Print-on-demand that isn't CafePress, Zazzle, DA, or RedBubble?

I'm looking for a print-on-demand site for prints and possibly calendars of my illustrations. But not CafePress, Zazzle, DeviantArt or RedBubble. Who's left? DeviantArt has worked well for me in the past, and RedBubble seems pretty good too, but I'm looking for something with less of a community vibe to be my main storefront. I just want to sell the things! I've never been crazy about the quality of CafePress and Zazzle prints. I would even be willing to print some things the traditional way, but I'd still need someone else to handle the orders and shipping, and I like the upload-it-and-forget-it convenience of on-demand.

So... are there any other options?

how to get rid of a car quick

How do I get rid of a car in the SF bay area? Slightly above junk level... Simple question. I'd like to quickly and easily sell my car, ideally in the next week or so. I have the title sitting around somewhere, and there are no liens on it. The car needs a few grand of work, and it's not worth much even before work, so it's not something I could take to the private party market. At the same time, I think I could do better than just sending it to a junkyard for parts.

This would be a perfect moment for Carmax. Except: I live in Palo Alto, CA, and the closest Carmax is 60-some miles away in Modesto. I'd really like to take it somewhere accessible by public transportation so I can just drive it over there, sell it, and take the train home.

Does anyone know anywhere Carmax-like but actually in the bay area? Or have any other bright ideas? Should I just craigslist it?

Something to get off my chest

If I strap a suitcase to my chest so that it's open, almost like one of those trays that an old-style 'cigarette girl' has, and walk on the street downtown, selling little odds and ends, is it legal? I wouldn't be selling cigarettes, maybe little handmade zines, candy, quirky items that you might find on Etsy. I ask this because in my head, this is kind of a grey area, legally.

I have googled garage sales, and in some places they want you to tell the city that you're going to have one, but in other places they don't care, or the law goes unenforced. But then the other day I passed these tables on the sidewalk downtown and the people there were looking for donations and signatures to shut down puppy mills and cruelty to animals. I asked them how it was they were just on the street outside this major dept. store and they told me that they had to apply to the city for a permit. Which leads me to think that I would need a vendor's permit too.

But then I think about the people who sell stuff on Craigslist, then meet in some parking lot to do the trade. Technically they are selling something too.

I guess what I am asking is, is it okay to sell stuff off your chest on the sidewalk if you are just walking along with the wares displayed on your chest-tray? Has anyone heard of such a thing before?

How do you market and sell wine?

my parents are in danger of losing their farm, because they aren't selling any wine. People say the wine is great but the marketing and name are ugly and cheap. My brother and I need to learn about pinot noir wines and the wine industry quickly to see if we can help. I don't really drink very often, and really know bugger all about wine. I grew up on farm in south gippsland, victoria, australia.
After I left home 20 years ago my parents began growing pinot noir grapes establishing and maintaining the winery has been very expensive.
It has been a difficult journey for them and a massive drain on their finances.

Now after 20 years of trying they are finally producing
what are said by others to be really great wines.
Oddly, I think this has been the final straw,
that they are producing great wine and still the winery is not profitable
and they are talking about selling up.

Why isn't the wine selling?
Marketing has been handled by a friend who is doing a lacklustre job.
It's only for sale in one restaurant (who love it), but it has a silly name with an embarrassing label.
It's not selling because it isn't for sale anywhere.

A wine maker and the restaurant owner have told us one batch should be selling for over $50, and the other one for a bit under, but the label and name are so bad that it makes it look like a supermarket chain's generic brand.

There is a cellar full of unlabeled wine.
My brother and I have made a new label and are preparing a website,
We want to try and get the wine some publicity and into some bottle shops, there would be no profit for us involved, we just don't want mum and dad to sell the farm. I am about to have a child and I really want to take h--* there.

But I know nothing about wine.
How can I get a trustworthy appraisal of whether it really is good wine?

My plan for going to boutique bottle shops is to be honest, without disclosing everything, and say that it has only been for sale exclusively through a restaurant, and that we have given it a new name to sell through a few boutique wine shops.

but I really don't know what I am doing

so i put my problems before the hive an call for guidance

*(promised my partner i won't disclose the gender)

Best Way to Sell Household Goods?

In six months, I am moving to Alaska. What is the best way to sell my household goods? I won't need furniture, kitchen supplies, etc. up there. I currently have the standard accoutrements of a post-college, big-city young professional; most of my furniture is nice but of the Ikea variety, my dishware and appliances range from meh to nice, and I have tons of books. I'm going to be flying up, so I need to fit everything I take into three suitcases and a carry-on. My parents can take custody of some stuff (probably mostly books) but not furniture. I don't want to put anything into storage.

