Shipping a significant quantity of books from US to UK. How? How much?

I'm moving soon (UK Home Office and God willing) from the US to England. I will be there for roughly 3 years, give or take, and am hoping that I can have a portion of my substantial amount of books there with me. Previous suggestions on shipping indicate USPS M-bags as the go-to choice, but USPS no longer offers anything but air service on media bags, pushing the cost to around $175 for 44 lbs. This is more than I want to spend. Ideas? [more inside]

Is it really more of a liability to pack my own boxes?

I'm looking for moving/shipping companies to send a couple of boxes of books & clothes from Australia to the USA (as I'm relocating). While requesting quotes, one company strongly suggested that I hire them to pack my things for me as apparently US Customs get suspicious if the boxes were packed by the individual mover (me, in this case) rather than by a professional. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else and the US Customs website hasn't addressed this. What's going on? [more inside]

The answer isn't in the books I guess.

I feel overwhelmed, maybe because I am down with a bad cold, so I am hoping you can tell me how to get three bookshelves of books from CA to NYC. Constraints: cheaper is better, heavier is worse, and being home to get the packages is a serious challenge. Should I be shipping them in dozens of little boxes? Is there a better way? How am I ever going to get my collection out of my parents' basement and into my apartment? Like an adult? Move ALL the books? Cough cough help.

Getting books from Japan to Canada

I'm moving from Tokyo to Toronto in a few weeks, and I have about 100 books (many of them hardcover) that I'd like to bring home. I can't really take all of these with me, since when boxed they're almost impossible to lift. Anyone have a suggestion on a cheap way of getting them home?
