How to go from zero to TV?

We haven't had a proper TV in over a decade. I would like to have something other than my laptop to watch streaming media, DVDs, Netflix, etc. Can you explain how this works in 2013? I imagine we'd buy something like this Samsung LED HDTV and some kind of speakers. Then what? Do we plug it into a laptop? What exactly is Apple TV and how does it stack up against Roku? This seems like it should be a simple question, but I feel like a caveman emerging from the dark, and am fairly bewildered at all of the options and variations out there. [more inside]

Anti-glare film for Macbook Pro. Need Suggestions!

What is the best anti-glare (matte) film for my unibody MacBook Pro? I hate the glossy screen, but it was the only option available when I was given the laptop. For a while I had an anti-glare film on it, but it got dirty and seemed like it was making the screen too fuzzy, so it was removed. I'm considering the Green Onions AG2, the Moshi iVisor, the Power Support, or the RadTech Clear Cal. They all seem to get fairly mediocre reviews. Today I came across the 3M Privacy Filter, which apparently has a matte side, and better reviews, but the privacy filter would actually be a little annoying for my use. Suggestions? Other ideas? Screenshots in powerpoint don't render

When I take screenshots on my mac and paste them into a power point presentation I can see them, but anyone I send the ppt to gets no pictures, just a quicktime decompressor message. Images do render to a pdf. This never used to happen to me on my last powerbook. Are there settings that I can change? Thanks

Replacing a damaged Powerbook Screen yourself?

Just recently my friend dropped his beloved 17" Powerbook G4, while the end result was pretty bad, as in the screen was completely smashed, the rest of the unit is still in good condition. Luckily I have been able to find a replacement screen at a pretty good price, and I am looking to replace/attach it myself. The only trouble is I don't know how hard this will really be. Which is why I am seeking your experience and advice. [more inside]

bad screen! bad!

My mother has an Acer LCD (model AL1715) hooked up to her Mac Mini. The warranty expired 3 days ago, and last night it woke up after being asleep for about 45 minutes with a black line across it - the image divided in such a way that the image has rolled - that is, the bottom is at the top and the top at the bottom, split not quite equal halves. Disconnecting and reconnecting don't work, powering off and back on don't work, changing the display mode on the mac doesn't work, and we can't find a reset button. Acer doesn't answer tech support phone calls (endless holds) or emails. Any ideas?

What's the black stuff coming out of my 12" Powerbook?

MS Word Color

ColorFilter
When I create a background color is MS Word, and then print it out, the yellow on the screen takes on a green cast, and after a bit of fiddling, I can't seem to compensate for this effect. Is this inevitable, or, is this a function of working on a 5 year-old iMac, whose screen is losing it's phosphors? Any suggestions on how to efficiently match the screen color to the paper color? (I've adjusted the screen options in the OS already)
