My BIL claims that insurance settlements for injury are not taxable income in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I can't believe the state doesn't overfish that particular revenue stream.
So, is it taxable income or not?

I was in a serious auto accident in October of 2009. I do have an attorney. We've filed suit to settle the case, and my deposition is this afternoon. As the time grows closer, I'm getting more and more anxious about this. What should I expect? [more inside]

A friend, a 62 year old woman, was injured while driving in TN; her car was totalled. She is suffering back pain. She has been to an attorney who has retained an independent doctor to evaluate her. The doctor has assessed that she retains 5% PPI (permanent personal impairment?). The question she has - what is the likely dollar value of the settlement based on the 5%?

How do I get a fair settlement for my totaled car in Pennsylvania? The insurance adjuster insists that I am not owed the replacement value of my car and refuses to budge. [more inside]
