So my loving seamstress mother is making some fancy something out of velvet. She's ironing part of it out, having just finished off the final hemming stages annnnnnnd... she slips, some of the velvet isn't protected by a velvetboard anymore and touches the iron directly for a couple of seconds....

I'm looking for a magazine from the early 70's that was geared towards natural hippy lifestyles, homesteading, composting, crafts, self-sustainability and organic gardening. Does this ring a bell with anyone and can you help me find some back copies?

Sewing and Internet Tutorials: Find me a *really good* *idiot-proof* internet tutorial on how to sew a button onto a suit jacket such that it will: A) Not fall off for a long long time, B) Look professional and all that, and C) Have some (small) length of somehow robust thread between the jacket and the button, like the other buttons. I have a really squeaky printer. I tried WD-40, but the squeakiness comes back. One of my engineering friends suggested that I needed something similar to sewing machine oil, but perhaps a little thicker, since the gears are plastic. Any ideas on what kind of lubricant I should get? And where I could get it? Aside from the squeakiness, this REALLY is a good printer (Canon MP130), and I really don't want to get another one.

I'm looking for a program that will help me tech edit sewing patterns. Specifically, I want to be able to check that the pattern calls for the correct amount of fabric. This involves putting flat shapes together and seeing how big they are when they're combined. (It's all very SAT, with a touch of Tetris.) [more inside]

Can any sewing people answer this: How can I "recycle" sewing machine needles? It irritates me that after I've sewn some clothes or worked on a quilt, I have to toss the needles or my machine will get all huffy and start bollixing the thread -- especially the bobbin side. Can machine needles be resharpened or used for something else? I live in a small Texas town and it costs a lot (gas prices, you know) to travel over 100 miles to the nearest city to buy a new supply of sewing machine needles. Thanx.

Can anyone recommend a tailor in Seattle or the Eastside? I need alterations done on several pieces of women's clothing, somewhat more complicated than just doing hems, so I would like a real tailor, not a dry cleaning shop that does alterations. I've already Googled, but would much prefer a referral to someone whose services you have actually used.

Good gift/Bad gift?
So I thought that this year I'd get this same item for my son, my daughter, my adult niece and a couple of neighbourhood strays too.
I know for a fact that that they'll be tickled that it's not another flashlight or safety kit...
The item? A handheld battery operated sewing machine. (I can't seem to link it to the product)
These recipients are not handy people but I think that we can, all of us, use this from time to time to fix stuff around the house?
1: in theory, do you think it's a good idea?
2:do these things actually work? It almost has to work on it's own. Idiot-proof. Very simple for us to use - did I mention that we are not handy people?
(though not a weighty topic, I searched unsuccessfully to see if these machines had ever been discussed here)
