Back in the olden days I had a whole slew of search engines I would use to find stuff on the interwebs, some engines were better than others, some were slanted in areas, science, images, etc. These days I just use Google and it seems to do me pretty well. [more inside]
When I do a search in Google (in every browser on my Mountain Lion Mac), in the URL field there is the URL for the google search. Of course. If I click on "images," instead of a URL showing, I now just get the search response (ie, searching for "what the hell", instead of showing 'https://google.com/search+whateverblahblahblah' it just shows "what the hell" in the URL field. This is new since yesterday! Any ideas to reset it? Thanks.
It appears that when doing a Google search for my name ('Tim Pollard') the result Google features is a weird combination of my details (from Wikipedia) but with an embedded photo of an entirely different Tim Pollard (a motoring journalist). Does anyone know how to change that so my photo appears with my details please? As a performer I want to make sure people know who and what they're getting! Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!
What I'd like to do is crawl a list of 5000 to maybe 10,000 max URLs on a weekly basis, searching for a couple of specific terms. I don't see a way to set that up with Google Custom Search. I have access to server space and am comfortable enough with PHP or Python to configure a dB and script if needed. There are countless options out there. Anybody have specific experience to point me in the right direction?

So it looks like hyphens in domain names do mean lower positing in Google’s SERP but does this mean the same for keywords? For example, my site contains the word 'multi media' but I would like to change that to 'multimedia' on every occurance. Is this ok? Will it impact my SEO?
I am taking on a new role which will require me to be conversant in SEO. Our SEO product manager likes to obfuscate things so no one can pin him down. It is my job to pin him down and call bullshit. I have no idea what schema.org is or what this canonical stuff is all about. Can anyone recommend a great book / site where I can get up to speed on all things SEO? I don't have a lot of time to spend so brevity is key.
Hey guys. So I'm trying to determine how far I've flown over the past five years; I'd like to search my Gmail account for every flight confirmation, but the results are terrible--it seems like the search is bringing up all kinds of unrelated emails. Does anyone know of a better way to do this? Thanks!
I'm an author with a google problem. I have the same name as another author (completely different genre, though) and if you google that name, my books show up alongside hers in search results. This has been a recurring problem for years, to the point where I'm planning on tweaking my name for my next book, but for now I'd just like our books not to be conflated. (Google also combines images of me and this other woman, although I'm not as concerned about that). I've tried reporting this issue to google, but so far haven't had much luck penetrating the bubble. Any tech-savvy people have ideas on how I can distinguish my work? Thanks in advance...
A few days ago I was searching for an email in my Gmail inbox and entered the email address of the person I knew it was from -- let's say email@example.com. I don't know what I did wrong during this very mundane occurrence, but ever since then "firstname.lastname@example.org" has been aggressively filling itself in on google-related search boxes in Chrome, preventing me from using Google effectively. How can I make it stop? [more inside]
My profession now requires a bit more public profile and as such people are Googling me. Instead of finding what I want them to find (linked in profile, who I am 'professionally', etc) they instead are presented with a version of me from 10 years ago. What do I do? [more inside]
I've been doing research involving the treatment of musicians under repressive regimes. A while back I found a graph that had a list of countries, and for each country listed the number of musicians killed, tortured, abducted, assaulted etc. in a certain period of time. But I've lost this graph!! Can you help me relocate it? [more inside]
I wan to make a Google ngram showing the history of the term "spoiler" as it is used in popular culture to mean the reveal ahead of time of an important piece of plot information. Problem is, "spoiler" has at least two other meanings and I don't know how, or even if, I can craft a query to separate out those other meanings. [more inside]

I'm always impressed lurking around here by the expertise of folks when it comes to finding sources/answers. Obviously, there are a lot of librarians and information specialists whose jobs involve research, but still it's clear many of you are much better than me when it comes to using google. So, how can I better? What google search strategies do you use? What resources would you all recommend? [more inside]

How can I prevent video results from showing up in a Google search? For example, if I do a google search on "picasa os x 10.6.8 screen resolution", half the links on the first results page are youtube videos. If I want videos I can select "videos" instead of "web". But I can't figure out how to prevent videos from showing up in a regular web search. (I'm running Firefox on a MacBook Pro 10.6.8; I get the same results using Chrome.)

So, it would appear that Google have changed their search algorithms. Using search queries that would have previously returned hundreds of results I am getting a handful of results which are mostly irrelevant / gibberish. Any ideas how I can go back to the "old" Google? Thanks!

This question is about as meta as I think I've ever come up with. There's a site that allows you to send a link to a google search, and the resulting page shows the search being typed into google and completed. Maybe I'm having an idiot moment, but I can't think of any way to search for the site without using the words "google" or "search" which obviously obfuscate the results I'm looking for. Anyone know the site I'm referring to?
