Help me save money for a self pay surgery.

I need a surgery, which is elective but that my physicians are recommending for me. This surgery will increase my quality of life. My employer based insurance (BCBS HSA Plan) excludes this type of surgery. Not a loop hole in this plan at all. My employer does not offer any plans that cover this surgery. What are your tips/tricks/advice for saving a large sum of cash? [more inside]

Solar Power for an Apartment Dweller?

Could anyone suggest a resource (a person or a website) or give me a clue about where to get advice about installing a solar cell or two? This is in Nashville, TN; local resources would be awesome! But 'net based stuff works, too. Google searches and YouTube videos have me confuddled about what might work/how to install something for my apartment - most of the information is for homeowners; the 'portable' solar power systems are aimed at preppers/folks who are concerned about power outages. Creative, punchy, analog way to track our spending and saving?

We need to save $2000 every month for the next 6 months. That's not easy. I want to be able to say: okay, here's how much we've saved so far this month, here are our known expenses, can we afford a coffee out today, yes or no? But we don't have a good way to track our day-to-day, week-to-week progress so that we can adjust our spending as needed. Special difficulty: I don't think an app is going to work. I wish I could rig up a flashing neon sign or something over the front door... [more inside]

Good thrifting blogs?

You'd think it would be easy to find good thrifting blogs... but so far it hasn't been. Here's what I'm looking for: blogs by people who go to Goodwill and similar thrift stores and buy things for their home/garden and either use them as-is or fix them up somehow. I'm not interested in blogs that focus on clothing/fashion, or blogs that are only about crafting with thrift-store stuff, or blogs that are only about buying and then reselling on ebay or whatever.

Budget Dating Without Being Cheap

I am currently off work until my mental health improves and will shortly have one of my welfare payments suspended (I made some some from selling my half of a jointly owned house, but I'll need all of it to get a small apartment) so I will not have the money I used to for going to cinema or pub or restaurant. My girlfriend/ partner will be similarly impoverished but we don't just want to stay in and watch TV every night. So I was wondering if the group mind here could come up with suggestions for activities that don't cost a lot of money. I would like to be able to treat my partner to nice things but I won't be able to do that much, so I wondered what people here thought would be cheap things to do without seeming cheap, if that makes sense.
