Should I let my housemate know where he stands?

Knowing that two of my housemates plan to leave the third one high and dry, while he has no idea about it, do I tell him? Or is this a breach of trust to them? I've been sharing a house with four friends for about a year and a half this christmas. Three of them already lived together (and had been for some time) and one moved in after me. For the first year or so, we all got on really well, but lately things have started getting really strained. One of the housemates who I get on particularly well with is moving out of the country in the next few months, and two housemates who've been living together for about five years have really soured in their feelings to one another, they argue about stupid things, bitch about one another constantly, and pick at one another for no good reason, but at the same time they're officially best friends.

I've been thinking about moving out when our contract is up for a while, and a few days ago I started making arrangements with other people about somewhere to live next year, having started this, and not wanting to leave my housemates with an empty room, a bump in rent, and no warning, I mentioned to one of the housemates who are always fighting that I was unlikely to renew my contract the next year. It was at this point that he told me he was planning on moving away from his best friend with our other housemate at the same time.

Considering how much their relationship has soured, I think this is a great idea, and I think it'll do them both good to get away from one another. At the same time, however, in talking to him it became obvious to me just how much of this has already been planned, they've looked at houses, debating moving early and sticking my other housemate and I with the remainder of the contract and rent there's no way we'll be able to pay, and honestly the way he was talking about it came across to me as that he just wanted to put our other housemate in a position where he won't have the time to organize something else that he can afford and will be forced to go home and live with his parents, since right now he's only living off housing benefits and a small amount of money he earns singing every week.

Again, I think our other housemate probably should go home to his parents, It's probably the sensible thing for him to do, but I don't think that it's right for him to have his hand forced because someone who's supposed to be his best friend doesn't approve of his lifestyle.

I've mentioned to this housemate that I'm moving away at the end of the year, and hinted that with our other friend going to America, it's possible he should think about his options and what he'll do next year, but he dismissed the question without any doubt at all, he's certain that there'll still be three people in the house because he believes his best friend to be too apathetic to actually move anywhere else.

Despite the fact that recently both of these guys and their issues have really been driving me nuts, we are still friends, and I really don't want to see either of them get fucked over here. On the one hand, I don't want to sell out the one who wants to leave, because he's got a lot of legitimate issues with the other guy, and I DO think they should get away from each other for a bit, but on the other hand? I'm concerned that his existing resentment means that he'll be a real prick about all of this, and will either try to use it as a way of hurting the other guy emotionally, or forcing him to do what he thinks he should do with his life, by leaving it too late to give him a chance to find other housemates or a cheaper place to live. Is it even my place to say anything? I mean, he knows that some people are leaving, I've not been at all secretive about what I want to do next year, and while we are friends, his history with this other guy predates that by a LOT.

Any advice on this would be welcome. I'm really pretty stressed out about this.

How can I make my JW videos embeddable and Facebook share-able?

How can I make my JW videos embeddable and Facebook share-able? I'm hosting videos on Amazon Cloudfront, and playing them in the JW player on my Wordpress site. I would like to make these videos embeddable, my main interest being to make them share-able on Facebook (which I realize is probably its own ball of wax).

I've found scattered documentation, but nothing that really thoroughly tackles this problem head-on, which, it seems to me, must be common: Wordpress, JW Player, Facebook sharing.

I'm not afraid of a little code, but I do need more direction than I have been able to find, and that includes the Facebook API documentation.

Thanks!

Sharing video with Skype screen share feature

Is there some way to share video over Skype with the screen share feature? I'd like to use the screen share feature in Skype so that another person and I can watch the same video (which is on my computer) and talk about it. Is this even possible? I've tried opening videos in VLC and mplayer while screen sharing is on, but all the other person sees is black where the video should be. Any suggestions? I'm using XP, if that helps.

How do I make a folder in the root of a shared network drive inaccessible over the network but accessible to that computer?

