Complex conditional text: compare values, spit out sentences

I have a project where I am tasked with presenting many data points, and need to have a comparative sentence or two before each section featuring the highlights of the data. "In this section, X is the highest value!" [more inside]

What should I bid to implement a fairly simple Python scheduling system?

Tomorrow morning I'm meeting with someone to talk about implementing a local scheduling/database application. Most everything I know about the project suggests it's something I could do in my sleep. Thing is, I desperately need the money, I don't know how much to "bid," and I have a long history of undervaluing my work. How much should I ask for? [more inside]

Using grep to extract x characters of text after a predictable pattern

I'm trying to work out how to use something like grep or sed or awk (or maybe even some Perl) to extract a string of characters which appears in a predictable place in a series of text files. Help/advice/tutorials very welcome! [more inside]

Best way to bring my programming to the next level?

So I've used Python here and there to solve system administration tasks and create some small web applications (again to solve any issue related to work). Living in the sys admin world, I typically turn to Bash. Bash because I know it well and I can throw out a solution quickly. Problem is I'm starting to interview more and more for "DevOps" positions, what's the best and fastest way to bring my Python (or insert language) abilities up a notch? I admit that I typically write in Python with one screen trained on the library docs. I've got a solid understanding of data and control structures. I thought maybe coming up with a weekend project might help but I'd like to hear other people's thoughts. Reading good code always helps, but doing is always better for me. I guess the real question is creating something that does x always makes you understand a language at a deeper level (if such thing exists).

Is there a free/cheap execution/debugging environment for Visual Basic?

I've been doing COM scripting for about two years, using a Sax-basic scripting application. It was a great app. It allowed line-by-line code execution, error reporting, and debug messages. I want to start using real VBS so I can port my widgets to a wider platform. I know I can write a script app in notepad and just run it with windows script host, but there's no real debugging there. Is there any free (or cheap) application that allows you to run VB script in a controlled way? I'd rather not plunk down a month's rent for Visual Studio if I can help it.

"And all the bells and whistles."

I'm looking for a way to let members of my forum create an individual "member page" for themselves, or have it created for them automatically upon being accepted into a certain usergroup, that they could fill out with miscellaneous info. To be more precise, the forum revolves an online game, and the member page would have details about their characters, background stories, etc. It doesn't really have to be tied to their forum account, although it would be a smooth way to handle it from the user standpoint. Except I'm clueless on how to make this work. [more inside]

Customizing a Wordpress function

Wordpress/PHP question. I'm working on a Wordpress theme and want to use an algorithm to alter some of the HTML it emits. I've got a general idea of how to do this, and could probably manage a brutish implementation on my own, but my PHP-fu is weak and there is probably a better way. [more inside]

Simple Windows Script to Copy a File in Background??

Anyone on MetaFilter any good at writing Windows Scripting Language (VBScript) scripts? I am a total nonprogrammer but need a simple task done, which is copying a file from one directory to another (on a Win XP) system either (a) every twenty minutes, or better still (b) after checking to see if the archive bit on the file has been reset, indicating that it has been changed since the last filecopy. This should run as a background script without any user intervention or evidence that it is happening, if possible. [more inside]

Microsoft Script Debugger

Microsoft Script Debugger - Has anyone actually gotten this thing to work properly? I've got some JavaScript (that I didn't write) that is completely bisbehaving in IE (although it produces no errors...it works fine in FireFox, so my usual line of attack doesn't work). I've used the View | Script Debugger | Break at Next Statement and then refreshed the page. It opens the debugger app but doesn't open any source files and it most certainly doesn't break. Has anyone seen this behavior and overcome it?

What scripting languages and/or CMSes are most important to learn in a library environment?

Library/information science question(s): My code-fearful friend succeeded in getting through library school without exposure to more than basic HTML. I now have him on a diet of Dreamweaver and XHTML, with a sprinkling of GoLive. He's wondering about next steps: for someone who wants to be well-equipped to work in an academic, medical, legal, or similar library or archive (with web development as part of his job, rather than the focus of it), what scripting language(s) and/or content-management systems are most important to learn? Is the library world fragmented in this regard, or is there a dominant technology? What would be a logical entry vector into this world for someone without a comp-sci bone in his body (in terms of languages/systems, and specific learning resources)?[no more inside]
