I'm an American academic and I'll be on a partially paid one year sabbatical starting this July. I've applied for a funded program that would send my family and me overseas, but it's quite competitive, and I'm working on a back-up plan if I'm not accepted into this program. My preference is East Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa more generally, but I'm open to ideas. Where can I afford to rent a modest apartment or house and send our kids to an English-language school? I've been asked to help a family find the right school for their child - he's 7, not a fan of the whole 'structured work' thing*, and gets in trouble a lot at his current school. They're also (quite rightly) worried that he'll get quite "cool" in a few years if he ends up in the wrong place. He likes art and adores football. A boarding school would be pretty much ideal, as far I can tell, but doesn't seem to be an option. [more inside]
I know Waltham isn't regarded as highly as Newton, Lexington, Belmont, etc. This I know. What about the culture of the schools, especially the High School? Do they have a good.PTO? Is there much of an issue with drugs or violence? Are there any gifted or accelerated programs? [more inside]
There is no Constitutional guarantee of education. So is it mandated, organized and funded through each state? Some more generous than others? Their constitution? or legislature? How did this evolve? And how are basic, minimum standards guaranteed? Federal law? What a mess if every town could set their own standards. But isn't that actually happening with the 'creationist' movement?
I'm trying to decide whether or not to put my daughter into French immersion. I have two main questions: Can she catch up if I enroll her in grade 1 instead of in primary/kindergarten? And is it important enough that I should overcome all obstacles to do it? [more inside]
My family is considering a move to Nashville from Chicagoland next year. The idea of being able to afford living in the city center after having been trapped in the 'burbs sounds appealing. Listings at places like Zillow (via GreatSchools.org) and Trulia show ratings for assigned schools in these areas... and the ones for non-suburban schools are scary, like one to three out of ten kinda bad. How seriously should I take these ratings? I'm interested in both specific-to-Nashville comments and more general thoughts on school ratings. [more inside]
A move is in my future, but I need some help figuring out where to move, particularly in regards to figuring out school districts. What is the best way to do this research? [more inside]
School system is trying to demonstrate equality of education across schools to comply with a longstanding federal court order. One way they are trying to achieve this is by taking away programs that are only offered at one school. Looking for other examples where this type of decision has been made, and perhaps, overturned. I would like to find out which state schools (primary or secondary) parents prefer to avoid in Parramatta and the surrounding region. I have tried to google this and am not having much luck. When I find rankings, they are either limited to e.g. "The top 20 schools in the region!" or they don't seem to be searchable for such a wide region. For example I found one where you can list all school rankings for a postcode, but I've got about 30 postcodes I'm interested in, and I wonder if there's an easier way. I am also interested in subjective opinions as well as rankings. Any suggestions?
I am currently a public high school teacher teaching science and would very much like to transition into data and policy analytics, with a particular bent on computer programming and economic analysis. What are ways I can transition into these fields. One thing I have found that is a fellowship program from Education Pioneers. Are there other resources like this? What routes would you advise that I take? More information inside [more inside]

I am hoping to land my dream job in the heart of DC. The pay would be great for a single person, but as a working single mother, it won't be amazing. I am concerned about the usual: safety, quality of public schools, and commute times. Is Falls Church really that much better than Silver Spring? Is the red line as bad as I hear? [more inside]

What lessons can the UK learn from the US education system in order to close the achievement gap? I am writing a report on the pivotal role education plays in increasing the ability of low-income Americans to move up the income ladder. Central to the American ethos is the notion that it is possible to start out poor and become prosperous - it is hard work and not circumstances you were born into that offers real prospects for success. The class system in the UK is deeply entrenched and a mindset that higher education is for "posh" people. Why does the US have much more social mobility? Or is the reality not so encouraging? I am looking at inner-city schools in New York City in particular but any opinions about the US in general would be very appreciated.
I remember reading something, possible in the New York Times, arguing that while America's high-school students don't stack up very well against students of countries, our strength has always been in innovation rather than mastery of skills acquired by rote. Any idea where I saw this? [more inside]

Hi all, I am looking for resources for figuring out the best pre-schools and schools on the East Coast (public and private both are fair game). Is there a national database ranking the schools? I am particularly interested in the Boston/Cambridge area, but am curious for my own personal reasons about schools in NYC as well as Chicago, and maybe the East Coast in general. My kid is 7 months old and definitely not ready to go to school just yet. But as I am originally not from this country, I'd like to familiarize myself with the system fully before I have to enroll her in school. In my humble opinion, schooling is very important - if it wasn't for a good school, I won't have the necessary life skills myself (irrespective of the professional and grad training), so I am hoping to be aware of the US school landscape before my little one starts going to preschool. Many thanks for your kind help. Have a nice day!

SO. My friend is about to get her teaching certification from the NYC Teaching Fellows program. Very exciting! At the end of the program, she will be eligible to teach at a high school in NYC. HOWEVER, apparently due to some current hiring freeze, she's only able to apply to jobs at public (non-charter) high schools that have opened in the past three years. Is there some database online that lists...um... dates when particular nyc schools opened? Or, do any of YOU know of a public h.s. in your neighborhood that opened in the past couple years? We're at a loss as to how to search for these schools! Anywhere in nyc will do.

Dear Interlocutors from Ask MetaFilter, Please help me understand if the sequence of the steps I figure out to transfer my son Edoardo from a private school in New York State to the New York City public school system is correct. Unfortunately the staff of the High School Enrollment Office is very laconic. 1) I have Edoardo's current school complete the "Out of City Request Form" 2) I fax the HS Enrollment Office 2 documents as a proof we are residents in New York City 3) I enter my high school choices in priority order on my "Round 2 and New Schools Choice Form". My question is: where may I find this form? 4) I return the completed and signed "Round 2 and New Schools Choice Form" to my guidance counselor. Here my question is: who is my guidance counselor? Best, teebay [more inside]

What alternative routes to teacher certification can I take as a person who already has a Masters in Education?
I have a Masters and certification in Early Childhood. Now I'd like to work as a special educator. Seems the only way to get there is another Masters in Special Ed. I'd like to find a way to do this cheaply and quickly. I have looked into Teaching Fellows and similar programs, and all specifically require that applicants have no background in teaching. What can I do?
