First they were writers, then they were writer/directors.

There are plenty of successful writer-directors out there, but I'm curious about successful directors who started out as writers only (screenplays, novels, plays etc) before they transitioned to directing. I'm especially interested in minority or female directors.

Books on screenwriting

I like books where accomplished creative people tell the secrets of their trade, how they think it's done best, or how they do it. Stephen Kings "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft", Jeff Vandermeers "Wonderbook: The Illustrated Guide to Creating Imaginative Fiction" and Ed Catmulls (Co-founder of Pixar) "Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration" are books I greatly enjoyed. Now I wanted to read something about the art of screenwriting and got "The Foundations of Screenwriting" by Syd Field. But although he seems to be considered a screenwriting guru, upon checking him out on IMDb he apparently didn't write a single movie script (he is listed as having written something for a short, an documentary and three episodes for a TV series)? Surface Pro 3 apps?

What are your favorite Windows 8 apps that the pen/tablet aspects of the Surface Pro 3 can take advantage of. Writing/Screenwriting-emphasis appreciated but not required. I recently gave up OS X an purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro 3. There's been a bit of a stiff learning curve and I'm finding few resources for guidance. Further, are there sites that are updated daily with news the way Android Police or Android Central are?

Ways To Help People in Need with Writing or Film Skills?

St. Louis friend trained as a writer and filmmaker wants to use his skills to help people in need/suffering. Does anyone in the area (the city, or St. Louis County) know of any volunteering options for him? He already has an office job, but career suggestions would be welcome, though I think volunteering is more of an immediate interest. National and local organizations anyone knows of in the area are welcome. Thanks!

Screenwriting and storyboarding for a complete newbie

I am interested in joining a local film screenwriting contest. I have not tried writing a screenplay before but I've read several dozens of scripts in the past so I have some ideas on how to go about the writing. What stumps me is this line in the guidelines: Contestants must supply four (4) hard copies of their scripts, director’s proposal for a full-length documentary, or storyboard, whichever may apply. It must also include a storyline. Uhm, what? [more inside]

Separating people from other people

Hey AskMetafilter - calling on all writers for help. I write screenplays, and I think my greatest weakness is that I have trouble developing clear, consistent characters in my work. I seem to constantly make characters do things that don't fit their personalities - which creates a lot of confusion for my readers. I need help figuring out how to create well-defined characters who are consistent throughout the text. [more inside]

Writing credits for small theater productions.

Are there some established practices for writing credits (cast and crew) on theater productions? In my case, I make weekly audioplays and have five to ten people helping me each week, with some people working in multiple roles. So I don't need to do too much here. But I'd like to present the project and the people that work on it professionally. And I'd like to be fair and consistent in how people are credited, avoiding angst and hurt feelings. [more inside]
