Slicing and dicing photocopies of open faced books

I'm always copying chapters from books at work. I usually scan them straight to a pdf file by opening the book face down and copying two pages at once. This makes the final product difficult to read on various screens. [more inside]

Activism/scholarship work for American abroad? Theme: history/politics

My dear friend is seeking a job abroad (at least 1 yr) and looking for solutions beyond the typical teach English/WOOFing/what have you. 26 y.o. and has completed 1.5 years of college (but no degree) & several years of activist experience (Occupy + radical queer politics by way of the conservative South). Kind of uncannily brilliant to the point where he's been asked to teach grad-level classes. Looking for something stimulating and interesting and stuck in that spot of not-enough-experience but so-so-much-brights. [more inside]

How best to promote raising scholarship funds?

My friends and I have created a memorial scholarship for a friend who passed away over 10 years ago. Through friends and family we're confident to get to our minimum endowment amount, but we'd want to promote this through Facebook and other means (i.e. events) in order to have an increased potential endowment. Do you have any suggestions/tips, on helping increase the visibility? Most of us don't live in our hometown (where the scholarship will be awarded) but several live within a couple hours drive. We have some ideas but want to hear experience and ideas. Thanks!

How to decide between 2 Grad Programs: Chicago vs Boston

Hey All, I would love some advice. I am not sure what to do. So I am going to grad school in health policy. Option A is to attend a University in Boston. I have applied and been accepted. Now Boston is twice as expensive as the local university in Chicago. However, I plan to apply for a scholarship to attend Boston. I will not find out if I am awarded this scholarship until the summer. If I am a recipient of the scholarship it comes with a 50% tuition waiver. One of the benefits of the scholarship is that there is a leadership development component and you are assigned a mentor, who is a leader in the field, in the Boston area. To apply for the scholarship, I have to commit and accept the offer to attend the school. However, if I do not get the scholarship, I would financially not be able to attend the school. So you might be able to see where this is going. On the one hand, I would like to start looking for housing and a roommate in Boston (I understand cost of living is much higher than Chicago, so I am a little freaked about that) right now, but how can I do this if I do not know if I will be attending the program? If you're an academic and/or grad student and you've printed out reams and reams of PDFs b/c they're easier to read that way... is it worth keeping them all, just for reference, even if they don't seem immediately applicable to your current projects? Or is an electronic copy enough and can the unwieldy stacks of paper go off to recycling without regret?

Interacting with university presses at a huge conference to our mutual benefit

I'm an author, and I have a great job helping my fellow faculty members publish their books with university presses. Through this job I visit presses one-on-one sometimes, but that is expensive and involves major travel. A huge conference is coming up with 20 of our target presses in attendance, each at a booth. What is the best way to contact them pre-conference to arrange intelligent, mutually meaningful interaction? Should I write to the directors themselves, or is there a more grassroots way to poll university press staffs to get a feel for who wants to meet and discuss their take on scholarly publishing? And what's in this for them, other than the fact that my university is reasonably high on the prestige scale? Any other benefit to them?
