Where do I buy weird scents like cut grass or burning rubber?

I want to make weird perfumes for fun. Like those Comme des Garçons colognes that smell like a gas station, or a dive bar, or whatever. Where would I find those types of scents (mown grass, burnt rubber, urine, rotten eggs, cigarette smoke etc)? Unsurprisingly, the essential oil suppliers don't stock them. [more inside]

From "clean" to "great"

Can you recommend a specific shampoo or conditioner that will make my hair smell great? (fwiw, I am a woman in my mid-20s, and I neither work nor live with people who are sensitive to fragrances.)

Can a cologne possibly smell different when applied in another state?

Just before a trip to Seattle, my girlfriend went online and bought me a new bottle of the cologne I use. When I sprayed it on in Seattle, it smelled really different than it normally does and didn't seem to last long at all. But now that we're back in Denver, it smells fine, just like it always has. It it possible the elevation or some other factor made that much of a difference in how the stuff smells? [more inside]

What does Point Reyes smell like?

There's a particular scent I associate with the coastal SF Bay Area, in particular the Point Reyes area, though I've smelled it as far south as Big Sur. Because of that, I associate it with redwoods, but I'm pretty sure it's not just the redwoods I'm smelling. It's a little floral but also slightly sharp and astringent--oddly, as lovely as it smells, it reminds me a bit of the Clairol hair dye I used as a teenager. What is it?

Help me manage my growing sensitivity to fragrance

I've gotten increasingly sensitive to fragrance over the past couple of years, and it's starting to cause me real problems. Whenever I smell Febreze or anything with a very strong fragrance, my throat closes up, I can "taste" the smell, I sneeze and my nose runs, my eyes water, and I get a migraine that can incapacitate me for hours. I need to be able to function while travelling for my work: please help me figure out how to handle this. [more inside]

Fire bad, smelly things good.

I have been wanting to get some nice scented things, but my lease stipulates no burning candles in my apartment, so I'd like some other delivery mechanism. But there's a loooot of things out there and I'm not sure what to choose. Criteria: Nice and not fake-smelling stuff, wide variety of available fragrances, reasonably priced, involves no matches/flames/smoke. Kind of prefer something I can use only for short periods of time as opposed to just leaving it going so long I can't smell it anymore.

Looking for a new cologne

Help me understand fragrance: Hermes edition.

What do you use to clean floors? How about grease spots in laundry?

We've been using Pine-sol cleaner for years. The pine oil in it dissolved grease and killed germs. Unfortunately, the old formula has been replaced by a new "original formula" that is advertised as having a longer-lasting scent. It stinks! It smells like very bad cheap imitation floral perfume now, a long-lasting scent that makes the house smell horrible. We can't have this scent in our house. What should we use instead? [more inside]

Help ID this (natural) mystery floral scent?

Every now and then this incredibly gorgeous floral fragrance wafts into our house, and I always thought it was a neighbor spraying on scent at a time when the breeze currents are just right for it to drift our way, but when I mentioned that I wished I knew what brand of perfume it is, my husband said that, no, it is actually a flower (or flowering vine), because he's seen and smelled it before, but he doesn't know what sort of plant it is, or remember what it looks like. I'd love some suggestions about what it might be. I'm sure it's not Jasmine, unless it's some specific type I'm not familiar with. We're in Greece. [more inside]

How to generate "grilling smells?"

So we're opening up a concession stand a local soccer field tomorrow, and we're going to have a grill at which we're going to serve typical grill stuff (burgers, dogs, maybe a few fancier things here and there). What can we throw on the grill (like in a saucepan on a side burner) that can blanket the fields with the smell of home-cooked burgers and generate some serious mouth-watering? The grill's fairly small -- a fairly typical four-burner suburban soccer dad fixture, and the stand will be open for about 2-2.5 hours each night. [more inside]
