How do you plan (and write) academic philosophy essays?

I've never been very good at outlining or planning academic papers. My method of attack has consisted of sitting down at my laptop and hammering out prose, then going back and editing draft after draft until I come up with something I like. This method served me just fine in most of my humanities and social science courses in college, but I have a much harder time approaching philosophy essays in this unstructured way. Does anyone have any particular tips or methods that have helped them plan and write academic philosophy essays?

Teachers, help me out.

Teachers who have taught at schools in poor areas and in well to do areas, can you please tell me what difference parent involvement at the school makes. Not talking about what happens at home between parent and child, but rather trying to gauge the impact parents who volunteer at the school have. [more inside]

Oh, you're an Archivist? Hi! I'm the president of your fan club.

The only catch is, I'm still learning a lot and I don't know how to describe what I want my focus to be in my statement of purpose application essay. help! should I drop out of my MFA writing program?

I started a MFA writing program in Vancouver this fall. I wasn't sure about whether I should go or not to begin with, and now, I'm still second-guess and worrying I made a big mistake. I'm unhappy, often, and I'm worried that if I stay it will be for the wrong reasons: a big, heavy sunken cost fallacy. Can you help, please? Long complicated backstory inside. [more inside]

Eastern MA middle schools and high schools that offer classes digitally?

I'm looking for regular middle schools or high schools in eastern Massachusetts (i.e., the kinds with bricks-and-mortar buildings and classrooms with teachers and students there in person) but that also offer some courses completely digitally. E.g., students might go online to take an AP class or a foreign language not otherwise offered by the school. They might do so from home or from a computer lab at school or similar. [more inside]

How to handle my anxiety on "active shooter" drills at school?

So, my daughter's daycare/pre-school is doing a "safety awareness" week. Yesterday was fire safety, there was a firetruck there, the kids practiced what to do in an emergency. Today it's earthquake safety. Tomorrow, it's "Silent Evacuation / Active Shooter." This is causing me some intense anxiety. I haven't done a whole lot to prepare my four-year-old for the fact that if someone in her community has access to firearms and they feel upset that they might try to murder all the teachers and students. Dealing w/ being an Average Jane engaged to a brilliant genius?

So I screwed up undergrad, pretty much eliminating the possibility of an academic career for myself, and got engaged to a guy who is in the most academic of careers. I'm envious and embarrassed about my lack of career path compared to his glittering academic future, and my current job is really not long-term sustainable. Hopeless, miserable, and alternating between feeling bitterly envious and then tortured by guilt for being such an unfair jerk, I'm being a bad partner, and I really don't know how to navigate all this. Community Building for High School Students

I'm a high school teacher, and I was looking for ideas for building community and comfort in the classroom. I know one of my coworkers likes to play a game called "confessions" for extra credit. He pulls out a confession from a bag--where various students have revealed a little known fact about themselves--and the first person to guess the confession is awarded extra credit. Does anyone have ideas like this to build community in the classroom? I teach 10th graders in a suburban school district.