I have a 1TB secondary drive in my desktop computer that I have the root of shared over my local network. Inside are 5 folders, all but one of I want to be accessible over the network (one is a backup folder I don't want accessible to other network computers). Before I reinstalled my OS I had figured some way of changing the permissions so that if I was on the desktop itself I could get into the backup folder, but if I was on any other computer on the network I could see the shared drive and modify any folder but the backup one. I just recently reinstalled Windows Vista (Went from 32 bit to 64 bit) and now I can’t remember how I had set the permissions. Does anyone know how I can make that drive shared, and all the folders but the backup one accessible over my local network? I don’t want to set up a different share for each folder and I don’t want to create a separate folder for the shared stuff, I would like to leave the root of the drive shared but with one folder a network user can’t get into.
I am running Windows Vista Business 64 bit edition

Learning about online shares trading very quickly

What is the fastest way to learn online shares trading very quickly? Hi, investment newbie here!

I bought "Online Shares Investing FOR DUMMIES" :) and ready to sign up for a trading game or 2 using fake cash. I would like some tips on what investment paths or style I should take to learn quickest?

I suppose an analogy is like being able to drive unlimited cars on a race track and to maximise the opportunity to improve your driving skills you would try interesting things to learn about the dynamics of a car driving, as opposed to driving normally. I think playing it safe I won't learn as much... ?

Any other ideas or suggestions would also be appreciated. Thanks!

Two SMB shares with similar names. Why the trouble?

Two SMB shares on OSX with same/similar names causing big headaches. Is there a way to force mount points? I have the following two samba shares on OS X 10.5:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
//lamothec@devwebv/inetpub/  25Gi   17Gi  7.8Gi    69%    /Volumes/inetpub
//lamothec@prodweb/inetpub/  88Gi  8.7Gi   79Gi    10%    /Volumes/inetpub-1

They seem distinct enough from the command line, but when it comes to Finder/Desktop/Dreamweaver/TextMate all sorts of shenanigans occur, the most common being:

they both show up as "inetpub" (quick fix was to give them diff icons)

When Dreamweaver or TextMate save to the second inetpub (e.g. /Volumes/inetpub-1) it actual saves to the first one! (/Volumes/inetpub)

It's the second bug that's killing me the most. I'm guessing (unless you know of an easier solution) that there's a way to force the second drive to have a different mount name. If so please hope me!

Accessible playlists

How would one go about creating a playlist akin to a mixtape (ie with specifically ordered songs), to share with a friend via thumb drive/zip file? I know this is possible using iTunes, but what if the recipient doesn't use iTunes?

I want to make a universally accessible playlist, which can be 'zipped' together with notes and images...Is there a software program that will do this for me? Some way I can attach data or formatting to a list of individual files?

Add leaves and fruit, but don't cut the branches

On a Windows share with a complex file tree, is there any way to lock down the tree so that folders can be added by all, but the directory structure itself can't be changed? People keep dragging folders or whole sections of a directory tree on a network file server and leaving them inside another location on the tree; so the HR folder and its subfolders suddenly end up inside the Accounting section. (No one admits to moving them, of course.)

Users need to be able to create their own subfolders, and add documents and move them around throughout the tree; but I'm trying to find a way to allow this while also blocking the ability to move folders from one location in the tree to another, or otherwise make change the directory structure.

I'm not coming up with anything; is there something obvious I've missed?

help my wife and cats get home

Looking for one way car rental, ride share, or other transport east from Toronto. On October 26 my wife is flying into Pearson Airport with our two cats. She needs to get from there to Prince Edward County, about three hours east of Toronto. I've been researching car rental agencies and most of them don't seem to allow return of the car to Belleville or Kingston, which would mean her having to drive the car all the way back to Toronto and then take a bus back to P.E.C.
I'm looking for any or all of the following information:
1 - A car rental company that will rent a car at Pearson and allow it to be returned in Belleville (ideally, or else Kingston).
2 - A ride share opportunity where I might find someone driving east on that day who would be able to give her a lift.
3 - Any other means of transport that would allow a relatively tired woman and two fairly stressed out cats to get from point A to point B (note: the terms 'tired', 'woman', 'stressed', and 'cats' rule out hitchhiking, and probably a bus).
If by some intervention of Providence, you, yourself, the person reading this, are a Torontonian who has just been thinking "saaaay, I'm up for a trip to Prince Edward County around about October 26... if only I had some cats to entertain me on my journey...", then by all means get in touch!
Thanks!