Of course I've thought of Craigslist, but is there a better way? I'd like to maximize the cash I can put away from selling my things. I'm also interested to know what the proper timeline is. Can I expect to get rid of a one-bedroom apartment's worth of stuff in a month? Two months? Two weeks? I live in a large East Coast city with a reputation for transiency. Any bonus moving to Alaska (Anchorage) tips also appreciated!

Anonymous because I haven't given notice at work, and won't for a while. Throwaway email: movingtoalaska10@gmail.com

Renting out a Chicago condo

My grandpa lives in Chicago and has decided to move into a retirement community (also in Chicago). We are not sure what to do with his condo. The mortgage is paid off, but the assessments come to about $550 a month with taxes being around $1000/yr. We would like to sell the condo at some point, but right now market is so bad that it might not be worth selling. We are considering renting it out, but have never had experience with renting. We believe we can rent it out for about $1,000 a month. Has anyone had experiencing renting out their house/condo? We're not trying to make a lot of money in renting it out. We just want to wait out the bad market without my grandpa having to struggle to pay the assessments/taxes in addition to the rent for his new apartment.

What has your experience with renters been like? Did you use a property management company? How did you handle repairs? I've read horror stories about tenants not paying rent, refusing to leave and trashing the place. Does anyone have any suggestions in finding honest tenants? I'm interested in both good and bad stories. We want to go into this with our eyes open.

Money + Art = Profit?

Best way for a hobbyist photographer to sell prints? In NYC. Should I go hang out at Union Square with some prints? Somewhere online? Should I have a website? Should I make editions and number them?

How much of a profit should I be expecting from each piece?

Should I offer to take photographs of people? Is there any money in artsy/impressionistic photography on commission?

My apartment has a great print and two people have offered to buy a print of the same photo (for real, not out of politeness). So I'm thinking I have a decent opportunity to make a little cash from a wider audience if I hustle a little bit.

Cheers, and thanks.

Please teach me the science of buying and selling stuff.

I'm considering a slight career change into the online retail sector and I'd like to know more about distribution models, purchasing from distributors and manufacturers, and how product prices are calculated. I'm in the software business right now, so I have a pretty strong grasp on how software is priced and distributed. What I really want to know is the science of buying, storing, selling and shipping physical items. How do you know what to buy and how much? When do you start adding discounts? How do you store and inventory large amounts of stuff?

There has got to be volumes written about these topics, right?

I'd like any information I can get for online businesses, ones with brick and mortar stores, and hybrids. Big or small, it doesn't matter, as I would likely join an already established business. I want to read online articles, listen to podcasts, read books, but most of all I'd love to hear firsthand from those of you with knowledge to share.

Anonymous because I'd like to keep my current job while I mull over this information.

How can someone sell gold and or jewelry for the best price? I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend.

She's down on her luck and is looking to sell some of her jewelry, especially gold jewelry. Of course, there are myriads of places that buy gold, including local jewelers and "cash for gold" places. But are they the best place to go? How do you know if you're getting a fair price? How does one research the going rate? Is it better to sell jewelry as jewelry, or as scrap?

Thank you for any advice.

How much is my 37" 720p LCD TV worth?

How much is my used Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U (37" 720p LCD TV) worth? How much would YOU pay for it? A co-worker may be interested in buying my old TV. Neither of us is sure what would be a fair price. Can't find any of this model on eBay to make a direct comparison; found 2 listed on Craigslist in other cities -- one for $400 and one for $600 (which I'm SURE is too much) -- but who knows how much they actually got. The details:

- Sharp Aquos LC-37G4U
- Bought Feb. 2005
- 37" LCD
- 720p (does not support 1080p)
- does NOT have built-in HD tuner
- Nice condition, fully functional, still have all accessories and whatnot, e.g., stand, remote, manual

Links: Sound & Vision - ExtremeTech - PC Mag - Amazon.com

Looks like a new 37" 720p LCD can be had on Amazon for not too much over $600 -- but since technology marches on, a new one would have a built-in HD tuner, better contrast ratio, probably more inputs, and might be better in other ways.

If it were yours, how much would you expect for it? If you were buying it, how much would you pay for it?

How to buy a car from a person

I am looking to buy a used car for cash from a local (CA) private party, not a dealer.
What do I need to know? I am mainly looking on Craigslist, but other suggestions are welcome. I'm looking for a Toyota Echo, if it matters.

