Toggles!

Mood Fabrics has been unable to fill my order for these toggles a couple times in a row now. Suggestions for alternatives? Either online or in the city of Chicago? Jacket to be made of this cloth.

needle on a coatrack

I saw this coat while out and about, and I liked it a lot, but I was too shy to ask the woman wearing it where she bought it. Can you help me figure it out, if that's even possible? In real life, it was a bit more mustard and less brown than the photo suggests. Thanks in advance, sleuths of fashion!

Where can I buy Toreta?

I've been trying to track down a Japanese sports drink called Toreta! ever since I saw a character drink it in my favorite new Kdrama Goblin. It's sold out on Rakuten, and Amazon doesn't seem to carry it at all. Where could I order it from instead? Is it too new to be carried in Asian markets in the US? Thank you!

What's New In Edinburgh?

Visiting Edinburgh in January and wondering what the hot new things to do, eat, see, or experience there since my last trip 3 years ago. We usually enjoy unusual museums and collections, vintage menswear , fine dining, LGBT stuff, and historical tours and sites like the Mary King's Close tour (We're both suckers for the macabre). Environmentally friendliest electronics components manufacturers

Doing a tiny bit of electronics stuff, ordering resistors and capacitors and other components. The vendors' cool search engine has hundreds of options and lets me choose among manufacturers. Where can you find motion dolls and angels for Christmas?

They used to have motion dolls years ago......like angles, and carolers, who moved back and forth holding candles, and some lit up and some played music. All I can find is Telco and Rennoc as company names for these dolls. But they are all used on e-bay. I think they were called motion-ettes. [more inside]

Have you seen these sneakers?

I saw a woman wearing these sneakers in the subway, and I was too shy to ask about them. Has anyone seen these before? Website selling cool/ unusual found tools and the like?

I'm trying to refind a website that I used to peruse on occasion. It was a website that had unusual and cool objects. I specifically remembered it having a fair number of tools. Cute fun reading glasses I can order online?

I am middle aged and need reading glasses. I like colorful relatively inexpensive reading glasses since I am good at destroying or losing them. I used to buy them at Flying Tiger, but it appears glasses are no longer in their range. I bought some cats-eye models from Amazon, but they literally disintegrated after 2-3 uses. Too cheap! Bonus if the company ships internationally to me in Hong Kong, but I can also live with shipping to my sister in the US or to friends in the Netherlands.

Where to shop for mid-century German ceramics in NYC?

I really like German mid-century art pottery -- think Scheurich, Ruscha, etc. And there's lots of it available at decent prices . . . in Europe. Where I live, it seems to be limited to a few expensive specimen pieces in mid-century furniture stores. Closet purged...now what?!

After my weekend spent purging my closet of BAGS full of clothes to donate that are too young, too cheap, too ill fitting, and just too plain ugly, I now find myself with a few holes and thin areas in my (blessedly) more manageable wardrobe. I'd like to fill those holes (slowly, eventually) with pieces that are classic, high quality, and (unicorn!) ethically produced (or at least MORE ethically produced than many major brands). How do you judge the quality of jewelry?

I am interested in learning how to differentiate high quality jewelry from common pieces--especially on the resale market. When I go to an antique store or thrift shop and look at jewelry, it all looks the same to me. Sure, I can differentiate by color and number of stones, but that is about it. How could I develop the ability to tell the difference in quality of jewelry, apart from the price tag that a store manager or dealer has put on it? Are there resources that you have used, such as blogs or books, to help you learn to appreciate the truly great from the mediocre? Any general advice for someone that wants to be a jewelry connoisseur? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