What's the best P2P direct connect software for University networks?

What's the best P2P direct connect software for University networks? Which is the best software (not necessarily the most widely used) software for running a darknet on my University's network?

DC++?
Alliance?
Waste?

I'm off to Uni in a week and would like to share some of my files with the rest of the uni network, as external P2P programs aren't allowed at all.

I'm aware that most people use DC++, but I cant say I like it, its a bit clunky.

I recently discovered Alliance which looks promising. Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

Any tips at all on the subject would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of setting up a hub, running my (thankfully silent) PC 24/7 and inviting people with calling cards slipped under doors, or something...

A movie editor I am not.

I have a project I just completed for my MEdu program. As part of that I created a video. I recorded it on my Panasonic SDR-H18 camera, edited it with the ImageMixer3 crap software that came with the camera and joined two clips into the movie I wanted. The problem? The end result seems too large to upload anywhere. The video is just under 1 GB. So I broke the video up into parts 1 and 2, 790 MB and 227 MB respectfully. I still can't upload even the smaller clip. I have tried YouTube, my own website, the school's website. I just can't upload it anywhere.

So long story short, what am I doing wrong? I'm assuming it is related to the size of the clips.
I'm using Verizon DSL to upload, is there a limit to how much I can send to a website? I have plenty of storage space for the video on my webpage.
Is this whole thing just an exercise in futility?
Obviously I don't want to go spend a ton of money on some fancy software or hosting membership, since this is for a class that ends next week. However it is an online class and people from all over the US need to be able to access it.

I'm fairly tech savvy but inexperienced in this particular area.
Home PC is Windows XP.

Thanks in advanc for any help and suggestions!

How can I get rent back from a room I need to leave

Scary roommate situation. I want to leave and I'm trying to figure out if I have any way of getting my money back, which I really need to help me get another room. I moved into a room in a 2BR apartment on the 1st of June with a pair of strangers who are husband and wife. Yesterday (the 4th) I woke up to my roommates having a screaming physical fight which included banging in the hall so much that my own bedroom door popped open. I believe that opening was accidental (rather than purposeful at me) but still it was additionally scary.

After 10 minutes husband left the house still screaming angrily and the wife was sobbing in their room for at least 50 minutes after, real sobbing that didn't stop. She wouldn't respond to me and I didn't know what to do for her.

For me it was clear I should leave and take with me my valuables and things that I care about. So I did that, leaving with my large bags, and spent the day wondering how to leave the room and how to get my rent money back which I really need to find a new place. I have spent the night at a friend's place which is not someplace I can stay more than a night.

What they have is two things from me, $450 deposit check and $485 cash I gave on the 1st of June for first month's rent/utilities. They had not cashed the check, so I stopped payment on that after I left their house yesterday morning. So that is safe. Although I'm afraid that will anger the husband more if he finds out I stopped it.

I already know I was stupid to give them money without a lease. I was desperate for a place to live after my previous place for June cancelled, so I moved in this place without a lease.

After I was safely away from the house I left some upset voicemails on the wife's machine (I don't have husband's number). She left me sad messages saying what happened had nothing to do with me and I should please come back, this is my home. That implies to me that she thinks it's okay what happened. Also I'm scared of the husband now. I dont want to sleep in the same house with him especially with a door that doesn't lock or even really latch strongly (old house, not in good repair).

