Leaving Academia, but Sticking it Out for the Degree

Assuming nothing goes catastrophically wrong (which might not be a good assumption to make, unfortunately), I should be getting a PhD in about 18 months. I'm about 90% sure that I don't want to stay in academia. What steps can I start taking now to have a smoother career change? [more inside]

Attending a scientific conference alone and overseas

I could really use some tips on networking and well, not panicking. Difficulty: I'm pretty strongly introverted and have some social anxiety as well, although I can fake it for a few hours if I have enough energy. I'm a senior PhD student who is expected to be better at this than I am. [more inside]

My PhD lab is still paying me post-graduation-Should my CV say postdoc?

I graduated with a biochem PhD a month or so ago. As is common practice at my institution - my thesis advisor offered me a few months of additional funding to finish up some papers while I hunt for industry jobs. Formally, I now have a post-doc appointment and salary, but I'm not actually taking on any new projects or doing any new science, nor do I have funding to stay her for more than another month or two. How should this look on my resume? I'm only applying to industry positions, not to academic positions or proper post-docs. [more inside]

How can I graduate and find a job when I'm struggling?

I am in my 7th year of a science Ph.D. at MIT and I need to graduate. I have invested an incredible amount of time and energy in this process, and I definitely have a Ph.D. level of skills and knowledge by now. 7 years is not outside the norm for my department. The problem is that a number of circumstances occurring in a row have lead to a bad/toxic relationship with my advisor and slow performance on my part. [more inside]

Just how common are abusive situations in academia? How do you survive and is it even worth it?

My girlfriend is 5 years in to a PhD program with an abusive (verbal, emotional, and mental) PI/lab. This seems to be a common theme in academia, just how common is it? How do you go about graduating if they seem to be working against you (assuming no fault on your part)? [more inside]

Scientist seeks scientific shrink

I'm a scientist and wish my therapist were too, because I'm having trouble getting across to him what the research community's norms are and how I'm failing to meet them. How can I make the best of this situation, given that switching therapists, and especially trying to find an [ex-]scientist therapist, would be nontrivial? Looking for more in-depth answers than 'print this out and take it to your next session,' if possible. [more inside]

Can I let myself be happy now or should I guard my heart?

Four days ago, my partner got an email from her #1 grad school choice that sounded good. How excited should we be? I know there are many variables at work here that neither you nor we can know at this time, but I want to know if I can be excited and happy or if I should try to calm myself down. I know many people here are phD's from the hard sciences as well and I am hoping you can provide some perspective. Here are the details: [more inside]

Where can a girl go to see some fetuses in jars?

Where can I go to see fetuses in jars? I really like seeing fetuses in jars. I find them fascinating. I have seen the ones at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and also some fantastic deformed fetuses at the anatomy lab at my university. I want to see more fetuses in jars! All kinds of fetuses! What are some other places where I can go to see fetuses in jars? I do a bit of traveling so even places outside of the US would great too. Thanks!
