inside]
I've been coasting for a while on a pair of shoes bought about two years ago, but they're starting to show their wear. I have very little experience shopping for shoes and don't have the slightest idea what my options are. Durability is important, since I spend most of my time in one pair of shoes. Online is fine; Chicago-based is also good. I'm fine with national brands and local.
Heading to Victoria and Vancouver next week - what unique stores may we be interested in checking out? [more inside]
What are the best thrift stores in portland these days? I'm looking for places with nice finds, but without the not so nice "vintage" price markups.
I'm looking to buy a nice new Linux laptop and having trouble finding many reviews online of the various options. [more inside]
My close friend M is struggling with compulsive spending (and other compulsive habits). I've just found out from a mutual friend that he's run out of money again. How can I help him help himself? What are some ways that I can support him emotionally without enabling his behaviours? (Details inside.) [more inside]
I'll be in Durham, North Carolina from April 26 - May 1, staying downtown. I don't drive. What should I check out while I'm in the area? [more inside]
So, like many people, when I need a break at my desk I tend to look for something mindless on the Internet. I'm trying to get out of the habit of defaulting to fashion and beauty forums, which I like because they're low-effort, have pretty things to look at, and tend not to get me worked up about politics or whatever, but hate because I get the impulse to buy things I don't need. It's not causing a financial problem but I just don't want my time-wasters to lead to a shopping spree. [more inside]
Where can I find shirts cut for someone my shape? I have a slim, long torso, and relatively muscular, and therefore large, arms. [more inside]
I want to get rid of some random stuff in my apt and I've heard of apps like Letgo where you can sell stuff locally but... I'm nervous about actually using it. Has anyone used them and are they legit, or shady? [more inside]
I am taking my family to London for two weeks this summer.....what is a MUST BUY? [more inside]
I'm looking for a high quality, tiny purse that will fit my 5" phone, Kindle Paperwhite (7x5), credit cards, and possibly a pen and lip balm. Ladies of AskMe, what do you recommend? [more inside]

Once you're interested in aiming for AAA quality, round pearls in a necklace, is there a "beauty" benefit (i.e., not a bragging rights or investment one) in going after Akoya pearls over freshwater? Thanks in advance!
Are there any French stores that are similar to the Dutch store Dille & Kamille, or the Danish store Sostrene & Grene? I will also gladly accept any other recommendations for adorable stores in France! [more inside]
I'm going up to Vancouver for the weekend soon and find myself with a bit of a clothing budget and a favorable exchange rate. I don't shop at the same stores as my woman friend up there due to differences in taste and size range, and my other woman friend there is off at a meditation retreat so I can't ask her. Given the preferences below the fold, where should I shop for clothes and shoes? [more inside]
I'm heading home for a week to visit my elderly but active parents in Knaresborough (between Harrogate and York). Looking for shopping and family outing ideas. [more inside]
I wear a lot of hoodies. But the ones I have left are worn to all hell. Help me find places on the Internet to buy new ones (specific criteria inside). [more inside]
Our TV, a stately Sony Trinitron that's served us since 1999, is dying. We need a new 42 inch-ish TV. I have no idea what to look for in this new flat/plasma/HD market. All I want to avoid is that godawful HD thing where old movies look like cheap soap operas and everything is too sharp and flat. No interest in a smart TV or 3D or anything like that. What should I buy to make our media diet of old movies and Netflix TV shows look the best?
I visited friends in Manchester, England, in what I think was the summer of 2000, though it might have been '99. They took me to a place that had a whole bunch of small shops and kiosks with goth/cybergoth/assorted alternative-type clothing and accessories (and maybe home goods). Where was it? [more inside]
About two years ago I bought these shoes (Gentle Souls Iso Jane) in pewter, and pretty much wore them into the ground. I assumed (wrongly) that it was a neutral enough style that they'd still be in production, but not only is that not the case, I can't find anything similar. I've had an eBay search going for months, and nothing is turning up in my size (7.5 / 8). I would love to somehow replace them. [more inside]
So does anyone have experience/opinions about Steger mukluks, their utility in often-slushy New England winters, and any implications for mild plantar fasciitis? (Fellow MeFite leahwrenn, I know, loves hers!) [more inside]
My sandals have finally started falling apart with the sole separating from the body and making walking more and more awkward. I'd love to find another pair that will also last me 2.5 years. [more inside]
I am in search of the perfect sweater(s). Not scratchy, gauzey, drapey, boxy, or itchy. This shouldn't be so hard, but it is. [more inside]
It has come to my attention that a family member would like a refill of her Joop EDT for Christmas, but it is obviously now too late to purchase online. Looking at their websites, it seems like the usual suspects - Macy's, Perfumania, Kohl's, JCPenney, Sephora, do not carry Joop for women in store, neither is it on shelves in Duane Reade or Walgreens. If anyone has recently spotted this rare bird in a store (in Manhattan or near Rte 80 between the Hudson and the Delaware) please let me know... HELP ME METAFILTER YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE.
I need to buy summer-appropriate office clothing now. It also needs to be modest. [more inside]
I usually buy office supplies from CVS or similar stores, and it feels like I'm getting overcharged. I'd like to feel like I'm getting a good price, even though I'm not buying in bulk (which I'm guessing is where most of the discounts are). The items I'm most interested in are packing tape and printer paper.
Last night at a holiday party I saw a woman wearing a gorgeous A-line sleeveless black dress with a spaced gold floral lace overlay. Help me find it (or something close)! [more inside]
Looking for matching pajamas for my 6 year old daughter and 4 year old son. Between the gender difference and the age difference, I'm having trouble finding anything affordable. Anyone have any ideas? [more inside]
I'm constantly getting ads for these mattresses, and the prices seem too good to be true. Does anyone actually have one of these mattresses? I'd love to hear some real world reviews that aren't filtered through the company webpages.