So...what should I look out for in terms of scams? (I am already aware of things like shipping cars from far away, etc.) I will of course get it checked by a mechanic but what else should I be aware of?

How should I actually pay for it? Certified check? Giant wad of cash? Goats? I'm expecting it to be in the $5k range.

I am also going to be selling my old car, which is a 1997 Corolla in "fair" condition. Is it better to try to sell it myself, or should I go to Carmax? If I do sell it myself, how should I ask for payment?

Ummmm...

MarketingFilter: So. . . I made a tacky (yet delightfully unrefined) t-shirt. How do I best sell it online? [Long jump] A couple months back, I was looking to start up my own t-shirt company, along the lines of established companies UNDRCRWN and Pennant Race -- that is to say, a company with heavy sports influence with a sprinkling of pop culture and a dose of societal commentary. Maybe even a No Mas, but less for hipsters and yuppies and more for hip hop heads and anti-establishment people.

So I came up with a name -- ftw. clothing, with ftw being adapted from gaming-talk as for the win, but with the added connotation of f-ck the world. Our poster boy was going to be Rod "He Hate Me" Smart, a one-time kick returner for the Panthers (and other lesser stints).

My flagship shirt? In the spirit of old NBA playoff shirts featuring starting fives, I would have a simple black-on-white colorway and a starting five. But my starting five wasn't going to be a basketball team -- it was going to be related to crack. (Here's where the collective "eep!" comes in.)

Now, you might ask, but why? That's horribly tacky, maybe even not delightfully unrefined, and probably very offensive. And yes, I acknowledge that. It's kind of the point. I wanted a "statement" shirt, one that would make people think -- because really, for middle and upper America, and especially in my home of Hawai'i, crack is something that people think of in abstractions, and ghetto is a term applied to anything sketchy, when really, some of the worst ghettos are terrible things. I wanted a shirt that would put this reality in peoples' faces. In a way, it was like the infamous "Snowman" shirts popular earlier in the decade.

The shirts read:
Pyrex &
The Arm &
The Hammer &
The Spot &
The Raw

I printed them hoping that I'd be able to sell them (via consignment or whatever) in one of the newer less-established boutiques in Honolulu. I approached the one that I thought would give me the best chance, and the manager was totally cool with me -- but because of limited space, he couldn't run the shirt on the store's shelves. But if I showed him a season's lineup of designs, he'd be willing to put me in touch with his industry contacts and maybe I'd get something serious rolling.

After tinkering around and coming up with some designs (some were even pretty good) I realized that I didn't have enough to make a season's worth, probably because it was never my intention to make this my entire career. The manager understood, and encouraged me to give it some more thought and maybe talk to him in the future if I wanted to give it another run.

But now, I have 13 shirts left (I printed 15, thinking that I would get them on shelves, no problem) and I don't really know how to market them online.

They're not made with enough love for etsy, I can't get into supermarket, and I think that on other lesser sites, they'd sell... but probably over an extended period. eBay is a possible strategy, but I'm unsure about how to market them/title them and if they'll sell (and auction fees are preferably avoidable).

So... how do I move these shirts, preferably quickly, preferably digitally? (But any kind of movement is fine!)

(PS. For those of you who sometimes like to dig in OP's past records for dirt/help/what have you, yes, I acknowledged I set off a real sh!tstorm [that I'm just now reading, hey!] with my very first AskMeFi. The lesson, as always: sometimes I'm a real idiot. Sorry if you remember it, and doubly so for the ignorance.)

Thanks.

A car buyer wants to renege on his offer after he took the car. What are my options? As I was getting my non-functioning car towed, the tow truck driver offered to take the car off my hands. We verbally agreed on a price for the car, and he took the car that day. I knew his name, number, and employer, so we agreed to meet on a later date to exchange the title/cash.

I can't get a hold of him for a week, then finally contact him to find that he wants to renege on the deal and bring the car back to me because he decided he doesn't have enough money.

I just want the money and to be rid of the vehicle, do I have any rights that protect me from him returning the car?

Selling a large CD collection the right way

I want to sell my large CD collection. But what's the best way to do it without getting horribly screwed? So I've got ... around 1000 CD's I want to sell. They've been sitting in boxes for a few years, and they're just taking up space. Time for them to go. Years ago, I started buying the things I wanted to keep around on vinyl, and I'll keep the few rare/sentimental things, and that will be that.

