What should I build for my final project (in a technical Master's program)?

What should I do for my technology-related Master's final project? -How can I better brainstorm my own ideas? -Do you have a dream app you want me to implement? -Are there areas or problems that you feel are underserved by technology? I have a few ideas that I'm kinda excited about, but none that's pure gold. My program is pretty technical, but has close ties with econ, sociology, law, et others. Pretty loose requirements. Hive minds are of interest to me, so I thought this would be a cool place to hear people's suggestions. [more inside]

Library GroupMetaMindThing

I have a Masters in Library Science. I received it a year and a bit back. In that time, I have been applying for a job in the public library sector as a reference librarian. I am not getting anywhere though I am following professional protocol in regards to a sound cover letter and solid resume. I got a 3.6 GPA in the program which is decent but not perfect. Decent, though. I have recently been broadening my search to places outside of my home state of Indiana (and Indianapolis). If you have any recommendations for the best job site areas to review on a regular basis, I am interested. [more inside]

Music appreciation for home schoolers

I'm looking for resources for a home school music appreciation curriculum. I'd like to start at 'the beginning' (what is music, what are its origins) and work my way up to present day music. The age range is 7-9 years old. I would prefer not to buy a package, but if there is one that is particularly good, I'm not totally against the idea.

What do we call these informal school group meetings?

I'm posting this on behalf of a teacher friend of mine who wants your ideas: A university is developing an initiative in which pairs of professors, across disciplines, will meet up with small groups of first year students during their second semester to discuss themes of interest and promote intellectual engagement. These informal meetings will occur at least four times over a couple of months and can take place anywhere: in seminar rooms, in a dorm lounge, at a restaurant, at a professor's home, at an art gallery. So, what do we call these? [more inside]

How to handle $$ for a child at college

So I have my first son going off to college in a couple of weeks...his room and board and tuition are taken care of, but how do I handle making available spending money for him...his history of budgeting, etc. is not all that great. Suggestions on how to make available money to a child away from college for his needs, but without an open spigot? It's been suggested that I give him no money, simply lay out what I will reimburse for...good idea, bad idea, other ideas? Really clueless on how to make sure he has money available for emergencies or non-school "stuff", but not wanting to think he has a blank check. Clueless in Oregon... thank you!
