Novels, short stories, movies--all are welcome. I find shadow stories spooky and interesting. My fave was a kid book called "The Shades" which explains how the shadows of people live their own lives. Know of any others?

Is there a word (in any language) that describes the precise separation between shadow and light? [more inside]

A shadow can go faster than light, but apparantly this does not break any physical laws as a shadow cannot communicate information. What happens if I tell someone that I will make a large shadow on the moon, visible from Earth, and that if the shadow does not move, then they should phone me. However, if it does move (at a speed faster than light), they shouldn't phone me. Hasn't information been transmitted?

Is there any freeware app that will give you window shadows a la OSX in WindowsXP?
I have tried windowFX, which works but isn't free, and have heard of YZ Shadow, which is free but unavailable.

Long ago, I recall seeing a link (maybe on MeFi, but I can't find it) for a website that displayed some pretty impressive technology used to bring out the detail from shadows in photographs. I seem to recall that there was an online version that you could use for testing (upload your photo and it would lighten the shadow areas). Does anyone remember this, and if so, do you know the URL?