But the problem I'm running up on is the best way to do it. I know full well going in that there is no chance in hell of getting near what I put in back. Unfortunately, the days of going to a used CD store and lugging in box after box so some college kid could pay you between 2 and 4 bucks per disc are over (that college kid used to be me, 10 years ago, when I worked in a used record store). Those places around here are all closed, or they only pay in store credit. Pawn shops are right out. Keeping them, in binder form or anywhere else, is right out.

I'd like to maximize return with medium effort put in. So what's the best way to do this? Catalog them all, put them on eBay as a lot or individually? Craigslist? Alternatively, would you know of a place in Houston/Dallas/Austin that purchases lots and won't insult you with a price (25 cents per CD is right out - I would have to pay for the drive over).

Hints? Experiences? Ideas? Suggestions?

Book values & ratings

Looking for a quick & dirty way of determining both the value & quality of a very large number of books (> 1,000). One thought:
Scan the barcodes/ ISBNs into a text file and use those to create a "bookstore" on Amazon to get access to price & star rating info.

I've created an aStore with an Amazon Associates account, but I haven't figured out how to specify particular titles or how to get product ratings displayed.

First problem would be solved with LibraryThing, but as far as I know they don't provide price information.

Warranty for Craigslist Item

I am selling a computer (macbook) on craigslist, and some of the potential buyers are asking about a warranty. What sort of warranty should I write? This is in Tokyo, and I've heard that asking for some kind of warranty/agreement about computers electronics is not uncommon in Japan. So if I told people that I wouldn't give a warranty, i.e. they would just come and inspect it for themselves, then I might not have many buyers left.

The machine is a 3 year old macbook, with a few upgrades. It's physical condition has been accurately described in the ad (few chips to the case), but I am worried that anyone could find something to complain about, since I can't describe everything. Battery life is poor, kind of erratic so I don't know how to put I figure on it (i.e. I can't guarantee 2 hours battery life or anything).

Any advice on how to write such a warranty is welcome.

Selling a dead battery car: Dealership or Craigslist?

Car with a dead battery (sorta). I want to sell it immediately. Will I be better off selling it to a used car dealer or on Craigslist? If the former, can anyone recommend a dealer in Seattle? So when I first moved to Seattle, I bought a used car ('95 Mitsubishi Mirage) for $1300. I just needed a jalopy to get me from point A to point B -- or so I thought. It turns out, I don't really need a car at all. So the car has just been sitting around, with me driving it around every couple of days to make sure the battery doesn't die.

As it happens, I kept procrastinating moving the car around and now the battery is dead. Even though I got it jumped (and had the battery checked by AAA), I don't drive the car nearly enough to hold the charge and it's just a hassle now.

Really, all I want now is to sell the car quickly and without hassle... but I don't want to get completely fleeced.

Will I be better off selling it to a dealer or putting it on Craigslist as a car with a dead battery? It seems like both options are equal, hassle-wise. Which do you think will get me more money? If the former, can you recommend a place in Seattle that buys used cars? .. and assuming the car is in slightly below average condition, what's a reasonable price to ask for / expect?

Help me just get this over with, please.

All bark so far, but afraid there will be an eventual bite... help!

[pit bull filter]: Help me sell my house. Caveat: Three large dogs next door are scaring away buyers, including one very aggressive pit bull. I believe the way these dogs are left to roam outside may also be potentially breaking the law. My house is for sale; it's offered at a decent price, kept immaculately, staged daily, and the yard is manicured.

Now, to the problem: I am getting two types of feedback from agents showing my home...

Feedback 1: Awesome house, did not like the neighborhood. Too transitional. (I have accepted that there is nothing I can do about this; location is always a huge factor.)

Feedback 2: Wife/person would not even get out of the car due to barking dogs next door OR love house, neighborhood ok, worried about potential buyer's pet/children and neighbor's dogs attacking said pet/children.

I have a privacy fence around my house except for the one side I share with a neighbor, who own a purebred pit bull, a boxer mix, and a bloodhound/pit mix of some kind. All are large and aggressive and bark regularly.

The dogs are behind a wide-set metal fence that's not even five feet tall you can see here. They run loose all day, every day, and I do not have a real relationship with the neighbors (they are renters). These neighbors are home seldom; I see them only late at night, almost never on weekends.

These dogs know me and will bark once or twice when I drive up, but when I get anywhere near the fence or a stranger pulls up, they go absolutely apeshit. The gate is automated and the dogs could easily run out as the owner is driving in.

