My family will be spending 10 days road tripping through Scotland in May. There will be four adults (myself, my husband, and my retired parents), and one 18 month old toddler. What towns will work best as bases for exploring surrounding areas?

We are headed to the UK in late July and plan to go to Scotland for about 9 days in early August. I just realized that Edinburgh will be in the midst of its festival season in August and my partner is now thinking maybe it will be unbearably crowded and expensive, and we should avoid it on this trip. Is Edinburgh doable in August if you don't particularly like crowds? Are there ways to lessen the pain?

I'm planning a holiday in Scotland this August with a friend. We'd like to incorporate a few days (anything up to a week) of walking. Ideally, we'd like to go on a guided walk organised by a tour company - the kind where you stay in B&Bs/guest houses each night and the tour company organises transportation of your luggage during the day. The level of walking should be of the easy-to-moderate rather than super-challenging: the goal is to appreciate the beautiful Scottish landscape rather than undertake a strenuous physical challenge.
I've googled tour companies that offer this kind of thing, but I was wondering if any mefites have specific recommendations for UK-based tour companies offering this kind of holiday? Or any particular advice?

I am planning an April trip to Scotland and would like to take the West Highland train from Glasgow to Mallaig/Skye. Arriving in Skye, I would like to rent a car. Problem is, I would like to return to Edinburgh through Glencoe or Loch Lomond,
and enjoy the flexibility that comes along with having your own car, rather than take the bus. Can I rent a one way car between Skye and Edinburgh?

I'll be traveling in Scotland and England for a couple of weeks in February, mostly by bus. I'm an inveterate iPhone user, always tweeting, checking-in, posting photos and so on ... but I know that route will lead to financial madness. So what's best to do? I know I can jailbreak, unlock my iPhone, perhaps use another SIM card while traveling, but is the effort worth doing? Is it better to leave the iPhone at home in the US and grab a pay-go smartphone upon arrival in Edinburgh (and if so, how best)? Or do I bring the iPhone and use it via wifi only, hoping I don't slip and fall into a welcoming bit of 3G along the way?

I just spontaneously booked a five day trip to Glasgow, which leaves in about 9 hours. I have never been to the UK, don't know anything about Glasgow and don't know much about Scotland. Tips for a 27-year-old American/Bulgarian (but a Swedish resident) woman traveling alone?

Bonehead and I are going to Scotland in July, and will be starting in Edinburgh and culminating in a singing session in Cullerlie, near Aberdeen. On the way I'd like to see the Highlands, Skye or maybe Oban. My question is twofold: what awesome things can Scottish Mefites suggest to us to do between July 15th and 23rd, and 2) any appetite for a meetup?

So I am pondering a trip to Scotland. I know nothing at all other than that I think it is beautiful. If I were trying to find some place to go that possibly included the following desires (listed after the general questions)
A.) Are there any good websites to explore for booking purposes B.) Have you dealt with any companies that you really enjoyed...
Desire list: B&B style accommodations, in the country, the greener the scenery-the better, horses are good & preferred, water for swimming is cool- but not absolutely needed, booze must be easily found, good food huge plus
Any words or links of wisdom?

I'm hoping to spend a few days in Glasgow in September but I'm hitting a wall in finding a hotel because of the cost hike due to the single supplement which in some cases is more than the actual cost of the room. Any singletons out there been to the city and stayed in a reasonably priced hotel?

Going to Scotland and don't want to blow up my new iPod, so I'm looking for some firsthand knowledge here -- do UK cars have the same kind of AC cigarette lighters? Will I be able to power the 'Pod with my Belkin car adapter in my rental car? Or do I have to spring for the "world traveler" adapter kit to power the blasted thing while I'm across the pond?
