I'm considering purchasing Minecraft Realms for my sons and their friends, but I have a few reservations. Looking for tales from early adopters. [more inside]
Hey all. I'm starting a new job as a server on Monday, and I have to bring my own black pants and black non-slip shoes. This is my first time working in a restaurant outside of the bar or kitchen, so I'm not sure where to go (online or in person, I work in DC) to get the requisite gear, and what I should buy. United servers of MeFi--any recommendations on work pants and shoes?
I've set up a webdav service on my home server and am trying to back up my Zotero files onto it. The webdav service seems to work perfectly through a browser or cadaver but Zotero just stalls -- any suggestions? [more inside]
I'm in the process of setting up a home server that I would like to be able to address by the same domain name ( www.whatever.org ) both from the outside world and from within my home network. Is there an easy way to do this? [more inside]
Someone linked to CloudatCost on Metafilter recently and, on a whim, I sprung for the $35 for life plan -- so I'm now the proud owner of a virtual cloud server. But I'm kind of a doofus and don't know what I can actually do with it. [more inside]
If I've upgraded PHP on my Mac, should I now avoid all OS X Updates? I'm hosting a website on a Mac mini in a datacenter, and some of my software required a newer version of PHP than what's included out-of-the-box in OS X Mountain Lion. I keep getting the notification saying system updates are ready, and restart to install. But I'm scared it's going to overwrite my PHP upgrades and break everything. And it took me an insanely long time to get the PHP upgrade to work properly and play nicely with OS X Server.
At my place of employment, I have been charged with physically securing our two servers. The decision has been made to bolt them to the concrete floor in a cage. I don't know how to shop for a server rack. We have an old one that they're on now, but it's an open rack, without sides or locks. I need one that's more of a cage, to keep people without the key out. It'll have to fit at least 8U worth of servers, and also accommodate a midsized tower somehow, and be 1000mm deep minimum. How do I shop for this? I can't find any information on whether any of the racks I'm looking at are bolt downable.
I stupidly let a web hosting account expire without backing up and transferring my site to my new server. I'm talking to the host to try to get access to my data (fingers crossed), but in case that does not work out: Is there a way to efficiently harvest Google's entire cache of a specific domain? Something else I should consider? I would like to act fast on this, and I don't have any programming/tech-fu skills.
Any ideas on how I could have one PC listen for a specially formatted packet/etc., and when it detects that packet/etc. shut down a program? [more inside]

How can I remote into Windows Server 2008 R2 from a PC with Win7 Home Premium? From what I've read, the built in remote desktop stuff only works with Professional and above. I need the capability for a class project, not for production, so security isn't a huge issue here.
I have a situation with aliases/virtual directories that would be easy for me to solve in Apache, but with IIS I'm jumping through some hoops. Am I on the right track, or is there a better way? [more inside]

Apparently as the air system in our office building has degraded, the heat in our offices during the spring and fall when the AC shuts off has become unbearable as air that is hotter than outside is blown around. Bad for people, but worse for our server room. It has gotten to the breaking point and we need to do something. I'm looking for a way to cool off our servers in the transition periods between winter and A/C being turned on. [more inside]

Please help me configure and secure my Ubuntu-based combined home file server/public web server/VNC server!
Please help me configure and secure my Ubuntu-based combined home file server/public web server/VNC server! I am building a low-ish power home file server, which will likely run Ubuntu 11.04 or 11.10 (possibly server edition), and I should be able to set up a basic samba share easily enough. But I would also like to use the same computer to serve a few basic webpages, and I would like to provide ssh and ideally VNC or RDP-like access from outside the LAN. I can probably get the basic software set up, but I'm a n00b when it comes to NAT stuff, firewalls, and security issues generally. I would also appreciate help with setting up dynamic DNS. Why might a process not use all available physical memory under Windows Server 2008 r2 standard? I have 32Gb of RAM acknowledged by Resource Monitor, of which 19.4 are allocated to a process (the IBM solver CPLEX running in command line form from Power Shell) that has just thrown a controlled OOM error despite there being another 12 Gb marked as available. I'm going to assume (to start with) that the program itself isn't the culprit, but is there a per-user limit switch, a per-process limit switch or something similar in 2008 r2? Any other ideas?

Email and basic web-browsing solution using a server in the city, dialup terminal in the bush - is it possible? I have a friend who operates a business at two locations in a 3rd-world country: (1) a city-based business office in which he is able to get ordinary DSL-speed and relatively reliable internet access, and (2) a remote site in which he has unreliable dialup-speed internet access. His problem is that #2 does not cope well with photos, videos, or anything bigger than about 100K, all of which he frequently gets as email attachments. [more inside]