My question is truly three-fold:

1. What can I do, on flyers, in emails and through my agent to assuage the fears of potential buyers? Example: Offer to find a contractor that will finish out the privacy fence and add this into the contract, or reduce the price by the amount it would cost to build the fence and include the contractor's information.

2. Is it even legal to have these dogs running loose, behind a minimal, gapped fence, when there are small children and dogs tethered nearby which they could easily attack? My neighbors across the street have three small girls who often cower while trying to retrieve toys and balls in the driveway where these dogs live.

3. What is the best course of action in concern to these dogs? I cannot tell the owners just to put them up when people are looking at my home; sometimes I get 10 minutes' notice about a showing, or the owners of the dogs will be at work and therefor unable to comply.

I feel as though there must be some kind of law in regard to having these dogs living outside, in the Texas heat, alone 70 percent of the time.

Homeowners, neighbors of pit bull owners, Realtors, etc: give me your best advice. I am asking because a friend who does animal rescue stated that there are specific laws regarding pit bulls and fence heights, etc. and I am unsure if I have some legal recourse in getting them properly fenced/put inside during the day/contacting the city about them, not only so I can sell my house, but for their own safety and the safety of the neighborhood.

Seeking a A System for Selling Videos A La Cart

I'm working on a new project that has some particular requirements for selling video online. * We need to sell online videos (of, say, 20 to 30 minutes in length). They’ll be viewable online, behind a some kind of password protection, or available for download as well (again, with password protection).
* Users will choose from a menu of videos, add them to a cart, pay for them and then get access (through streamed videos, downloads or both) only to those videos.
* Ideally this happens within our own site, or something we can tweak to look something like our own site.

No, it's not for pr0n.

I checked out some courseware systems, but they’re really about delivering structured multi-part classes. I’m also aware of E-Junkie. They’re a good option for downloadables, but don’t offer flash-based video for viewing only.

I’m happy to pay for a turn-key solution, assuming it doesn’t cost a ridiculous amount of money. That’s preferable, actually, to messing around with Drupal or whatever.

I found these two previous questions, but they weren't particularly fruitful. All suggestions welcome.

Aside from the obvious--that it's some kind of a scam--why do people call me up and offer to buy my used vehicle without knowing anything more about it than the scanty information and 3 photos I put on Craigslist? (These aren't obvious "Nigerian" scammers.) What is it with these people? I'm not selling junkers, so they can't be scrap metal dealers either.
Where to find Storage Auctions? Need help with resources to find where they are at, best practices...
How to punish a bad ebayer?

As a seller on ebay, do you have any ability to warn others off unreliable (but not criminal) buyers without incurring damaging feedback yourself? Or can a buyer casually mess up your auction and get away with it? I tried searching for previous ebay questions, and they were mostly about more serious scams, and the help sections on ebay itself were vague about certain matters.

Because I'm about to move house, I've been clearing out a few unwanted things on ebay. I haven't been so active before and my feedback level is quite low (11 positives so far). Because of this, I realise that I might get slightly reduced offers, but I'm not too bothered about this - I'm looking to get rid of things to people who want them rather than making a big profit.

One of my items was an old laptop, with a battery problem. I think I signalled the problem clearly enough in the listing (which is here).

It went for £39 last night, to a buyer with similarly low feedback (14). When I contacted him today about payment he replied with the following: "after reading it properly ive decided i dont want a laptop with faults now sorry ive brought 1 new from three im sure u will sell it as a second chance sorry".

OK, so specific questions that I can't get clear answers for from ebay's help:

1. Can you decipher what he even means by "ive brought 1 new from three"? It sounds to me like he's bid to win three auctions, then decided which one he wants.

2. I know you have to wait 7 days to file a non-paying dispute, but what happens when the buyer says on day one, "Hey, I'm not paying"?

3. If I were to do the non-paying thing, can he really leave me negative feedback which at this stage would mess up my selling?

4. If I cancel his bid, do I need him to also get round to agreeing to the cancellation so I don't pay ebay final valuation fees for it?

5. If I offer it as a second-chance option to other bidders, will I be giving up the option to put a strike against him?

6. And if I do that without going through the non-paying dispute, will ebay assume I'm selling two of these, and so take final valuation fees twice?

7. And are the people who I offer a second chance likely to be suspicious - given that it's a laptop and with this guy's low feedback (and mine) - that I've been doing some shill bidding?

It is not such a big deal and there's not much money involved, compared to other people who get scammed. But what should I do with this guy? It's really annoying!
