I have a Brother XL-5031 sewing machine which I cleaned and oiled 3 weeks ago. I do have the manual for it. It is sewing backwards in very tiny stitches. I think this means the feed dogs are not sitting right. So I've cleaned out the fluff on the feed dogs and checked my tension. I've re-threaded upper and lower threads. I've checked the pattern selection and the stitch length dials. I've found out when I press the reverse button, the machine sews perfectly well using the appropriate stitch length, in reverse, as it ought. But forwards, not at all. Mefites, has anyone a clue as to what else I could do here, short of taking it to be serviced? I think perhaps the pattern selection dial is sticking somewhere and doing something weird to the feed dogs, how to fix it? The machine doesn't have a drop feed lever as far as I can see. Novice sewer here and I've got a tension headache. I'm working on piping for some cushions I'm sewing, and just finished ~16 ft worth of it without changing my thread. All my stitches were just fine. When I switched to a different color, I had to increase the needle thread tension to the point of puckering the fabric just to pull up the bobbin thread enough to balance my stitches. Please help. I found my Bernette for Bernina 6800 which has been in storage of some kind since I last used it, over a decade ago. I would love to get it running again and get a lot of use out of it--what should be my next steps? [more inside]
My daughter bought a second-hand sewing machine, a Singer Tradition, which is apparently only a couple of years old. Included in the accessories was a small ziplock bag which held six metal thingies, three of one sort and three of the other. We are baffled as to what they are. [more inside]
My mother's ~40-year-old Sears Kenmore sewing machine is finally giving up the ghost. I know nothing about sewing machines but do know that it looks a lot like the first images here. Any suggestions on what to replace it with? [more inside]
I've read up on how the top and bottom tensioning is supposed to work, but it hasn't helped. I've got the bobbin adjusted so it lets out about an inch when I bounce it by the thread. Adjusting the top tension from there doesn't seem to make much difference. I always get the loops. The weird thing is that the top thread seems really hard to pull out when I do it by hand. It's so hard that's it sometimes breaks. Why should tension that seems stiff to the hand pull through when the machine sews? [more inside]
I just got my sewing machine. Yay! Help me figure out what to make with her. [more inside]

I'd like to buy a used (or possibly new) reliable, easy to use mechanical (versus computerized) sewing machine available in Britain or the EU for very basic uses, mostly hemming, repairs, and making simple things like pillow covers, curtains, table clothes, etc., and I'd love some recommendations. I'll probably be looking mostly on eBay UK and Amazon UK. [more inside]
I am looking to upgrade from my very basic, ten-year-old Elna 2110 sewing machine to something that I'll still be enjoying twenty or more years from now. I know what basic features I want, but I don't know how to translate that into a sewing machine search. There are just SO MANY sewing machines available that I'm unsure how to narrow it down. How do I articulate what I'm looking for in sewing machine-buying terms? [more inside]
My friends were interested in my recently acquired sewing machine and brought up the idea of a craft/sewing party. I have no idea how that would work. Help? [more inside]
What pro or semi-pro sewing machine would be best for a home sewer opening an Etsy store that sells denim, canvas, and Cordura (1000 denier) luggage and other bags? Ability to sew lighter fabrics as well would be a plus, as would overlock capability (a separate overlock machine would also work). This is for a class project and hypothetical, so price is no object.
New Sewing Machine Question! I got a new sewing machine for Christmas, a Janome Magnolia 7318, and I love it. My only snag so far is how to sew thick fabrics. I want to sew thick fleeces for stuff for my dogs and the layers are too thick to fit under the stock foot. Is there a different shank I can buy (not sure if that is the right word) that is higher? I tried to google it but no luck.
Can I learn to make alterations to my own pants? If so, what kind of sewing machine should I get? [more inside]
I'd like to upgrade from hand-stitching, and buy my first sewing machine. I'm only interested in sewing bags (mostly messenger bags), and I'll be using Cordura and natural canvas. What sewing machine will do the job? I don't want to fork out a lot for an industrial machine, because that's just too much of a commitment for something I only dabble in. And I don't have enough space for those antique Singer cabinets.

I'm a relatively new sewer and just got my first good sewing machine. It's a Brother CS6000i. Before I get started on the various projects that I've been waiting to do since my old machine broke, I want to get to know the machine well. I've read the manual. Now, what should I do to put it through its paces? Give me your idea of an afternoon of sewing machine boot camp.
