Music appreciation for home schoolers

I'm looking for resources for a home school music appreciation curriculum. I'd like to start at 'the beginning' (what is music, what are its origins) and work my way up to present day music. The age range is 7-9 years old. I would prefer not to buy a package, but if there is one that is particularly good, I'm not totally against the idea.

What do we call these informal school group meetings?

I'm posting this on behalf of a teacher friend of mine who wants your ideas: A university is developing an initiative in which pairs of professors, across disciplines, will meet up with small groups of first year students during their second semester to discuss themes of interest and promote intellectual engagement. These informal meetings will occur at least four times over a couple of months and can take place anywhere: in seminar rooms, in a dorm lounge, at a restaurant, at a professor's home, at an art gallery. So, what do we call these? [more inside]

Protecting/Encrypting Source Code

I have reason to be concerned that source code I am turning in for programming projects at school might be being burgled for the professor's own purposes. I would like to protect my code some way. I am thinking this is a great place for DRM to actually be useful. Anyone have experience with this? What are my options?

How to handle $$ for a child at college

So I have my first son going off to college in a couple of weeks...his room and board and tuition are taken care of, but how do I handle making available spending money for him...his history of budgeting, etc. is not all that great. Suggestions on how to make available money to a child away from college for his needs, but without an open spigot? It's been suggested that I give him no money, simply lay out what I will reimburse for...good idea, bad idea, other ideas? Really clueless on how to make sure he has money available for emergencies or non-school "stuff", but not wanting to think he has a blank check. Clueless in Oregon... thank you!

Middle School History Project

My 13 year old daughter asked for help in coming up with ideas for a paper she needs to write for her history class. She needs to write about any historical event or figure that can be used to illustrate both conflict and compromise. I am trying to come up with a topic that would be fun for her to research but not so common that 1/2 the class will be writing about the same thing. Any ideas?

What would be the best way for me to pay for my degree?

I've decided that I want to start getting my life together by working on earning a degree in computer science. To do that, I'm going to start attending the local community college full time this fall, in order to cover some basic classes, and then transfer to full university later when I'm a bit more transfer-worthy. Now I need help figuring out how to best manage my money so as not to accrue too much debt in the process. Ideally I'd like to get as much financial aid as possible to cover this, but there are a few issues. [more inside]

is it too late for a 30yr old to get a degree?

I want to get back to school and get a degree to find a better job but I am already 30. Is it too old to try for a degree? my interests are IT and finance, though IT is much more easier for me. Does anyone know the IT market in British Columbia? I don't want to be IT monkey forever and I would like to move up to some manger role in the future. Also, how do employers see hiring a mid 30s with a degree compared to all the mid 20s that are coming out of school these days? I am not sure how or what path I should take but I just know I need more education to get a better paying job.
