I'd like some recommendations on file server hardware. Ideally I'd like something with space for 6 3.5" SATA drives, the more the better.
The server must be able to run FreeNAS and Linux with only modest hacking. I'm not averse to modifying something to get it to do what I want, but since this is going to be a production machine (albeit for home use) I shouldn't have to break out the soldering iron and JTAG cables just to get the OS setup.
CPU and RAM don't matter, provided the machine can support a CPU made within the last six years and can accommodate 1GB+ of RAM. Bonus points for the following: space for multiple NICs, IBM, easy access to internals, relatively quiet.
Budget max. is $400 *excluding* drives, and used equipment is (obviously) totally fine!

Medium sized non-profit looking to purchase new Hardware to run Sage MIP accounting software for 5 users. Any recommendations on type of hardware to buy for value: does one need a "server" these days for this type of situation or will a desktop work?
How about reliable easy back-up options?

I have a new laptop on which I run Windows 2008 Server R2 on. I'll be using it for demos and such as well as an opportunity to learn more about the features of R2. I didn't know you can't use Hyper-V with a wireless card, so I'm forced to do some finagling to get the VMs to talk to the outside world. What I'd like, though, is for machines on the network be able to access VMs.

Email and basic web-browsing solution using a server in the city, dialup terminal in the bush - is it possible? I have a friend who operates a business at two locations in a 3rd-world country: (1) a city-based business office in which he is able to get ordinary DSL-speed and relatively reliable internet access, and (2) a remote site in which he has unreliable dialup-speed internet access. His problem is that #2 does not cope well with photos, videos, or anything bigger than about 100K, all of which he frequently gets as email attachments.

I have a CentOS server with a directory of some MP3s. What is the easiest way to have a radio stream setup so I can listen to them at work or on my phone? I looked at Shoutcast and it seems perfect, but I can't seem to figure out how to get it to randomly pick something from a directory of music instead of connecting to Winamp on a host machine.

I use a CMS which needs domain.com/index.php/template/filename in order to work. I used to have an htaccess file which would make domain.com/template/filename work fine (ie, it would load the correct page even without the index.php there). Dreamhost recently upgraded its software and the htaccess file no longer works. Is there a solution for this problem?
