Is there a product that meets the gold standard for the safety razor? One that is durable yet practical? While there are many interesting and beautiful designs to chose from, I find many of them to be a bit vain for my taste, and I would appreciate your input. I'm looking for something practical in price, but my budget should be of no concern when it comes to your advice. [more inside]
There are dozens of UK shave clubs out there, with nobody seeming to have clambered to the top. Anybody have any recommendations? [more inside]
Is shaving your legs as difficult and time-consuming for everyone else as it is for me? I'm asking because I'm curious to understand other peoples' experiences relative to mine. [more inside]
Had a tiff last night with my boyfriend regarding leg stubble. When I tried to get frisky he told me I needed to go shave first since it had been three days. This has come up before and I'm feeling a bit hurt and resentful. He insisted he was joking and didn't care if I'd shaved. Do I need to just let it go? [more inside]
I am building handmade suitcases for gifts this year, and I would like to include a decent straight razor set in one of them. I have spent a lot of time searching for ones that have good reviews and they are few and far between. Hopefully there is someone out there that has experience with these and can recommend a quality set for a beginner.
About a month ago I shaved my head and found the skin underneath wasn't in great shape, pimply and blotchy. I figured this was just a side effect of never seeing the light of day before, so I didn't worry too much about it. Now it's a month late my head is just as blotchy and pimply as it was the first time. What can I do to get it smooth and beautiful—or at least not embarrassing? [more inside]
If you're a woman and use a metal-handle, old-fashioned safety razor for shaving your legs, give me your recs! [more inside]
Which cartridge shaver system should I use to replace my favorite but now discontinued Schick Xtreme 3? Difficulty filter: no safety razors. [more inside]
I get pretty gnarly razor bumps on my chin and upper neck. I've tried the following things to try to get rid of them: (1) shaving with the grain, (2) a product called Bump Patrol, and (3) some kind of chemical hair removal cream I bought at Target. The first two didn't work and the third was too painful to keep up (and also didn't seem to remove all the hair.) Can anyone recommend something else? What's worked for you? [more inside]
I'm sure this may happen to males too. Ever since high school, I've done my best to remain bald through shaving down there. I also get waxed when I have time/funding to do so, but this year I've had more issues with shaving than I ever have before and I want to figure out why and how to avoid these issues in the future while still enjoying being bald. More TMI details behind cut. I know, you're not my doctor. I get that. [more inside]
I have been tasked with a very specific Christmas request: the best illuminated, magnifying shaving mirror available. That's the sole requirement. I think they'd also like if it had a reservable regular mirror side. What is the best illuminated, magnifying shaving mirror out there?
I am a very sensitive, delicate flower of a woman with very sensitive and delicate lady bits to match. I prefer to keep these lady bits smooth, but said bits are easily irritated and thrown off-balance by just about anything - including shaving cream. [more inside]
I want to try and electric razor but I am worried it will irritate my sensitive skin. [more inside]
I have a question about men's neck hair and shaving; looking for input and suggestions. [more inside]
I like waxing my lady parts, but it's expensive and I'm prone to ingrown hairs, so I'd like to switch to just trimming. I have a beard trimmer that works well for the hair above my labia. But I'm hesitant to trim the labia majora itself. How do you hold it to avoid nicking yourself inside? (I've already done this, unfortunately). How do you see what's going on in the back? Help.
What shaving creams were popular in France in the '60s?
I have two large (9'x12') area rugs that have pilled, like a sweater, but all over. There is a layer of pilling, like a web, over the surfaces of the rugs entirely. I was wondering if it would be a huge mistake to try hair clippers on the surface, sort of like shearing a sheep, like a giant sweater shaver. The rugs are synthetic. Thoughts?
I'm a fairly pale woman with a bit of farmer's tan from walking for exercise (moreso on arms and face than legs). I unintentionally stopped shaving my legs below the knees, and now I don't want to start again. How long will it be before the dark, sharp leg hair goes away, if it does? My arm hair is pale and soft; so is the hair on my upper legs that I've never shaved. Will the hair on my lower legs grow back softer and paler eventually? What, if anything, can I do to encourage this? Is there anything I should be doing for my legs other than maybe exfoliating a bit more and the usual moisturizer for dry climate? I'm looking for anecdotal experiences and product suggestions.
I beard easily; even a straight-razor barbershop shave leaves me with a bit of five o'clock shadow. I also have sensitive face-skin so I tend to have a beard. I want to try staying "clean" shaven for a while. Is an electric razor a worthwhile investment? [more inside]
An unexpected late holiday gift has left me the owner of an amazingly capacious leather toiletry bag (this one to be exact) to replace my previous canvas sack. What can I put in it to make it the best men's toiletry bag ever for someone who travels frequently? I'm already putting in travel toothbrushes and simple shaving supplies, but what else should I include? What unexpected thing has been life-saving (or just really welcome) in your toilet bag? What emergency supplies should I have on hand?
TV shows and movies frequently feature characters with five o'clock shadows or a day or so worth of beard growth. Given that production schedules often require long shooting days, how do they keep a five o'clock shadow from looking like 8 am the next morning? How are actor's beards kept at the couple of days growth look when a sixteen hour shooting day could easily have them well on their way to looking like one of the Boston Red Sox? [more inside]
Every passing year I hate shaving more and more and I ponder getting laser hair removal for my beard. Now that it's starting to grey - which as a lighter color is supposedly less responsive to the laser - I feel some time pressure if I'm going to do it. But trying to find success stories and pertinent local recommendations - not to mention pricing ideas - is proving near impossible because I find no sign of average Joes getting it done. What's up with that? [more inside]
My kitty, Shoggoth, just had to have six teeth extracted due to FORLs, including one of these fangs. I'm curious about whether any Mefites who know about vet stuff can explain some of the mechanics of this to me. [more inside]
I have read posts about different epilators and have heard good reviews about Braun, but it seemed like lower to mid price epilators were recommended. I am new to epilating and I want to use it for legs, under-arms and chin. I am looking for the best epilator that is easy, efficient and has high techiness that makes general use of it easy such as wet/dry. What are some of the good epilators to use and does higher cost equate to it being better? [more inside]
I have a rather unkempt winter beard and I'd like to shape it into an actual (but still thick, long and luxurious) beard. Every time I try to do it myself, I fuck it up. I love my barber, but there's a bit of a language barrier and ever since this little mishap , I'm not yet willing to put my beard back in his hands. So I need some YouTube videos or sites or books or salon manuals or something that will allow me to work on my beard without reinventing the wheel. [more inside]
I hate shaving my legs. I'm a hairy lady with dark leg hair, and shaving always itches & hurts, no matter what shaving cream or lotions I use. I usually wax in the summer and ignore my legs in the winter, but my toddler would love it if we went to the pool, and I'm fifteen weeks pregnant. Can I get a leg wax while I'm pregnant? Are there other options I haven't thought about? Depilatories don't work for me, and I'm not comfortable taking my hairy hairy legs to the pool. The last time I was pregnant, I didn't go swimming; I just wore long pants or leggings the whole time. (Bikini line isn't a concern; I always wear board shorts anyway, and I have awesome maternity ones I'm excited to fit into.)
What's the best very-close-shave electric shaver/razor for the face and other sensitive areas? I'm intrigued by the Cleancut and the similar Body Bare, but they seem too good to be true and honest reviews are hard to find. Do you have personal experience with either of those, or another you really like? Or does what I want even exist? [more inside]
So I hear that aluminum is pretty bad for your body (and maybe is linked to Alzheimer's?). I also hear that alum (which is used to close nicks after shaving) is the name of an aluminum compound. The majority of info about alum crystals for personal hygiene tends to be on "natural living" web sites and the like, so my main question is: is there any actual scientific study either way as to the safety of such a thing being rubbed on your face on a regular basis?

