How can I moderate exhaustion from career-related emotional labour?

My career requires me to periodically muster up tremendous amounts of emotion, energy, and enthusiasm, and perform huge amounts of emotional labour. It's like a rollercoaster: really fun and exhilarating once it gets rolling, but then it ends and drops me into a pit of fatigue and inertia. I mostly enjoy the highs, but how can I get better at managing the drops? (Lots more inside) [more inside]

Can I buy a future for myself?

I'm middle aged, and I seem to be unemployable. But I have some money. Not enough to live off for the rest of my life, but surely enough to start a business. How do I invest €250 000 in a (low-risk) way that provides me with a job and a modest but steady income? I live in an affluent EU country. [more inside]

How do self-employed people manage sickness with their workload?

I've worked for myself (consultant; home office) for the last two years and I'm still trying to figure out how to deal with illness. If I don't work, I don't get paid, but if I don't take a break, I won't get better. I struggle to figure out what is "coddling myself" and what is restorative rest -- and how to ease back into the routine when I'm on the mend but not at 100%. If you're self-employed, what do you do when you're sick? [more inside]

Forging my own path - freelancing instead of a day job!

After starting a new office job, I've realised the large office work environment really isn't for me. I'm finding 9-5 work with a long commute at either end of the day stressful, unfulfilling and unsatisfying. I'd like to use the talents and skills I've developed over a varied career in media and IT to go freelance, and create a sustainable life for myself rather than hopping from job-to-job. Where can I go to make this happen for myself - particularly in my key skill areas of copywriting and IT work - and what should I know before and after taking the plunge? I'm in the UK. [more inside]

Finding others for video conference check-ins for self-employed

I'm a freelancer with plenty of ideas for what I should be doing to improve my business (and life in general), but I have a real hard time getting down to work without any kind of accountability or structure in my life. So here's what I'm thinking: Find 2 or 3 like-minded people and have brief daily check-ins via video conference to state our goals between now and our next session, and how we've done since our last session -- just keeping each other honest and on some kind of schedule. Where do I find people who would like to participate? [more inside]