I don't know best approach to try getting the money back. I am clear that I have no legal claim to the money or proof that I gave them money whatsoever. I want to find a way for them to give me part of the 485 back, and I want ideally to get access to take away the rest of my stuff, but the money is much more important than the stuff left behind which is just my air mattress, lamp and smaller items. Also I don't want to be inside the house with the husband.

Help with creating a video on demand page for a school TV station

Ideas for creating a website for a campus TV station; basically a blog with embedded videos but I still need ideas and guidance. So I'm part of the campus TV station and we've been thinking about building ourselves a website to publish our videos online.

We are not a TV station that does produce its own footage but we mostly record campus events and put them on DVDs. (There's really a lot more that goes into this it sounds) But occasionally, people want immediate access to videos and I think as a campus TV station it's our responsibility to cater to people's needs. For example, some important people came to campus recently and we really could not publish it reliably anywhere -we broadcast on the closed-circuit campus network and there's a web feed as well but no one really watches TV here.

So I've been thinking about basically creating a modified WordPress blog with publishing videos when we get them. Bandwidth is not an issue since it's mostly going to be on campus and we have extra bandwidth if we ever need it. And yeah, our machines are pretty fitting for that purpose.

I know a decent amount of X/HTML and CSS. I've done some PHP and RoR work but it's been a while.

My questions are on the web site.

1) We'll most likely use Flash. Our workflow is mostly Final Cut Pro based but we can export it to Flash apparently. I've tested some videos and they seem decent enough. However, I do not know much about integrating our own FLV videos into WordPress. Does anyone have any experience on that? I know there are tons of plugins for YouTube or the sorts but these videos will be hosted on our servers.
2) About that; I'd want to use a customized FLV player if possible. I'm not really sure where to start. If this is very hard, at the least I'd want to have a FLV player that allows full-screening. Any ideas?
3) I'm also looking for a decent looking WordPress theme. I remember seeing a paid one that was very fitting for a magazine sort of site but I cannot seem to find it. Ideally I'd create our own template but I really don't have time for that. Are there any DECENT templates that you can think that would be good for this purpose.

That is all I can think of right now. In general, I'd welcome all sorts of comments regarding this; if you have the slightest bit of experience in online video please share.

Thanks!

VGA to Ethernet device?

Where can I find a standalone device that has a female DB-15 VGA port on one side and a female Cat-5 on the other, with a VNC server in between? I work away from the office a lot, and I have yet to find a simple software solution for sharing screens over the net. I've tried oneclick VNC, NetMeeting, and the company's "solution."

Therefore, I'd like try and find a hardware doohickey that takes the VGA signal given to it, shoves it into a VNC server, and out the Cat-5 port on the other side. Has anyone heard of something like this? I suppose it doesn't have to be VNC.

If such a thing doesn't exist, how hard do you suppose it would be to make one? Think I could decode the VGA signal with a Gumstix-grade CPU?

Overall I'm really happy with it, but after using Windows machines for the last 10 years, there are a few things that are taking me time to figure out, and a couple that are driving me crazy.

I want my wife's account to be able to access my Pictures folder when she logs in, so we don't have to download all our pictures twice. I've already set the Ownership and Permissions to allow her access, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Subnetting for Windows?

How do I integrate several sub-networks for Windows/Samba compatibility in a rather complicated home-office environment? I'm having trouble getting shared drives/folders to appear to computers on different subnets, on a weird amalgam of chained routers and hubs.

However, what's the best way to integrate the IP structure of an increasingly complicated network to facilitate sharing and a small server?

How do I properly subnet a network so DHCP is properly propagated and the subnets don't clash and act transparently as one network?

GO HOME!

How do I deal with a roommate's SO? I'm reaching my limit.

When my bf and I introduced our female-friend to our newly-single roommate last fall, we were certainly not looking for another roomie. Since their first date (Sept-Octoberish), she has literally slept over every night. This including nights during which they were officially 'broken up'.

It has gotten to the point where my friendship with her and our roommate has become strained.

