Do learning disabilities improve but still exist?

A child I know has struggling with output (verbal, written) for quite some time. He has some other issues, too. He has diagnosed LDs. He worked hard over the summer and has improved. The school seems to think that his writing isn't a concern. This conflicts with the opinions of other specialists. How do the parents make sense of it? [more inside]

Uncommon advice you would give your college-age self

As school starts up again, we're all reminded of the common advice: Actually go to class. Actually read the material if you're taking Lit. Join clubs. But what uncommon advice would you give your college-age self?

How do you use what you learned in school?

As a tutor of every age group from kindergarten to college, I often hear the sensible question, "When am I ever going to use this in real life?" I would like to be able to better answer this, and so I ask you, Metafilter, when do you ever use the things you learned in school? Do you use math? English? History? If so, what parts? And how? I am not bound to please thee with my answers...when it comes to career.

I graduated college last year with a degree in the science field. I have long had a passing interest in the healthcare field, and have had familial pressure to "become a doctor" even longer. It goes without saying that I decided to take an entry-level job related to healthcare. However, the more I see of healthcare, the less I like what I see, and the more I am reconsidering my future plans. The sources of the familial pressure, in turn, are getting more aggressive. Seeing inspirational and mind-blowing videos for kids

What can I show children to inspire and wow them? I teach children aged between 9 and 11. I'm looking for video clips (or other) to show the children that will blow their minds - or at least, prompt discussion, broaden their horizons and take them outside of the confines of the four walls of the classroom. What's more important? Parental presence or top schooling?

Okay, this may well be a false choice but I'm trying to sort this out in my mind -- I see two roads ahead of us, one in which we stay where we are currently living -- an underwater house in good shape in a middling-to-poor neighborhood (but with adjacent nicer amenities) -- which is affordable and where we are making enough money to save for all the things we need to save for (retirement, college, cash savings, etc.). OR, we can buy our way into a nicer neighborhood and school district, keeping this house as a rental. Right now my husband and I are both working at well-paying jobs and our 3-year-old is in full-time daycare. My goal, when she starts kindergarten in 3 years, is to work 3/4 or less time, so that I am home with her after school and do to this for the rest of her school years. [more inside]

STEM Education and Mentoring Ideas for High School Girls?

Through work I am co-leading an effort to do STEM outreach at a local high school. There are several different groups as part of the effort. One group is focusing on mentoring and another is running an app building contest, etc. I am working with the group whose job it is to encourage women and girls to get involved in STEM course tracks, specifically IT. College sophomore and switching majors

I am a second semester sophomore, pre-med student who has been reconsidering his options for the past few weeks. My grades in pre-med courses, no matter how hard I try, are extremely lackluster and my GPA in those courses barely hovers over a 3.0 (luckily, this is calculated after only four eligible courses). Furthermore, when I calculated my non pre-med courses I found that I had a 3.8, which was both encouraging (since I go to a top 10 school; I was a little happy that I had a GPA like this) and demoralizing because I've pretty much convinced myself that my academic strengths lie in anything BUT the natural sciences. Is the sky no longer the limit? Getting back on track in med school

I had a rough start to medical school academically. People keep telling me that if I "do well" here on out, it "shouldn't matter" in four years when I apply to the next stage in my training (residency). That's easy for them to say, but I need more perspective than that. I'm bothered that it could put a "ceiling" on what I might be able to achieve otherwise. Those who have experience with medical education and academics, please give me your thoughts! [more inside]

Wanted: state of the art educational/career counseling

I'm curious to know which businesses, organizations, people and projects are at the forefront of helping young people (12-25) to reach their educational and career goals. Am I too old (51) to go to grad school?

I have been thinking about getting my pHD—for a couple of reasons. Though I am a very well-established and published non-fiction author, I have been up for a few teaching positions lately and have been told that my lack of an advanced degree (I have a BA) is holding me back. In addition, I simply am interested in going deeper with my work; the degree I am considering is in geography, though history of science also intrigues me. The question: am I crazy to be thinking of this at my age? I don't want to get a degree strictly as a "broadening my knowledge" proposition—I want to be able to use it and to teach. But we're seriously talking being the oldest guy in the class, most likely. So, my questions: is it worthwhile? will it help me find employment teaching? does my existing experience count for anything? and where do I start? Thoughts, answers, advice...all appreciated. Thanks.

Technical Theater for Kids

I'm trying to find out if there are summer programs for kids (~13-15) who want to get involved in technical theater or backstage work in NYC. If anyone has specific programs or places to start looking, I'd appreciate it.

Do you think college is worth it?

I'm having second thoughts about going back to school, not only because i've seen a lot of people graduate and not be able to find a job so they can pay off their $30,000 loans but also because they might be over qualified for it or underqualified. If not that, then i'm kind of worried with the field i want to go into it would be really hard to find a job here(united states), and i'm starting to wonder if i would be better off buying text books/books and just teaching myself what i want to learn. What's your opinion on college? Do you feel like it's worth it anymore?

Deciding to transition away from the legal profession-- too soon?

I'm a law student in Ontario, just about done 2 years out of 3. I absolutely hate the academic aspect of it, and I'm pretty miserable. I didn't particularly enjoy the practice experiences I've had either, at 3 different legal-aid type clinics working as a student in family law, criminal law, and landlord/tenant matters. I have invested a lot of money into pursuing this law degree. Should I be giving serious thought to finding something else to do with my life as soon as I graduate, or should I stick it out and work my hardest to try to get a paying job in the legal profession, in the hopes that I will be able to pay off my student loan debt? Looking for Mythology Curriculum Given in Grade School in the Seventies

Trying to identify the mythology books I was given over the summer in grade school in the mid-seventies. They were definitely curricular, I think even had characters like Sam (a boy) and Nip (a dog), perhaps there was a girl named Jane but I may be confusing her with the other series we all know. I'm not a teacher, just want to re-visit them for nostalgia's sake. [more inside]
