In preparation for my wedding, we've been going through some family photos. We've been able to scan some of them, but others are too large or awkward to fit onto our scanner. Can you recommend a service that will scan and digitize these albums for us, while keeping them intact? More inside. [more inside]
I have a LOT of hand-written notebooks. I want to move my note-taking habits into the 21st century as I've written on in the past. Future note-taking devices aside, I would like to ideally have a way of digitizing my existing handwritten notebooks. [more inside]
I want to find a one-time contribution/volunteer opportunity that will be low impact to me and big impact to recipient, the way a kidney donation would be, that isn't a continuing time commitment or a donation of money. [more inside]
Four of us will be heading from Williamsburg (Brooklyn) to Roslyn Harbor/Glen Head in Long Island for a wedding on a Saturday. Does anyone have any car service recommendations that will be less than $100 each way? FYI it looks to be about 45 mins/25 miles on a Saturday afternoon. [more inside]
We recently moved and chose Frontier (formerly Verizon) FIOS for our Internet service since the other option was Comcast. The service is the lowest tier (50/50) but we were coming from DSL with lower speeds and it was fine so we were expecting it to be OK. And it is. Sometimes. Other times it is really slow to unusable. Like, the airport on my Mac won't even connect to the router sometimes. Sometimes it will connect but I have to wait 2-4 minutes for an URL I typed in to load. Sometimes it goes up and down, disconnectng and reconnecting our wifi devices every few minutes. And other times, like right now, it's absolutely fine. [more inside]
I ordered furniture that was delivered to the sidewalk. I live in a three-story walk-up, and explicitly asked the company to send people to carry the furniture upstairs. It's damaged because I had to carry it inside myself. What can I do? [more inside]
We donated a service provided by a third party (i.e. "not us") to a deduction-qualified church. The service has a clearly established price of $150. We didn't pay for the service, because the right to the service was given to us in compensation for the provider botching another instance of the service. Can we claim a deduction on our US federal taxes for the normal price of the service? [more inside]
I want to get better at accommodating others when they are trying to do something practical. Holding doors open for others is the obvious example, but other little things such as remembering to grab a spoon along with food someone requested, positioning myself as to not get in the way of others when people are moving things, keeping things tidy, retrieving the right tools for a job... My fiancee is planning to move to Chicago at some point later this year--if all goes well with our engagement, of course ;). She has a GDL (law conversion) degree (in addition to non-law undergrad and postgrad degrees) from the UK and is looking for advice, first and foremost, on the "lay of the land" and things to keep in mind in transferring environments. I have had a number of technical difficulties with Dreamhost that have worsened over the last year and my account is up for a two-year renewal. I have two sites: one a WordPress blog and the other an old MediaWiki installation. What are good alternatives to Dreamhost, and how would I migrate the WP and wiki installations off their servers and onto the new hosting service?
After some research, I think I've found my ideal backup solution. It involves me:
- Manually creating a Macrium Reflect encrypted image file of my data once a week
- Storing the encrypted image file to two external HDDs
- Placing the external HDDs in two different (safe) physical locations

If you had to choose something that could visually represent a cleaning service for houses and businesses in an unusual, offbeat way, what would it be?
My bf has been trying to get internet service in his apartment for several years. Other people in his building have AT&T, yet whenever he tries to sign up, they tell him that service is not available in his area. We are at our wit's end. Please help! [more inside]
My husband owns one small rental house. He had a tenant for several years (who has recently moved). Now that we are screening for new tenants we realize that we must educate ourselves anew about laws pertaining to service animals. We are completely on board about doing things lawfully, but it hasn't been easy to determine what we can and can't do. There seem to be tons of gray areas. [more inside]
We're located in zip 97035, currently get Comcast and, frankly, it's pretty slow and, worse, unstable. So spotty that I feel like I'm living in the late 90's.
I have too many retirement accounts at too many institutions (7 going on 9). I dislike managing them all and would like to hire someone. I don't need help planning or making decisions. I need an administrator to buy my already chosen funds as money is deposited and to give me consolidated reports once per year. Does anyone know is this type of service exists? [more inside]
Is there a cloud PDF hosting service that allows group commenting/highlighting? Think google docs, but for PDF commenting. Price should be free or $1/$2 per month per user.

I'm looking for a service or application that will make it easy for me to allow anyone to browse, analyze, and visualize the results of several large surveys (hundreds of questions, thousands of responses). Nothing overly complex – I'd just like people to be able to do some basic cross-tabulation and analysis of the survey responses. [more inside]
So my sister just had her second wee tot and we thought it might be nice to get her and her hubs a gift certificate from one of those places where you can pick from Many restaurants and then little men bring you food. Google suggests there are more than one in Hogtown. Any recommendations or disrecommendations?
I work for a small eCommerce company that provides customer support via live chat and e-mail, and relies heavily on it. The people who chat with the agents are not necessarily people who have bought or sold anything or even used the site yet, so being able to ask questions in real time could help them decide whether to use our site. We would like to implement a helpdesk solution that does chat very well and can provide good analytics so that we can assess agent ratings, why the customer contacted us, and issues that are driving up volume. It also has to be a third-party cloud-based solution because we don't have the resources to set it up on our own system. Do you have any recommendations? [more inside]

