We are looking to expand our lab in the university, but the uni doesn't fund construction projects (!). We can however get around this by setting up our lab in a converted shipping container. Are there organisations that donate shipping containers? I'm in Mexico, and the lab does research on animal behaviour with an emphasis on agricultural insect pests.

I am in the UK and have a UK amazon account. My recipient is in the US. How should I send her books? The books are available on the US website - can I save money and shipping by having them sent from the US? if so how can I do that from my UK amazon account? Thanks, I fail at googling this!

There's a bike that I want to buy from a pawn shop on eBay for local pickup only. It's a screaming good deal, of the exact size and frame that I have been looking for.
Obviously, living in Phoenix, I can't pick it up, and the pawn shop won't ship it. Any ideas (hopefully from a Brownsville native)? [more inside]

I'm moving soon (UK Home Office and God willing) from the US to England. I will be there for roughly 3 years, give or take, and am hoping that I can have a portion of my substantial amount of books there with me. Previous suggestions on shipping indicate USPS M-bags as the go-to choice, but USPS no longer offers anything but air service on media bags, pushing the cost to around $175 for 44 lbs. This is more than I want to spend. Ideas? [more inside]

We're about to move from Toronto to San Francisco. (Yay!) But we have to move our things. (Nightmare!) We live pretty lightly, and aren't moving furniture, so we're thinking the best thing to do is ship a big pile of boxes using UPS or FedEx. Any thoughts on which is preferable? I have the impression that FedEx can be a bit nightmarish when borders are involved, but have zero experience with UPS international shipments.

As part of an artist trading card swap, I made a bunch of little clocks
. Only after I was finished did it occur to me that the little clock hands bend (and presumably break) easily, and there are a lot of places where bits could get bent or otherwise messed up in shipping. What's my best bet for packing and shipping these things? More fun: one has to go to England.

I have a tall, concrete bird bath that I need to get moved or shipped. It probably weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 200-300 pounds. It will need to get from Duluth, MN to Portland, OR. What is the best option here? Do we call a moving company there and try and get it to hitch a ride? Hire a college student on a road trip? [more inside]

What's the cheapest way to send a small-ish (<5lb, maybe 6"x6"x6") box from NYC to London (for delivery to a lab with a receptionist) within a week or less?
I could easily price USPS, UPS, and FEDEX, but I've heard there are smaller int'l carriers.

So I'm in the market for purchasing my first ever (used) car. I'm definitely a planner, but I'm having a bit of difficulty gauging how reliable a used car will be. There are tons of resources whenever I just google the car model + year, but I have no idea how reliable these reviews are or whether they're statistically significant. Want to get a bit more info besides my friend's first-hand accounts of their car problems, but I'm having trouble with this.
Any recommendations for websites or tools to help me parse this data? For what it's worth, I'm looking for a small, manual car under ~$9000 in the PNW.

Can you recommend a shipping company that specializes in international shipping of fragile items like this who will come pack it all up for her? If you don't have specific recommendations, are there things to look for/ask about when I talk to shipping companies? Are there other issues I should consider?

I'd like to ship glass containers carrying liquids to a friend in a Northern state (opening them up and placing them in another container is not an option, as they are carbonated.) It is currently winter and frequently well below freezing outside. Is this possible to do without the contents freezing solid and exploding? FedEx recommends placing thawed gel coolants
in a package to prevent
freezing as a "heat sink". How does this even work?

I am trying to find out the name of a vessel that arrived at the Port of Long Beach from the Philippines on September 9, 2013, carrying a shipment of bananas (see details pasted below). Does anyone have access to any of the databases that might supply this info? It was possibly a Dole-owned/operated vessel, but even a list of all the arrivals at Long Beach (maybe narrowed to arrivals from the Phlippines or the specific departure port, again below) would be a good start. My mother has a toolbox made by her father; it's in pretty rough shape and was made during WWII out of very cheap materials so has nothing but sentimental value (but a lot of it, so cost of repairs are not so important - I'd rather get a good job done and pay more, than be unhappy and save a few pounds). She's offered it to me and I'd love to get it restored and then shipped to me in Canada (Vancouver). She lives near Glasgow and I was hoping to get recommendations for someone there or S. Ayreshire - but Edinburgh would work in a pinch.

I am in Texas right now for the holidays, I have a package arriving to my apartment in Ohio which is very important (it will allow me to renew my drivers license). I am flying back to Pittsburgh this Sunday night, and I'd like to have the paperwork in Pittsburgh with me, otherwise I'd have to drive to Ohio to get the paperwork, and then drive back to Pittsburgh. I called FedEx and they said only the shipper (with a FedEx account number) can re-direct the package. I'm wondering what are my options to save me a trip of driving to Ohio and back. Can I ask my package to be held at FedEx in Ohio, and then pay for them to send it to me in Pittsburgh? Can I authorize a friend to go pick it up from the FedEx location instead of me and then have them send it to me? Are there any other options? Thanks for the help askmefi! Please feel free to ask me more questions if anything is unclear

I placed an order on The Body Shop's website on Dec. 1 for cyber monday. There was some issue with shipping (where the courier company was given insufficient information, and never delivered and instead returned the package), and I never got the package that I had paid for.
I have called, emailed, and tried numerous time to get in touch with a customer service person. I was on hold for more than half an hour each time, and no representative ever responded to my email. I am infuriated now-- they charged my credit card.
What options do I have at this point? What can I do? I want either a refund or my order. I don't care which. [more inside]

I bought something online on November 30th, and just realized that I haven't received the package yet. It turns out the company shipped by Purolator. In my tracking history it says that shipment was delivered. It was picked up by "Barry" at "shipping dock" on Dec. 13, and that it has arrived at the sorting facility at Purolator International YYZ.
I don't know Purolator at all...does that mean it's returned? I am really confused. I've received one phone call that sounds very scammy and told me to go pick up my "freight" in Etioboke (I live in downtown Toronto)...and otherwise no other information about the package. WTH is going on?
