How can I salvage a bad sell on eBay?

My first sale on eBay was a new and unused mobile phone. Turns out that (unknown to me) it wasn’t new and has been used before. This is starting to turn into a bit of a disaster for an eBay virgin and threatens to tar me with a poor sellers rating. Can seasoned eBay’ers please give me some advice! [more inside]

Short Sell- Quick Sell

What should I know as a potential first time home buyer looking at buying a short sell property direct from a bank? My parents have happily lived in the same condo/apartment in Honolulu for over 15 years. Recently, a real estate "friend" of theirs said there is a unit in the same apartment which is going for very cheap because it is a short sell... key word is " real estate friend". My parents said it would be a great investment, but they have never been too good with research and finances and drawn in by storytelling of so called friends and sensational people. Are there any tips on what I should watch out for or anything I should know beforehand before plunging into this? [more inside]

Should I sell my books?

Should i sell my books or keep them? We're moving to a smaller house. I own way too many books. Most are expensive and i won't be able to afford to replace them in any near future. I have loads of slipped discs and lifting loads of small boxes of books will be agony. I own hundreds of v.specialist books i might need IF i get a job needing a particular language, or onto a masters in that area of psychology. They're big, they're expensive (normally - i picked up cheap ones along the way for possible future use). I live in a remote rural area with no nearby shop, so they have to sell on Amazon in the next 4 weeks or go to charity shops, probably get pulped. I would use most of them eventually. There are also my massive language dictionaries: there are online dictionaries, but often i can't afford the internet, but i don't know if i will need ever them or not, depends what job i get (have had jobs abroad). Really, it's a philosophy of life question: gather no moss, be a free spirit? Or plan ahead, be cautious? Which works best and why? Anyone with experience who can say you won't need those books/you'll really regret it? [more inside]

Sell Or Rent Out My Small House

I Can't Decide: I have 24 hours to decide whether to sell my a very small house in a very small town or to rent it out. I am 1200 miles away but had planned to return and have some fun with my friends then rent it out and come back down here. However, a realtor called and said there are people who would buy it with cash and no inspections (it would never pass conventional inspection) at nice profit. [more inside]

Can I get a tax deduction for selling my timeshare at a loss?

Years ago, I bought a timeshare. (I know, I know! What was I thinking?!) I'm ready to get rid of it, and I'm completely aware that there's no way I'll make back my purchase price. But can I take it as a loss on my US federal taxes and/or Oregon state taxes? Any tips on the proper way to go about it (what forms to use, etc.)? Many thanks in advance, hivemind!

Help me do what I need to do to wipe as much as possible from my PC before I sell it

Tomorrow I'll list my ACER Aspire 3680 for sale on eBay. I want to be as sure as I can that there the lucky buyer has as little chance as possible of seeing passwords/pics/personal info. Normally, I would just format and do a clean install of XP. But I've moved house and my install disk is one of 19 packing cases stored 2500km away, so that option is out. I've listed what I've already done after the jump, but I'm hoping a more tech-savvy mefite might spot a hole in my erasure efforts. [more inside]

Where do I sell gold ingots?

Where do I go to sell some 1 oz gold ingots. They're bullion (i believe that's the term) and definitely have no value beyond that of the gold itself. To maybe complicate matters slightly, I'm in Vancouver, in Canada. Bonus question: Would I expect to get something close to the price per ounce when I sell these? Or is it like the currency exchange rate, where you actually get a small but significant % less than the going rate.
