I have been told to lead a nature walk & workshop for a Girl Scout event that has a "magic" theme. This will be in the Pacific Northwest in a coniferous-riparian setting, and these are 7-17 year old girls. Yeah, I know. that's a broad range of ages. That's why I need your help. I'm a botanist. EVERYTHING sciency and outside is magical to me, so I'm hoping to make a list of very quick (<5 minute) demos with things found outside that have a big impact or are somehow surprising to a non-science audience. I'd like to avoid the pointing-and-telling kind of nature activity - I want these concepts to show themselves off somehow. Apparently I'll be doing this multiple times throughout the year so seasonality doesn't matter. [more inside]
I'm taking my first trip to the Pacific Northwest! Most of the itineraries I've seen are for a 9-10 day trip, but we only have 8 days, counting departure day. Trying to make the most of our time without cramming in too much. What are your must-sees for 8 days? We are likely sticking to Oregon & Washington, and want to see a mix of cities and coastline. [more inside]
I want to take a two-week (or thereabouts) trip to the Pacific Northwest for an upcoming milestone birthday. On the itinerary so far are Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco. I've been to Seattle and San Francisco but never Vancouver or Portland. Help me plan! [more inside]
I'm looking into taking the train from Seattle to Portland next month. People who often travel between the two cities: how does it stack up to flying or driving? [more inside]
Am planning a solo trip early Sept to Portland then heading up to Washington and renting a car (Seattle?) possibly by Amtrak, with a stop at the Gorges). Have a place to stay in Portland 4-5 days. I am thinking I will need a 2-3 day car rental in Portland, and 4-5 day car rental in Washington. And I should be hitting Washington just before Labor Day weekend- which means I should book accommodations now! [more inside]
I'm a young, aspiring urban planner, and over the next month my friend and I will be driving from San Francisco to Portland and then to Seattle. What should I see in these cities that will be interesting from a planner's/social justice/sustainability perspective? [more inside]
This (very) recent question had a lot of good suggestions of things to do in Portland, but I'm in Portland and Seattle for several days each this weekend, and I'm looking for advice about what to do in both cities. Difficulty: like outdoorsy things, but don't have a car. [more inside]

One of the things I miss about living in the big city is access to a Penzeys spice store. The other thing I miss is having enough money to afford to shop there. I am looking for any good resources on where to buy spices, either online, or within a few hours of Seattle, which is now my nearest metropolis. "The spice must flow!" [more inside]
I'm looking for recommendations on where to do some back-country/wilderness camping in the Seattle/Portland area from around Aug. 31 through Sept. 3. Details inside. [more inside]

Road trip filter! We're spending today (and tonight) in Portland and want to be in Seattle by mid-afternoon tomorrow. On the way, we'd like to visit a volcanic (or geological) outdoorsy spot. The original idea was to hike the Ape Cave lava tube, but looking at a map, it may be too far out of the way if we want to leave Portland at 9am and reach Seattle by 4. Any good alternatives?
We just decided to drive from SF to Seattle via Portland for about a week. What are some fun family things to do? Places to eat? Places to stay? Snowflake details inside. [more inside]

Mixed bag of USA travel questions! Feed me for one night in Vegas. Tell me cool things to do and eat in Seattle and Portland (anything special on while I'm there?). Anything I should shop for because it is way cheaper than Australia (everything?!), not available in Australia and is a must have, or lets me take advantage of having US IP address (e.g. Kindle subscriptions)? T-mobile deal for my phone? [more inside]
We're going to be flying into Seattle and out of Portland the first week of April with Saturday arrival and departure. We'll be traveling in a van with two families comprised of 2 high school Juniors and an 8th grader. Both Juniors are interested in Architecture majors, though one is quite academic and the other may be looking at community college close to home for the first couple years. The goal is to combine college tours with sightseeing. A side trip to San Juan Islands for a couple days would be of interest if it's not too much to try to cram in. Suggestions for colleges/universities to explore, places to stay, things to do would be greatly appreciated!
Thinking of relocating to the Pacific NW but I've never been. Help me decide between Oregon and Washington.

Boyfriend and I have been in the midwest our whole lives and are looking to make a move to the Pacific Northwest at the end of October. Our lease is up and we will be out of work one way or another- so we might as well move then. Background info- we are both graduated artists in our early 20s, love music, nature, being outdoors and a part of our community. We are mainly looking for an active, younger, art-scene. We both want to continue to practice our art, and want a community to support that, and to keep us motivated. We are going out to visit both cities at the end of August (27th to 31st), and will make another trip later to find an apartment- and then move Oct 31st. [more inside]

My son moved to Portland over a year ago from the SF Bay Area and misses the radio choices we have here, especially for techno. I googled for info but am not sure how current the information I found is. Does anyone have suggestions for techno radio stations in the greater metro Portland/Seattle/Vancouver area? He drives a lot between Portland and Seattle for his work and would appreciate the call sign as well as the number.
