I need a very simple stock quote web service that I can get at programatically. Everything I've found is either non-real time ("delayed 10 minutes") or not programatically available (i.e. an embedded java webpage that only works in IE.) I'd even screen scrape if they let me. I will obviously pay for this service. I don't need charts or anything fancy beyond real time data for any of the major exchanges (I'm not picky.)

Community service: I have an assignment for school to do 3 hours of volunteer work. Anywhere I can find wants a longer commitment than that, and unfortunately, 3 hours is the most free time I can spare this semester. I've checked Volunteermatch. Any ideas? (I'm in Chapel Hill, NC, and don't drive; I have few real skills).

After spending a cool $thou on 'general maintenance' from the dealer, I'm seeking an Atlanta-area mechanic/shop that would work on my 97 Infiniti I30 (which is mechanically near-exact to the Nissan Maxima).
I'm really looking for an indie mechanic with whom you might have personal experience.

I am looking for a simple way to keep a client informed on what projects I am working on for them, and what their current status is. A service like Basecamp is a possibility, but it is much more than I need. Their free TaDa list site is useful, but too simple. I need something a bit more informative, but easy to maintain. Any suggestions?

I "signed" a one-year contract for SBC DSL last month - the higher speed of the two varieties. After a very rocky start where it took them 2 weeks from the activation date to actually activate, I love it. However, I signed up after getting a flyer in the mail for a free mp3 player with 1-year contract. When I called the number, I was told that I should sign up online, which I did. I emailed them last week to ask about the mp3 player and they say I can't have it because that was only for people who signed up over the phone - not online. WTF? [more inside]

I am running a free Web-based service for friends and acquaintances. Lately, the volume on this service has been growing greatly. The next step is to move the service to a professional host. I am thinking of putting a paypal donation button on the site to help pay for it. Are there any legal or tax issues I need to worry about? Do I need a business license? What if I want to start selling Cafe Press items or running Google ads? I am located in the USA.

I ordered something from an online merchant and when I received the package I found an empty box inside. An empty watch box, that is, as the item in question was a watch. When I called the company to complain, I could tell that the CSR was convinced I was a crook... (They promised a replacement, btw.)
Has something like this happened to anyone ? I was wondering how common this experience is.

My current host
is closing down, and since I bought my domain through them it will be transferred into my name before they finally close at the end of the year. However, my domain expires on December 12, and they are so far unresponsive to my emails and have not transferred the domain (it has been two weeks since my initial request). I am worried that if I'm not able to renew it, it will be snapped up by a domain-sitter and I will lose it. In case it isn't transferred in time, is there a way I can beat the domain-sitters to it and reserve my domain? What are the more affordable options for doing this? Will I be guaranteed to get it?

A family member of mine wants to set up a simple site for his home business - schedules of classes, some photographs, contact information, links, etc., and I have suggested that he use Typepad, which I use for a number of projects. However I think he'd prefer a non-weblog format, which leads me to my question: are there combined hosting/construction tools out there, like some of these weblog services, that have a good and very easy-to-use back-end, lots of design/format choices, but are more focused around a more heirarchically structured, top-down site structure?

I would like to totally rid myself of VHS tapes. But I have about 40 of them that I'd like to transfer onto DVDs before I trash them. After that, I will never use a VHS tape again. What's the best route to go in my situation? Buy a VHS-to-DVD converter? Pay to have this done?
Most of it is stuff I taped off of TV years ago. Episodes of TV shows that have never come out on DVD, etc. Is it legal for me to do the transfer? It's not stuff that's for sale. I assume that it was legal (or in some legal gray area) for me to tape the stuff in the first place, so is it legal for me to make backups? I have no plan to sell them to anyone else. The quality is horrible, anyway. But I want to save them before they totally disintegrate.
