Can anyone help find a cite for a study? I think I heard about it on the radio at some point. It was a study that recorded classrooms - I think high school - and then talked about how much classroom time was spent on girls' discussion and questions and how much on boys. It also surveyed student/teacher perceptions of the time spent, and had a follow-up component where teachers tried to even out the time. Thanks in advance!

I need recommendations on a PhD program in ecology/conservation biology/interdisciplinary studies. I am a biology student who has strong nontraditional interests in cross-disciplinary work, popularization of science (i.e. making science relevant to non-science people), creating social and political change, and examining the relationships between humans and the biosphere from a holistic, non-anthropocentric perspective. Any ideas?

Tablet or Digitizer that works responsively with MS OneNote v2007 or 2010? Heading to grad school in the fall. My memory recall is much better when taking notes by hand and besides I have some math classes that will cover expressions that don't lend themselves to typing on a keyboard. Years ago had a fujitsu convertible laptop provided by a past employer that worked great when in tablet mode for digitizing handwriting using the stylus but I'm not so keen on purchasing one now as I don't want to outlay that much cash. I could either go for a digitizer - something like the WaCom Bamboo (but NOT the WaCom bamboo as its got known issues with OneNote) or even a full tablet that can do inking and supports OneNote. It seems like the new rage of tablets that Apple ushered in don't do much with digital ink (its all touchy feely touch screens now) and are better suited for consuming content then creating it. Your experience and advice? Difficulty: Budget under $700

California Filter: I'm a recent graduate of a Master's level counseling program and cannot find work that will enable me to fulfill state requirements for licensure. I'm considering enrolling in an Associate's degree program in a closely related field with better job prospects. I'd be relying on federal financial aid to complete this degree, which is specifically an Associate's in Science. The problem is that the financial aid office claims that I cannot obtain federal student aid because I already hold a Bachelor's. Apparently, at this school there's a cap on federal aid - they don't offer it once students graduate with a BA or BS. I called Direct Loans to confirm this, and they said they'd never heard of this. The financial aid office suggested that I use private loans, but that's not an option for me. At all. So.... I'm turning to the hive mind. Any info is greatly appreciated!! Has anyone had this problem? Figured out any workarounds?

I have an bachelors degree is business but want to get my masters in education. I'm applying to Hunter College's School of Education in NYC. What are my chances if I do not meet the admissions requirements for an undergraduate major in liberal arts or science. This is a link to the admissions requirements page:
In general, what are the chances of getting into a graduate program? What do admissions look for when selecting prospective students? Are Hunter's graduate programs for education competitive to get into? Can I lower my chances of getting acceptance if I submit my application too close to the deadline?

Our school is being asked to remove the stage curtains to comply with fire codes, since we do not have documentation proving they are fire safe. Rather than buy new curtains (gulp), is there a way to send a piece of the fabric out for testing and to get back the necessary fire code certification? I'm in MA, if that matters. Thanks!

It's time to register for classes again. It is a pain trying to fill in all the time gaps in between classes, or to get them close enough together so I don't waste hours waiting for the next class to start. Is there a calculator out there where you could give them a list of possible classes in each subject so it could formulate the best schedule for me?

A colleague's girlfriend, who teaches in an 11-18 school, recently had one of her pupils stop doing work because of an (apparently) strongly-held belief that the world is coming to an end in 2012 with the finish of the Mayan calendar. I've seen a couple of anecdotal tweets about this occurring elsewhere too. I guess Rapture fever might be a more common occurrence in parts of the US, but this was in leafy west London. So, teachers of the green, is this a Thing?
