Do you give service-providers a special gift at Christmas? Does it matter if they're federal/state service providers (mail person, garbage guys) or people who work specifically for you or your company? Does it differ by country, city, or culture?

I am interested in becoming a humanitarian de-miner.
This FPP reminded about my interest. A brief search has brought up a couple of organizations, but I was hoping some people here might be able to provide some practical insight. Is this foolish, feasable or just downright romantic thinking about making a real difference?

My daughter is researching overseas volunteering opportunities, like
this one. She would be saving up to do this her senior year of high school (she's 15 now). The idea is to live, learn, and serve within another culture. She's thinking she'd like to go with her mom. Anybody know anything about these kinds of packages? Any tips or recommendations or thoughts about her plans?

I want to send to few people (myself included) few pages from a book of my choice, every working day, so we could for example, read complete "Catcher in a Rye" in a month or so.
Does anyone know some online service that I could use for such purpose? I found only "Chapter-a-day" services, but I want to use book of my choice.

I'm trying to research the origin of the term "touchpoint" as it's used in this 2003 McKinsey quote:
"Brands are delivered at touchpoints, which for a hotel include reservations, check-in and checkout, frequent-stay programs, room service, business services, exercise facilities, laundry service, restaurants, and bars."
Today this term is widely used in the industry to describe the ways in which a customer comes into contact with a business, but I can't pin down exactly who coined it or how early it came to be used in this way...

Has anybody had experience with
Charter Communications (in western Massachusetts, if that makes a difference)? My wife and I are moving to
Hadley in a couple of weeks and are thinking of taking advantage of Charter's bundle (available through the end of the month) of basic cable + high-speed internet + phone service (unlimited calling in US) for $69.97/mo. This seems like a good deal. Anybody have experience with them? And if you live in the Pioneer Valley, how worried should we be about the likelihood of an electricity failure disrupting our phone service?

I purchased a service to deliver traffic to one of my web sites. I know it reeks of scam, but I was curious. That's beside the point.
The terms of service don't state anything about the timeframe in which that traffic will be delivered. It's come in dribs and drabs (then entire purchase would take years, literally, to be delivered). And their stats do not match mine. Every single day shows them delivering more traffic than my whole site gets.
That said, I have two questions.
1) What is the legal basis for timely delivery of such a service, given that timeliness is not discussed in their terms at all. There ought to be a reasonable assumption of how long they have to perform their service, right?
2) Since legal action is not a reasonable option (it would cost more to get a refund than the refund is worth), what are some ideas for completely legal ways I could put a spotlight on this company's potentially fraudulent but certainly terrible service?

waiter income tax question. Its common practice for waiters to "tip out" a certain portion of their money every shift to support persons. This might not seem like much, but for career waiters, this means an extra $2000+

Can this laptop be saved? eMachines M2105 bought refurbished from Tiger Direct outlet near Toronto two years ago (90 day warranty). Recently the power cord developed the "jiggle it to make it work" disease. Only it turns out that it wasn't the cord but the jack inside the computer that had the problem. Now the jack is completely loose from whatever it had been attached to and so the computer doesn't go. While online third-party parts dealers seem to have jacks for just about any other eMachines laptop, no-one seems to have this one. And the official eMachines parts supplier says I need to replace the mainboard (which costs about two-thirds of what I paid for the laptop for the part alone).
