Looking for the origins of a semi-common trope in fiction: under certain conditions (i.e., on a certain day of the year), a ray of light shines through a small opening or into a particular place and illuminates a secret. [more inside]

I've agreed to be the MOH at an old, cherished friend's destination second wedding this year (after the couple secretly eloped), but unfortunately, the bride and groom can't agree upon an actual wedding date and location. As of today, this wedding is potentially either 5 or 8 months away but still up in the air. Which is beginning to interfere with the ability of the guests to plan their lives this year... snowflakes below... [more inside]
I have been paired up with a co-worker to be a Secret Santa. Caveat, she is my boss. And she is pregnant. Everyone on my immediate team are public health nerds and/or general data geeks with a sense of humor, so any ideas for a quirky, funny, yet work and situation appropriate gifts are most welcome! Thank you in advance.
The Bavarian lodges. The Rothschilds. The Trilateral Commission. It's all so dated. Who are the new people behind the curtain running things? The gay mafia? Google? Some shadowy NSA subgroup? I'm trying to make a list.
At Deetjen's Inn in Big Sur, on the backside of one of the cabins, hangs this sign. Some sort of word game cipher thing. I tried rotational substitution in 1-step increments, but it's gibberish all the way. Any ideas?
I'm looking for a (Tolstoy?) quote about how couples develop a private language based on shared references and experiences, and how it's tragic when a couple breaks up because this language is lost. [more inside]

Asking for a friend: how would one write "Speed and secrecy" in Latin? It's for a group motto, and we wish to basically communicate "keep this fast/quick/speedy" and "keep things secret/safe." As briefly as possible.

Many years ago I had a fabulous lentil soup in a very nice Greek restaurant (in Greece) whose owners/chefs were Cretan, and which used many ingredients from Crete (which may or may not be pertinent to my question). This soup was very, very dark, like mahogany colored, rich but not thick, and fairly "oily" (which sounds bad, but it was heavenly), and it was soooo good. Now, all lentil soup is good, really. Mine is quite marvelous, but I've been remembering this soup for so long, and have never figured out how it acquired that color, or what ingredient(s) made it so different and special. Any ideas? Sorry for the gothic novel vibe this seems to give off, but it is what it is. There's some unpleasantness in my wife's family's past that I know still troubles her, and that she's never told me about. I know what this secret is, but she doesn't know that I know. Would telling her lift a burden from her, or just stir up trouble? [more inside]

Yesterday, while walking to the store with my mom, she absolutely blew my mind when she pointed out to me that the model year of almost every car is embedded somewhere in a semi-standard code in the plastic on the tail light, or headlight, assembly. This raises two questions... [more inside]
I have been running a Facebook group since 2012 and I got a grant to do research with the findings from it. I need to download the group's postings and responses into a table and thinking the most reliable way to do so is with SQL. However, I have only just started with SQL and although I have found some ideas on Github for doing it, have no idea how to get started with pulling the information. I am seeking advice and possible alternatives. Can you help?
I'd like to find some good subreddits that you wouldn't necessarily locate using a simple, type-in-a-likely-name search. Two pairs of examples: r/AskHistorians and r/twoxchromosomes (intuitive titles, but maybe you'd try r/history and r/feminism instead), and r/Wheredidthesodago and r/InternetIsBeautiful (impossible to imagine locating via a search).

Do you know any great quote about secrets and confessions? Something about bearing one's innermost thoughts and feelings to people? I would love it if the quote focused on a corporal approach to the confession metaphor, something like "giving one's heart away" or "bearing one's gut for all to see", ...
This envelope with a letter inside was found inside a large decaying bound edition of Shakespeare auf Deutsch in a junk shop in Bushwick that was only apparently open for a few months before disappearing. The letter, postmarked 15 March, 1939 - was sent to Paris by a Mr. Henri Wolf. The contents of the letter appear to be German shorthand. Included was small piece of what looks like code, there's nothing else on the back. The letter, envelope, postcard, etc in question are at this imgur album. Hivemind: What the hell is this?

Are there any real-life historical examples of the Small Town With A Terrible Secret horror trope? Towns where long-term, ongoing crimes (or unsavory religious practices one supposes) where purposefully covered up and kept hidden from the outside world and any attempt to investigate them resulted in the investigator being detained, thrown out, or killed?

I'm sure I once read a myth about someone telling a secret to a pool of water--and even this strategy backfiring. The moral of the story being, if you want to keep something secret, never utter a word, not even to the water or the wind. I've tried googling with no success. Can anyone flesh out this memory for me?

Once in a while, I'll meet a guy and shake his hand, but it's... different. They try to lace their little finger inside my little finger (or possibly little finger and ring finger inside my little finger and ring finger, not sure). I don't let them, and just give them a "normal" handshake, which they quickly adapt to -- but it's clear that they were going for the "special" handshake. This happened again earlier this week, in a business environment, and has happened on 5 or 6 other occasions in my adult life, usually in a semi-business environment. FWIW, every single time, it's been a white male doing the weird hand shake. So WTF is this? Freemason handshake? Shriner's handshake? KKK handshake? Gay handshake? AC-DC handshake? Cthulhu handshake? What??? (Next time, I'm just going to ask, but it would have been very awkward and unprofessional this last time.)
