SharePoint and Mac users

I have SharePoint 2010 sites, with lists, libraries and InfoPath forms. SharePoint is only worth a goddamn in Internet Explorer, as you probably know. I have a bunch of Mac users who do not like to use a virtual machine. These are senior-type Mac users, however. What can I do to bridge the gap? [more inside]

Excel-Powerpoint Linking-Embedding Charts-Tables

How to make a compelling case to outsource MS Sharepoint work to experts

This is for a company that is wanting to migrate from on-premise Sharepoint to Sharepoint Online. There's obvious benefits of cost savings to do things in-house, i.e. use IT staff who knows about MS Sharepoint to do it themselves, gain knowledge from the experience. But, what if said IT staff and colleagues are time poor and don't hold any Sharepoint certifications (despite being intelligent generalists) and don't want to take on this type of responsibility? What if this company is quasi-government and has a global footprint? (risk averse) What compelling case can we make to suggest hiring external consultants to do the job for them? [more inside]

Right now we are using Excel to create work assignments. Example: Department 1 has 30 Excel lists each with 1/30 of the associates. This is a nightmare. Help me make it less of a nightmare. Low-cost, low-maintenance web infrastructure for volunteer group?

I have been tasked with finding a web solution for a volunteer group associated with a university. There are already pages on one of the departments' websites, however, it will be months before any changes can be made to that as it's under the rule of a CMS which is about to be migrated and to which we won't be able to really do anything until November. We want all the usual stuff like a blog and a Twitter widget and latest news and yadda yadda, but anything we add - and possibly anything we remove - would have to wait till November if we use the existing hosting arrangement. This is why I want to stick up another web infrastructure for us somewhere else, probably not hosted by the university. [more inside]

Best practices for software development documentation

I do some developery-type stuff at work and the more complicated it gets, the less organized I am. I often find myself wondering why I did this or that or what I was trying to accomplish with it. I reuse a lot of the same functions and bits of code but I don't have a good system of keeping track of them. I know about commenting within code, and I do that, but I'm looking for a larger system of general best practices more than a specific solution. [more inside]

Spinning, exploding Excel-driven web app: How or should it be?

Sometimes, I am a front-end web developer. Frequently, I meet new people at work who want to turn really complicated Excel documents into dazzlingly interactive web applications. Besides Excel's "Save to Web App" or "Save to SharePoint" features, such people ask if I can tap into an industry to support this -- perhaps scads of agencies and web-based or downloadable tools that make "websites" or at least customizable, interactive reports from Excel spreadsheets, data, and calculations. I'm yet to find this an abundance of examples of this. Are there? If so, what do you call them? [more inside]

Open-source alternatives to SharePoint for small/medium businesses?

I'm looking for an open-source alternative to SharePoint for a small workgroup. The main thing we need is reasonably robust document management/distribution, but other features (workgroup calendaring, etc.) would be useful. We're using a wiki now to distribute docs and we need better metadata, version control, etc. The solution needs to run on Linux (ideally). The obvious candidates seem to be Alfresco Community Edition or Liferay, but I have zero practical experience using or administering either. Thanks in advance, hive mind, for any tips or advice you can offer.