It all started when she started borrowing clothes from me and amassing a pile until I demanded them back (after numerous polite requests). Since then she hasn't been the least bit shy to let her inner-bitch out in the form of rude comments and condescending tones.

To add injury to insult [sic], she makes no household contribution in the form of $Funds$ or Effort. She simply comes 'home' at midnight and stays until she has to get ready for work (she lives close enough to run home just before commuting). This includes a lot of time spent without our real roomate here, since he works regular 9-5 hours. Obviously, she needs a key for this freedom.

So, I've garnered some advice on the matter from friends which basically surmises that I should "confront the bitch, and make her pay bills, tell her to get the f*ck out, etc.".

I can understand why these is the only logical answers. but it really doesn't fit my needs. I need a solution that will not render my living situation tense, uncomfortable or otherwise unlivable. I am not a confrontational person, and I need some idea of how to maintain an amicable relationship with both roommate and not-so-roommate.

So, hivemind, give me suggestions that can make this happen. I'm sick tired of being taken advantage of by matters that are essentially beyond my control.

Help me avoid all-out war.

Help me automount my smb share in Apple OS X (reward inside)

Here's what I know: I can access my smb share without difficulty via the Finder/Network or by mounting it manually, but what I can't seem to do is automount my samba share on boot/login. There's a reward and twice more inside. I've tried via NetInfo Manager and I've tried via niload fstab and neither seem to work for me.

Here are the nitty gritty specifics:

Server name: miles
share name: share
username: nobody
password: none (as in you don't need to supply a password for user nobody)

So I am able to do a mount manually successfully with the following:

mount_smbfs -W workgroup //nobody@miles/share ./share

(it works although I get this error when I navigate into it the first time:
mount_smbfs: spnego blob2principal error 1
)

Also, if I go through the Finder and Network it also works. By doing a Get Info on the share I see the following:

Kind: Volume

Server: cifs://WORKGROUP;nobody@MILES/SHARE

But no matter how I try to automount the share I don't seem to have any success. I'm wondering if the password might be the issue and how one passes an empty password in the string?

I've tried various combinations through NetInfo Manager using the following two articles as reference, without any luck. Same with using niload fstab.

I'd be willing to reward someone with an unused license to RapidWeaver or DevonThink Personal if they solve my problem.

P.S. I can give more specifics if needed.
P.P.S. No, I won't be adding any password to this mount, so lets not go there.

Where can I find a global network of amateur stock detectives, as used by Christopher Carey of Mark Cuban's http://www.ShareSleuth.com ?

Where can I find a global network of amateur stock detectives, as used by Christopher Carey of Mark Cuban's http://www.ShareSleuth.com ? .

This question is inspired by the following article:

http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2006/08/digging_deepermark_cubans_shar.html

---- > Quote:
""Being basically a one-man editorial operation, Carey did end up having to hire an outside fact-checker to make sure he got everything right in the Xethanol story. He { Christopher Carey } told me he relies on an ad hoc group of “amateur stock detectives” who he could convert into a citizen journalism crew to help his cause ..... “I’ve been swapping information for more than five years with a global network of amateur stock detectives,” Carey said. “They’re great at sifting through SEC filings, digging up documents, connecting dots and developing timelines to explain the trajectories of particular companies. I’m convinced that many of them could produce journalism-quality pieces with the help of a strong editor. I think ‘citizen journalism’ that is based on documents or irrefutable visual evidence stands the best chance of winning public acceptance.”"

I have checked a bunch of posting but none of the following comes close to anwering what I want to know:
How to share files between a Mac and a PC over an 802.11g network? There is of course Here's the deal. She has a Mac with an external hard drive, I have a Windows XP PC. We can't seem to see each other on the network. To share files we currently send them over AIM but it seems to throttle the sharing to 80KB/s which is soooo slow. How can we share files over the network quickly (like 1MB/s or so)? I have seen firewire connections, but that is out of the question as my laptop does not have firewire.
