Device to tell whether someone's entered my apartment?

I live in a rent-controlled apartment in San Francisco, and have been enduring some landlord harassment of various types. (I'm paying a fortune, but rents are so high right now that even what I pay is well below market.) For my peace of mind, I'd like to install some sort of reasonably priced device to ensure that no one's entering my apartment when I'm not there. A huge bonus would be collecting evidence if it does happen. [more inside]

NJ tenant rights: how do I get my security deposit back?

After renting a room for almost 2 years, I broke the lease 1.5 months early (gave 1.5 months notice). I ensured that someone else was going to move into my room 1 week after I move out (so my landlord only has a 1 week gap in receiving rent checks). It's been almost 2 months and my landlord hasn't sent me my deposit, and is saying he will only give me 1/2 of it back. Details inside... [more inside]

Our former landlord is trying to rip us off for nearly $4,000 (Prince George Co, Maryland)

Our former landlord is trying to withhold our security deposit and charge us $3,000+ for damages we did not cause. We just received her letter itemizing the "charges" and I just want to make sure we are covering our bases, as it's my first time in this situation. We are in Prince George County, Maryland. I live in the state of pennsylvania in montgomery county.I rented apartment from craigslist on a verbal monthly lease with $650 security deposit. After 8 months I gave the landlord moving out notice of 30 days to find a new tenant. its been almost 11 months and she has not given me $300 of the initial security deposit back. I cleaned the house and she had no issues. Is there any way i can get the money back. I have tried to contact the person multiple times through email and phone but no reply.

Security Deposit Drama

Taking over the lease for one roommate in a four person household. I was originally told that I needed to pay first and last month's rent to move in: first month to the landlord and last month's to John, the roommate moving out. On moving day I was told that it was actually first and security. I would make the check for security out to John and then the landlord would give me back John's security deposit when I moved out. Confused and exhausted, I wrote a check. [more inside]
