I've searched without success for a novel that I read and enjoyed sometime in the 90s or early 00s. As I recall, it was about a man who had to fake his own death (maybe he had accidentally killed someone?) and started a new life, working as a photographer. He caught something big on film (possibly a fire) and became an overnight sensation. The price for his works went through the roof but it brought him to the attention of someone from his old life and he had to disappear and start over again. He was trying to be a photographer, but since he no longer had any name recognition, no one was interested in his work. [more inside]
Four months ago I was laid off from a company where I had worked for almost 15 years. I received a severance equivalent to 30 weeks of pay. About half of that was paid to me in bi-weekly paychecks while I could still technically be called an employee of the company. The other half will be paid in a heavily taxed lump sum check in the next week or so. more inside... [more inside]

A few days ago I was searching for an email in my Gmail inbox and entered the email address of the person I knew it was from -- let's say email@example.com. I don't know what I did wrong during this very mundane occurrence, but ever since then "firstname.lastname@example.org" has been aggressively filling itself in on google-related search boxes in Chrome, preventing me from using Google effectively. How can I make it stop? [more inside]
Is there an app that will take a set of files in one folder (wildcarded) and find probably references to those files within the text of the files within the same, or another folder (recursively)? Although I could probably write this app fairly quickly, I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I can help it.

I want to find a full-page ad in the New York Times from a few days after hurricane Sandy that thanked a bunch of corporations. (Maybe it was the WSJ?) Is this sort of information available still? Do libraries archive the ads in a searchable form? I haven't been to an actual library in years -- so I'm not looking forward to sifting through microfilm, but maybe I have to? Is there a digital record of newspapers I'm missing out on?
I'm writing a book, and I just got the following task from my editor: get a sizable (50+) list of high profile people who have written blurbs or reviews for similar books, and get their mailing addresses. Here's the kicker: I'm not supposed to contact them directly, unless I already know them personally. So! What's the best way to do this? I hear there are search engines that charge a monthly fee for this kind of information, but I'm having a hard time finding out which ones are good and which are scams. I'm learning a language (Hungarian) and I look up new words in a bunch of websites (2 dictionaries, Google images inside of Google Translate, Forvo.com). Please help me find a website I used last week that shows you public Facebook events for your city, broken down by date, and - rather uniquely for such websites - lists the confirmed attendees by their self-selected Facebook gender! When you clicked on an event, it would pull up a map, and a list of the attendees, and then give you the option to click through to the Facebook event page. It was such a great resource and it's killing me to not be able to find it anymore!

This question is about as meta as I think I've ever come up with. There's a site that allows you to send a link to a google search, and the resulting page shows the search being typed into google and completed. Maybe I'm having an idiot moment, but I can't think of any way to search for the site without using the words "google" or "search" which obviously obfuscate the results I'm looking for. Anyone know the site I'm referring to?
