How to deal with a family who disproves of the partner that you love?

I've seen questions like mine all over the internet. I've scoured the internet for endless hours in search of effective coping strategies, but every situation is unique. I'm hoping to find some valuable information for my own situation, which I fear may crumble if I do. [more inside]

Imagine a clever, slightly modified Pink Floyd quote in this space

My four year old daughter and I will be moving to Davis, California this summer. She will miss the September 1 birthday cut off to enroll in kindergarten and so I am looking into my options for school or day care for her. I will be attending UC Davis and will need around 40 hours of care for her per week so I can go to class, study, etc. I have a few questions about arranging care for her. [more inside]

Best driving school in Manhattan, NYC?

Looking for a good, reliable driving school in Manhattan. Have checked Yelp and come up with a couple of names, but there are some negative reviews of all of them, including criticisms such as the school taking your money and then not having enough instructor times available. This is for a 22-year-old first-time driver who does not have a car available and will need to hire the school for lessons plus driving him to test at the end.

Choosing the right fit for undergraduate ethnomusicology

I'm an older student transferring from community college to a four-year to study ethno/musicology. I've been admitted, and now it's time to make the final decision. Do I go for a pretty attractive program at a good school (UCSB), or for a potentially less attractive program at one of the top schools in the country (Berkeley)? [more inside]

Spanish language school for a duo of new travelers

A friend and I are hoping to find a Spanish language school where we can go for 1-3 weeks, late May-June, somewhere in Latin America. We've been considering going to Guatemala, but hear very mixed things about safety from various anecdotal sources. We're both relatively inexperienced female international travelers and don't really know how to assess what's actually safe for us. Questions: 1) Should we go to Guatemala for this ? 2) If not, where should we go? If so, where should we go? I know there have been questions on this, but it seems things may have changed in recent years. [more inside]

how to deal with deceptive students?

I administer an online learning platform for a university in Massachusetts. Whenever a semester ends, I always get several reports from students claiming to have completed work that the system has no record of. In a recent case, I checked everywhere I could and even contacted the vendor, but I didn't find a shred of evidence to support this student's version of events. Yet he still insists he completed the work and won't back off. What can I say to him, and other students like him, without seeming like an asshole who won't help?

My student lost her battle with bipolar. (triggers ahead)

I'm a high school teacher at a small, therapeutic high school for teens with emotional disabilities. Three days ago, one of my kids suddenly and with no warning committed suicide at her home. Staff found out just as the kids were coming in. We quickly prepared how we would tell the kids, and the next three days were a blur of tears, shock, some hysteria; it was all horrific. [more inside]

How to learn lists of information?

I started a university course after almost 20 years of not learning. US tax deduction for donating a third-party service?

We donated a service provided by a third party (i.e. "not us") to a deduction-qualified church. The service has a clearly established price of $150. We didn't pay for the service, because the right to the service was given to us in compensation for the provider botching another instance of the service. Can we claim a deduction on our US federal taxes for the normal price of the service? [more inside]

Did you go to a Montessori school?

There's lots written on ask about putting kids into Montessori, but I'm curious about the grown-ups who experienced it themselves. We are thinking to enroll our daughter in a Montessori program, but it's hard to evaluate what's best in general, let alone specifically. If you grew up in a Montessori school, would you say it was a positive experience? Did it feel like it prepared you for the world, or sheltered you from it, or neither of those? Just curious what kinds of adults Montessori kids grow up into, and what you attribute to that experience. [more inside]

What is a good academic introduction to transgender theory?

I'm updating a graduate survey course in critical theory that cavasses all the main 'isms' and is quite high level. It includes readings and discussions on feminist and queer philosophies and literary theories but there is currently no section on transgender at all. I'd like to change this. What's the best academic introduction to transgender or transgender theory/politics, the position of transgender within queer theory that you've read? It needs to be scholarly but memoir or personal reflection or journalism could also be okay as further readings. Suitable for Masters students so it can be philosophical/dense/complex. Happy to hear of any ideas for readings that fall outside these requirements if you think I'm going about this the wrong way too. It would need to be a book chapter or journal article not a whole book. Thanks!
