Back in the 70's/80's, I remember seeing a series of scifi/fantasy books, where the cover art for all the books had a consistent theme of a red/orange sun that figured prominently. What was it? [more inside]

Asking for a friend: With the use of Fourier series, I'm trying to solve an ODE of the form L*y'' + R*y' + y/C = r(x), where r(x) = 1 - x^2 for |x| <= 1, i.e. has a period of 2. To do so I need to represent 1 - x^2 as a Fourier series. In doing so I have to integrate e^(-n * i * pi * x), but I've reached a stumbling block. [more inside]

Does anyone know where (or even if) I can get hold of a copy of the 1980's SABC (South African TV) series 'The John Ross Story: An African Adventure', made and set around the same time and locations as their excellent 'Shaka Zulu' series? I know it exists but I can find no mention of its availability in any format, or even at the IMDB... Thanks in advance!

I have directv and occasionally they give customers free access to pay channels to tempt us to sign up. I was watching one of the channels, which I think was called Universal, and there was a really funny show that I think was Canadian, about a middle aged guy on his second marriage with two kids from a previous marriage and two little kids, and a really hot 20 something sister. The scene for the show was this: An annual family reunion BBQ to celebrate the wedding anniversary the 60 something grandparents, and preparations for it. The plot, the old man gets drunk and announces that he wants a divorce because his wife is a nag. Very very funny stuff, sibling rivalry, at all levels, awkwark moments between ex and current spouses, some touching moments about the older children being the spawn of inferior breeding, very very funny. I want to stream it, but I don't even know the name of the network, let alone the name of the show. [more inside]

Fiction series spanning 30+ years? I'm almost done re-reading Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Before that, I read Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series. can you help? in 1990 there was a television series called Gophers. In short it was a comedy about a common type gopher family living next door to the very prim and proper rabbit family and the characters were all life size puppets. i have searched long and hard to find any information possible on this series and so far have managed to find only a short cast list and a small snippet from the theme tune and no one i know seems to remember it at all. Is it possible anyone has any information on what happened to the series and whether it was ever released on video?

Recently I've become a devoted fan of J.J. Abrams' works. Felicity, Lost and Alias used to fill in my evenings perfectly. But now - during the summer break - I find myself watching something I do not even want to watch. Could you recommend some similar directors or series which are made with the same level of professionalism one can find in the series mentioned above?

Historical movies. I love movies taking place in older times, and I have a particular fascination for the golden years of the British Empire, and the European civilization during this era. With the completion of the Star Wars sextology [sic], I was looking for recommendations of other science fiction/fantasy space operas. I just bought the Doc Smith's Lensman "prequel", Triplanetary, and his first Skylark book. Any other suggestions or comments on these (i.e. should I start with Galactic Patrol in the Lensman series? Read Skylark before Lensman)? Suggestions from across all media is welcome (Babylon 5, etc.).

I'm a huge fan of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series of novels. Recently I took a break from the books, not only to catch up with all the other books I was neglecting in favour of my literary addiction, but also because I felt I needed a vacation from my old friends the captain and the doctor. Now I'm wondering: What are similarly good and addictive novels, or series of novels? [more inside]
