Recycling dumpster always full. Seattle landlord blames tenants.

The recycling dumpster shared by about 30 people in an apartment complex fills up to the top and overflows the second or third day after it is emptied. It's been this way for a few months now, after some changes in the tenant count and removal of one dumpster. Landlord says people need to use the recycling dumpster space more efficiently, refusing to get more recycling space and passing on overflow pickup costs in building fees. How can I fix this problem? What's the weird smell along I-5 in Seattle?

For years I've noticed a weird smell when driving south on I-5 in Seattle, just south of the West Seattle Bridge. It's precisely the smell I've always associated with worn brake pads– since there are a number of small manufacturing businesses along that stretch, I've just assumed one of them was making something stinky. Well, now I live on Beacon Hill a few hundred yards from that spot, and we smell it ALL THE TIME. What is that smell, and could it be a health issue? Thanks!

Washing Machine repair: Can a mere mortal change a door gasket?

Do I dare try replacing the door gasket on my frontload washing machine? Photo of damaged gasket. It's not supposed to look like a ruffle. It's supposed to be smooth. The damaged occurred when I was washing a duvet cover and sheets. The load became very unbalanced and the machine leapt and jumped. Has anyone ordered the part and done a successful DIY repair? Or should I pay a service tech? The machine is a Maytag MHWE200XW00. It looks like we could get the gasket shipped for about $120.

Applying for rental house - need advice

Husband and I are seeking a rental home. We found a nice house and the landlord has invited us to apply. Last time we applied for rental the property manager had us do a credit/background check via an online service. This new landlord gave us a paper form asking for SSN, DOB, our checking and savings account numbers, employment history, and other info. The landlord is an older person with a couple investment properties. I'm sure this is not a scam, but I am reluctant to hand all my ID and bank numbers to a stranger. Advice? Anyone know a simple, reputable online background checking service that I can suggest to this landlord? We would pay the fee. My goal is to make the landlord comfortable so we can lease the house. The Seattle rental market is very tight. This landlord has his pick of many worthy applicants. We have excellent credit, references, etc.

What kind of lawyer do I need to look for?

We have a construction company in the middle of a year-long process of building two new houses next to ours. For the last couple months they have been dropping garbage (nails, insulation, chunks of 2x4) on our house's walkways and roof — some of it dangerous (boards with nails through them, for instance, along the walkway on the side of the house). I'd like to try to get this to stop. [more inside]

Seattle Themed Dessert Ideas?

One of my colleagues is moving away to take a job in Seattle and we're having a going-away party for him in a few weeks. I enjoy baking and I thought it would be pretty neat to have a Seattle-themed recipe for the party. I spent the first two and a half decades of my life in Seattle and used to work at the institution he's going to, actually, but I cannot for the life of me come up with a good idea for a Seattle-themed dessert to bring to the party. I see some things online that are either waaayyy too elaborate for my culinary-artistic skills (like cakes with very, very elaborate Space Needle and Mt. Rainier decorations on them) or that are just kind of ugly. What can an intermediate baker do? (It doesn't HAVE to be a dessert, but I feel like those allow for the most creativity.)

Moving Out Update: Making it work in Seattle & recovering from therapy

Hello Mefites, I am in the process of moving away from my abusive family (Previously: here and here). I've had a rough week, with my dad escalating his anger despite no provocation from me, which helped me make a lot of progress on moving out my things (discreetly) but I had a therapy session yesterday and I feel like my therapist has been screwing with my need to protect myself and get out. Even if you're not from Seattle, any help is appreciated! [more inside]

Who will deliver an ice cream cake to a Seattle residence this weekend?

My two-year-old is insistent that we should give his aunt (my sister) an ice cream cake for her birthday on Sunday. Does one of Seattle's many specialty ice cream shops deliver to the Atlantic/Pratt Park area near downtown? I almost found success with Gelatiamo, but they only deliver to businesses. Her birthday is Sunday, but delivery tomorrow or Saturday would be fine, too, of course.

Spring Break College Tour to Seattle/Portland area

We're going to be flying into Seattle and out of Portland the first week of April with Saturday arrival and departure. We'll be traveling in a van with two families comprised of 2 high school Juniors and an 8th grader. Both Juniors are interested in Architecture majors, though one is quite academic and the other may be looking at community college close to home for the first couple years. The goal is to combine college tours with sightseeing. A side trip to San Juan Islands for a couple days would be of interest if it's not too much to try to cram in. Suggestions for colleges/universities to explore, places to stay, things to do would be greatly appreciated!

iPhone data service w/o paying for the phone part? (Seattle)

My ideal situation would be basically an iPod Touch with unlimited 4G connectivity for $50-60/month. I'd love to figure out a way to still have all of the features I love with my iPhone, while simultaneously ditching the cost of making calls. Seriously. I have so many anytime minutes banked it's nuts. I'm grandfathered on unlimited data with AT&T (which means nothing really), except that I have a AT&T iPhone 4S to use once my contract is up next year. (Thought it might be pertinent for scenarios.) Not interested in carrying around a second device (e.g. mobile wifi). Thoughts?

Need help identifying an album I heard/saw.

This is a case of forgetting to write something down. I was in a record shop in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle, and the shopkeep was spinning a record that I enjoyed a made a mental note to look the band/album up when I got home. And now a night has passed and the details I remember are coming up with nada when googled. The details: 1. The band name was something that ended in "-ex", like Solex or Purex. I remember thinking it kinda sounded like it could be the name of a condom. 2. The clerk said it was released "last year" (he could have meant 2011 or 2012). 3. The album cover was a letterboxed (think Joy Division's "Closer") picture of a rose and a chain, the rest of the cover was red.

Central gas with new ducts or ductless heat pump.

Our home in Seattle contains a dozen or so electric heaters. We would like to get rid of these and upgrade to something more efficient/attractive/economical. It seems our two options are 1) Central gas heating or 2) ductless heat pump. To make gas heating work, we would have to install ducts. Does anyone have any experience with adding ducts to a ductless house? One possibility that has been suggested is to put the ducts on the outside of one side of the house. This would probably work in our case since all of the large rooms in our house share a common wall. What are your thoughts/experiences with installing either gas heating with new ducts or ductless heat pump heating? I'm assuming that central gas would work just fine in a Seattle winter but I'm not sure if a ductless heat pump system would be adequate in the winter ( considering that our hope is to replace - not just augment - the existing system ).
