Twitter, Ticketmaster, Google, Facebook how do their architecture and infrastructure work. Looking for a book/site which explains how these tech services may be assembled. Obviously not looking for the secret sauce or anything. Just wanting to understand the bigger picture of how large scale technology work and come together.
Not looking to understand the code aspect or nitty gritty details of how each component works. Just broad understanding is what I am looking for. I am a UI engineer looking to get more background on middleware and backend systems.
Please recommend any sources/sites/blogs/books to help me gain decent insight.

Someone made a comment on the blue recently about "this is what happens when private companies are put in charge of" some sort of social service and it got me thinking. I'm interested in any recent books or articles that give a good account of what goes right or wrong when private enterprise provides social services that charities and government-funded programs currently provide.

Canadian tax question: I quoted a client for a job, and neglected to specify whether GST/HST is included. They think the price should be understood as including GST/HST. I think it should be understood as excluding GST/HST. Is there some external standard to resolve this?

You're a young person, in your 20s or so, and you've noticed that quite a few of your similarly-aged peers & friends are in desperate need of care due to major mental and emotional health challenges - which are taking a toll on everything else. However, support services for this group are lacking. What could you learn or train in to be able to be a better source of support and care for your peer community?

Capital Gains on Precious Metals exchanged for Goods and Services? I own Platinum, Gold, and Silver physical coins, bars, etc. and know my cost basis for all purchases and have not sold any. Let's say rather than sell them back to a coin dealer or other similar entity, I exchange gold or silver or platinum for a service or good or something other than currency, what are the tax implications?

I recently moved from Brunswick, Maine to San Francisco. I know there are all sorts of amazing things going on here, but I'm looking for unique, helpful, or interesting websites and services that are either specific to San Francisco, or primarily helpful in large cities that weren't available to me in Brunswick. Anything you'd call "Web 2.0" probably applies, and if it's in beta that's probably a good sign. I've got a (short) sample list after the fold.

What are your
most useful or interesting e-mail subscriptions, newsletters or notifications? I switched gears recently to get more things delivered to my inbox (as opposed to seeking them via RSS or visiting their site), and I've enjoyed the added convenience, and the convenience of centralization around my inbox. I'd like to improve the convenience even further by learning what inbox messages or services you've found most useful.

What was the name of the service that provided you with a free 800 number and credit card processing? Their model was that they took a percentage of the credit card fees and you billed your customers through them. It was a very neat way to setup a small service business with almost no overhead.
Are they still in business?

I'm already certified as an EMT outside of the US, but now that I'm going to school in America I'd like to get certified there as well. However, I don't have a lot of time over the summer for the course. Does anyone know of any really intensive, really concentrated EMT basic course? Like all day, every day for a couple weeks. Does this exist in the US?
