For recent travellers, is the U.S. still a bargain? Specifically, how would you compare the price of eating out in a similarly semi-fancy restaurant in 1) San Francisco, 2) Seattle, 3) London, 4) Paris, 5) New York. Let's peg the baseline cost at about $50/person in San Francisco, excluding wine.

Please recommend good cooking classes in Seattle. I would like to give a friend a cooking class as a holiday gift. Said recipient is an omnivore (no dietary restrictions), has strong beginner (I wouldn't quite say intermediate) skills in cooking, loves both "American" and a wide variety of ethnic cuisines, and (just a random fact) is a fan of the Food Network.

I live in the Central District in Seattle and see crack being dealt on a daily basis. About 15 guys hang outside of a local gas station at a bus stop, at a major intersection at certain times of the day, and are criminally blatant about it (i.e. visibly exchanging drugs for money, counting money). How is this permitted to happen?

Are there any areas around Seattle worth checking out while I'm visiting Seattle. My trip is partially for vacation and partially to see if it is an area I might like to move to. Will it be worthwhile to check out neighboring areas like Kirkland and/or Redmond?
Which areas should I check out and what spots are worth visiting beyond the touristy areas in seattle? I'd love to hear some suggestions for fun and interesting things to experience in neighboring areas and seattle neighborhoods outside of downtown seattle.

Just moved to Seattle -- any recommendations for a good veterinarian or vet hospital? My cat will probably need some diagnostic work, so I'd prefer a facility that has specialists. I am hoping to find a place in North Seattle (Maple Leaf/Northgate area) but can drive anywhere.

My wife and I recently rented a house in the Phinney Ridge area of Seattle. When renting I saw that all of the outlets were 3 prong outlets and that there was a breaker box and not a fuse box, so I assumed it was all wired correctly. Now that we've moved in, I've found that 6 of the 10 outlets are coming up as "open ground" when using a grounding tester.

I will shortly be taking a couple of preteen boys to Seattle and Victoria, BC. The weather looks like rain, although probably not all day. Any suggestions on things to do, places to see etc., especially which might interest the boys. I have some familiarity with Seattle, but it has been a few years. I have never been to Victoria and could really use some ideas for there. Also, what kind of documentation do I need to take these days for the boys to enter Canada and more importantly, to get home.

ApartmentFunkFilter? I live in Seattle, in a 90+ year old apartment building. It's a great place except that, like most older buildings I've lived in, it's got kind of ... a funk. I don't really know how to describe it, other than the air smells kinda stale, especially when you first walk in. It's getting a little too cold to simply leave the windows open and box fans help to move the air around but don't really do that much to help with the staleness. Plus, the droning of box fans is kind of annoying. Also, we have two cats (and all that that implies...)
I'm curious if the
ionic air purifiers thingies, which seem way overpriced, actually work. Of if there's another (preferably cheaper) way to get cleaner air in my apartment. Is something like the
Hamilton Beach TrueAir what I want?

Occassionally found on the sidewalks of Seattle, and probably other cities, steel blue columns stand about three feet tall, bolted down to the concrete. About seven inches in diameter, they are topped with a cap one foot tall with a door in the side. A padlock keeps the door shut. What are
these things?
