Bogus Damage Charges from a Corporate Landlord DC Edition

Several roommates and I moved out of an apartment in DC this summer that is owned by a large corporate company (coughAvalonBaycough). We’d been in the apartment for almost four years. Before we moved out, staff from the building signed off on paperwork stating that there was no visible damage. A month later we get an incredibly bogus set of damage charges from the building for nearly $1,000. We already got our security deposit back, but they’re threatening to send us to collections over these new charges. [more inside]

Give me my money back

I moved out from a terrible landlord in North Carolina last June, and then because I was living in Chile with a postal strike/mail delays, the security deposit check had hit the 90 day void by the time it got to my bank. Now I'm back in the US and he won't give me my money back. [more inside]

Sleazy ex-landlord managing to elude any attempt to recoup security.

Two years ago I moved out of an apartment, with everything in good condition and good standing. My landlord ignored my requests for my security deposit, so I sued in small claims and won. Landlord has since ignored any attempt to recoup this debt, which is now - with damages and court fees - nearly $1,500. I've exhausted any resources I have to get this money back, and I'm hoping MeFites might have ideas or encouragement to help settle this in my favor. [more inside]

NJ tenant rights: how do I get my security deposit back?

After renting a room for almost 2 years, I broke the lease 1.5 months early (gave 1.5 months notice). I ensured that someone else was going to move into my room 1 week after I move out (so my landlord only has a 1 week gap in receiving rent checks). It's been almost 2 months and my landlord hasn't sent me my deposit, and is saying he will only give me 1/2 of it back. Details inside... [more inside]

Making Sure I Get the Security Deposit Back

Just moved into a new apartment. YAY! The apartment is in terrible shape. Boo. Our move-in condition form has the following clause, "I understand that the management company has also performed an inspection of the property, including digital photographs of all areas, and said report will prevail in any instances of conflicts." They will not show me their inspection report. How do I ensure that theirs doesn't say that everything is fine, and we get dinged for a whole ton of stuff that's already bad. Jurisdiction: Chicago. How do I transfer responsibility for monies owed on a terminated housing lease?

The property manager of the house my wife and I shared with two of our friends last year has decided to keep the entirety of our security deposit and has billed us for an additional 2000 dollars in repairs. The more bullheaded of our friends wants to fight it in a litigious manner and get as much of the deposit back as he can. We just want to be done with it and pay our share of the damages. Do we need to repaint to get our deposit back?

We're moving out of our San Francisco apartment after 6.5 years. We painted one wall orange. After mentioning to a few people that we were bummed that we wouldn't have time to repaint it and thus would get a ding to our security deposit, they all said that after a certain amount of time, we weren't responsible for repainting. What are the laws on this? Checked the San Francisco Tenants Union and Housing Rights Committee sites, but didn't see any info. Would one or the other be better to call, or can anyone point us to the information?

How to recover money from my landlord after they failed to live up to an oral agreement?

After months of pestering our landlord about cracked walls (from foundation shifts), we reached an oral agreement that as compensation, I would not be required to pay for the last two weeks of rent. After moving out, they sent me an itemized bill for those two weeks of rent, and deducted it from my security deposit (bringing our recovered deposit to essentially nil). What are my options? Recovering cost of cancelled security deposit

Can a landlord charge a tenant the cost of a cancelled security deposit check? My least ended 5/31. My landlord sent out the security deposit 6/29. I never received the deposit, and asked repeatedly that it be re-sent. She agreed to cancel the check and re-send 7/13. I gave her my address, and today a letter sent 7/15 arrived containing the deposit less the cost of cancelling the previous check. I was supposed to get the deposit within 30 days. Do I have any recourse here on recovering this?