Dear face-shaving persons of MetaFilter, what is your preferred electric rotary razor? Mr. Sidhedevil has a tough beard and tender skin, and insists on using a rotary-head-style electric. The most recent AskMe on this was from 2010, so hoping there are some new good models out there. We're in the US, so it has to be available here. [more inside]

Sick and tired of shaving! I'm going to get electrolysis. Here's the catch: I'm a guy. Anyone out there undergone the process before want to tell me what it's like? I imagine it's quite different for men rather than women as our beards are quite a bit coarser. [more inside]
Why do men choose electric shavers over safety or cartridge razors? Are electric shavers better or worse for sensitive male skin? [more inside]
I'll be in lower Manhattan today (Worth St). Can anyone recommend a barber in the vicinity that does straight-blade shaving? I would like to get my regular mustache converted into a Bob Dylan-style pencil mustache. If not right in the neighborhood, a reasonable subway ride away is ok. Thanks!

I'm looking for a lotion, oil, powder, etc. that'll help me get a closer shave with my electric razor. Any experience? While I'm open to less common solutions, I'm optimally looking for something I can just grab at CVS. In the past I've used baby oil which has worked well, but are there any other options (specifically for electric razors or alternative solutions) that might be better? I've seen commercials for Lectric Shave recently and was wondering. Thanks!