I have an 18 month old Trek 7.1FX hybrid bike ($450 new) that I use to commute 5 days, 120km per week. Should I spend half the cost of a new bike on a service, or put that towards a new bike? [more inside]
I've been working for a medical supply company for almost a year now within the medical records department. Excited at first when I started last May of 2013 after being laid off for 3 months from my optical job for 8 years. Double the pay plus benefits to boot. Fast forward to April now and I've become semi-miserable the past 2-3 weeks. [more inside]
I've heard a couple of times now that the Peace Corps may start developing programs/sending volunteers to hard-hit places in the US, that are the functional equivalent of third-world countries. There's (unsurprisingly) nothing of the sort on their website, but I think it's a great idea, if it could be done in a way that did not offend the pride of the state in question. Does anyone have information as to whether this is an actual proposal?
My friend has an HSBC Mexico account, that had about 40,000 dollars in it.. he didn't use the account for a year, he called today to get a new checkbook, and found out the account had zero balance in may of 2013, and the account was closed. HSBC Mexico said they can't give more information unless he goes in person to a branch in Mexico. He is willing to hire a lawyer, or Power of attorney, or someone to investigate this in Mexico who legally represent him. He is currently far from mexico and can't make it there any time soon. His mom is in Mexico, can she get power of attorney? Any advice on how to do this? How can he go about finding a lawyer in Mexico who can help him? Or what actions can he take? He suspects fraudulent activity as he did login to his internet banking last year and saw all his money there.
I recently discovered the identity of a long lost relative who is deceased. Apparently he was in and out of prison his whole life for serious crimes. This was in the Atlanta area from the late 50s thru the 80s. Is there any kind of service available that could search local newspapers for articles about his arrests or trials? [more inside]
If you are part of a tenants and residents group or a homeowners' association, have you ever encountered a group which was the entrusted holder of equipment for use by anyone, all year? I am thinking of items that would be missed were they gone. I know a lot already about single-resident-initiated projects. I am more trying to find out if the presence of the items made you more proud or not in your neighborhood and if you ever use or used the item(s).
We're going on our honeymoon and staying at JW Marriott and a Ritz Carlton in Oahu and Tokyo, respectively. Since it's our honeymoon, I'm wondering what sorts of 'gratis' services can we attempt to ask for before we arrive? These are things like having them call for hard-to-get restaurants to welcome gifts, to notes thanking us for coming. Wrinkle-- I'm using points (i.e. these are free) but have top Marriott Status (which doesn't get me anywhere at Ritz, I know). 1. Does anyone have any experience in this regard? 2. I booked online, how can I request/let them know regarding this? E-mail? Call? Who? 3.Bonus question: does anyone have any suggested Tokyo spots we can/should ask for help getting in?
I'm like every other post-college twentysomething in lots of ways: I make too little money, watch too much Netflix and indulge in an existential crisis oh, about once an hour. Also, like many in my cohort, I love the idea of packing up a ratty old duffel bag and heading off to some far corner of the world to taste, see and do all I can, while maybe giving myself either a leg to stand on once I return to the job market here or the warm-n-fuzzies that come from volunteering and/or service learning. All pretty standard fare. Here comes the doozy of snowflake: I'm in a wheelchair and have certain difficulties with speech fluency, owing to my CP and spastic diplegia diagnosis. Try as I might, I can't get myself to give up on the dream of spending a year or more abroad, even with all this in my way. Help me get there, oh beautiful hivemind? [more inside]

I've been dropping off my laundry for the past several years now, but really only know about the drop and fold. My work wardrobe is more business attire these days (male), but can't seem to figure out the terms and services usually available. This may sound a little silly, but I run into language barriers and unclear signs in every laundromat in a 10 block radius. So whats usually available besides the classic wash & fold (and dry cleaning)? -I have button down shirts, what does pressed mean? -Whats the correct term for wash and iron? Sometimes they look puzzled. (sometimes they don't have this service) -If you have your shirts done itemized, the $1.75 each option, what are they doing? -How do most men get there work shirts laundered at these places? Thanks, and note: these laundromat persons around me are all pleasant, and hard workers, but I just can't figure out whats what.
I placed an order on The Body Shop's website on Dec. 1 for cyber monday. There was some issue with shipping (where the courier company was given insufficient information, and never delivered and instead returned the package), and I never got the package that I had paid for. I have called, emailed, and tried numerous time to get in touch with a customer service person. I was on hold for more than half an hour each time, and no representative ever responded to my email. I am infuriated now-- they charged my credit card. What options do I have at this point? What can I do? I want either a refund or my order. I don't care which. [more inside]
We're shopping for a mortgage (in the DC area), and are feeling anxious and frustrated that 1) it's so hard to know who we'll end up with because so many lenders/originators are likely to sell our loan and/or servicing after closing, and 2) it's easy to find complaints about most servicers out there and hard to find anyone that's satisfied. What has your experience been like with the place(s) that own and/or service your mortgage? Or should we put all that to the side and just try to find someone with the best rates/fees and the best reviews/recommendations regarding smooth and quick closing? [more inside]

I am a medical writer working on a large project. Part of this project will involve posting videos of physicians along with a transcript of whatever the speaker is saying. Forgive the crappy typing as I'm doing this on my phone. 2 days ago the transformer in front of our house was struck by lightening. We were without power for a day (which really sucks since we're on a well so without power we have no pump to get water). Anyway power restored but then I notice no router. The router got fried by the lightening and so I call Verizon fios and talk to dude who tells me that the earliest they can send someone out, because its not just router that fried but apparently the main thing to our house as well, is September 10th. I'm pretty pissed and frustrated. I get that it's not their fault and it might be restored earlier but come on, 8 days? Do I have any recourse? Like not paying for 8 days I have no service? I'm thinking of switching but we've only got 2 ISP's in our area, Cox and Verizon. Even the Verizon customer service guy was apologizing and saying that they are short staffed etc. Do I call every day? What's the best way to deal with this. Needless to say right now I'm thinking Verizon sucks in the worst way.
