What are
these? The starlings that nest in our eaves drop them all over our deck. The one on the left is fresh - it fell on my head just before I took the photo - and the other is at least several days old. We are in San Francisco. Nothing in our backyard produces things with seeds/pits except our Meyer lemon tree. Any ideas?

What are these
mysterious seeds? They're 2-3 mm in diameter and about 2 mm high, spherical but slightly flattened (like a small tomato) with a brown hull and a round hilum. Important: the seeds were found in the gizzards of 23 day old broilers, so the hulls have been partly removed, some elements (like hairs) may be lost and colours may have been altered The broilers are from Western France, but the seeds could have contaminated an imported feed ingredient (such as Brazilian soybean meal or Ukrainian sunflower meal).

I have a question about patents in relationship to "improved" seeds and plant materials (my knowledge of IP law and plant breeding is pretty limited). I'm trying to understand more precisely the terms of ownership of these agreements. For example, I understand there are reach-through provisions that exclude materials from being used for purposes other than research. I also understand that many biotech firms are not interested in plant materials that contain technologies not already part of their IP portfolios. Please direct me to resources that will help me understand the terms of ownership -- how "property," in this case is information, is made explicit with these agreements.

I'm getting married in early September. Huzzah! My fiancé and I were originally planning on skipping favors, but we're now considering doing a combined favor/place card—seedlings, based heavily on
this. To keep the cost down, we'd like to grow the plants from seeds ourselves, but we're not sure what plants would be best for this kind of project, and we obviously need to limit the chances for failure here. Help us get it right.

I'm thinking about starting an indoor hydroponic garden soon, using a guide I found on
Instructables for DWC. What are some good vegetables/fruits to grow beyond tomatoes and herbs, which would ideally grow at similar temperatures and light levels as tomatoes and herbs? And what's the best place to buy seeds, either online or in the Princeton/New Brunswick, NJ area?

Help me identify this Asian grocery item. An old roommate of my current roommate left this item in the cupboard, and I have no way to get a hold of them to ask about it.
The package is yellow with all Asian language text of some sort. There is a picture of some beans and nuts. Inside are individual packets that seem to contain crushed seeds and/or nuts. What is this product, and what is it used for? i was just going to open it up and sprinkle on my oatmeal in the morning?
